Historia
Owen Foster has never wanted for anything. Then his mother shows up at his elite New Orleans boarding school cradling a bombshell: his privileged life has been funded by stolen money. After using the family business, the single largest employer in his small Louisiana town, to embezzle millions and drain the employees' retirement accounts, Owen's father vanished without a trace, leaving Owen and his mother to deal with the fallout. Owen returns to Lake Cane to finish his senior year, where people he hardly remembers despise him for his father's crimes.

one of the worst audio books I've ever listened to.
Revisado: 07-13-24
this story could have been told in 3 minutes. the narration is the absolute worst I think I've ever heard on Audible. some kind of sing song voice that ends with an up swing lilt. it is so annoying. the story is dull and filled with fluff that doesn't even need to be there. why did I bother listening to the whole thing? I have no idea I should have returned it after the first 3 minutes. don't waste your money or your time.

Unbelievably boring...
Revisado: 07-23-19
Terribly written and such a boring story with characters that don't seem to be believable and I couldn't care less about. One of the slowest, nothing ever happens story I've listened to in along time. The protagonist goes to talk to various people. The author describes the person with whom he has a conversation and the environment. Then he leaves and goes to the next person of interest. I kept hoping something would unfold, but NO!!!! Hours of this tedium. Why did I continue to listen? This one's going back to the digital bin and I hope they burn it. Don't waste a credit on this.... I implore you. The only saving grace is Joe Barrett narrating.

Revisado: 04-02-19
I've listened to all four Sean Drummond novels and every one of them was wonderful. Joe Barrett does a fantastic job and I can't picture any other narrator voicing Sean Drummond. But unfortunately the next three books are narrated by different narrators and I just can't listen to them. The characters are just not the same.

Horrible narrator, sophomoric writing...
Revisado: 09-13-17
Terrible writing. Here is a sample: "The Pope's cassock glowed as white as an acetylene torch". No the Pope wasn't even set on fire.
The narration made me cringe. Jewish accents, German accents, Italian accents all sound the same. So stereotypical as if the characters were being portrayed in a comedy sketch.
The story was ridiculous granted the subject matter was poignant.
Anyway, I can't believe I listened to this entire book. I kept thinking it has to get better but it didn't. I just can't say enough bad things about this book. It's getting returned even though I listened to the entire thing.

Ugh... goes nowhere... terribly boring
Revisado: 08-10-16
I listened to The Last Painting of Sarah Devos by this author and absolutely loved it. The writing and story were gripping. I found myself rewinding just to hear certain passages or sentences over again. The narrator is wonderful. So I thought The Beautiful Miscellaneous would be a good choice. Wrong... Did the same author write this book? This book was terribly dull, the narration uninspiring and the story endless. I kept thinking this will go somewhere but, no. Very disappointing. Although I listened to the entire book, I'm going to return it.

Terrible in every way
Revisado: 03-11-16
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Absolutely childish and predictable dialogue. No character development. Why has anyone given these stories any rave reviews? Has no one ever read well-written detective novels that don't seem like they were put together in a couple days? Martin Cruz Smith, James Lee Burke to name a couple.
I should have listened to my first impression and returned this to Audible after the first 30 minutes. For some reason I kept listening and cringing at how awful this book was. I suppose because it was Michael Connelly, well known author and the reviews "Connelly is back..." He should have stayed away.

Hard to believe but it lived up to the trilogy
Revisado: 10-01-15
Any additional comments?
I was skeptical and so surprised that this book could in any way live up to the fabulous trilogy by Steig Larson. But it did. The characters were so close to Larson's. The story was riveting. The narration was excellent as usual. Simon Vance is a master.
I know that many who have enjoyed the trilogy think it horrible that another author would take such liberties as to attempt to continue the saga, but I'm glad he did. I really do think he all but nailed the writing style, the character dialogue, the compelling intellectual story line (for the most part). I was so pleasantly surprised. Sure there were a few hokey twists that I think would have been better left out, but still, all in all, the book was one of my favs.
I only wish Larson's partner would allow his last incomplete novel (400 pages or so) to be completed by this author. I'll bet he could do it justice.
5 stars all around!!!!

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Nothing
Would you ever listen to anything by Jussi Adler-Olsen again?
I doubt it
Would you be willing to try another one of Erik Davies’s performances?
Absolutely not
What character would you cut from The Keeper of Lost Causes?
Page one through the end of the book
Any additional comments?
Oh where to begin? Why can't I rate it zero or negative 5 stars? I am a huge fan of Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole detective collection and Steig Larson's Dragon Tattoo series so when listeners likened this book and the subsequent novels of this author to those, I was intrigued. Were they ever wrong! This book is horrible in so many aspects. First of all the writing is simply childish, dull and intensely predictable. I found myself completing one cliche after another before it was even uttered. The protagonist, Carl Mork, is unlikeable, a slacker with no depth. Actually not a single character had much depth but how could they with writing so simple-minded and boring?
The author attempts to interject humor. Oh lord, please help me, is all I can say! Dry, dead-witted and so on. I stopped and asked myself, "Really, did I just hear that? Was it supposed to be funny?"
To top it off, I can't think of a narrator that made me cringe each time he launched into his impressions of what a Norwegian should sound like. Does he really think changing "we" to "vee" and using some stereotypically ridiculous somewhat German lilt will make us think we are in Norway listening to Norwegian detectives? Why in the name of good narration would someone attempt to fake these accents? If a work is translated from its native language into English, read the story without the Hogan's Heroes Colonel Klink affectations. Who thought this was a good idea?
Anyway, I slogged through 2 hours of this drivel hoping the story might get better, hoping I could get used to the narration, hoping I'd stop rolling my eyes, hoping for some redeeming quality such as a story line, but I just had to stop, call Audible and politely ask for a refund.
