Historia
I’m a trained cadet at the Warrior Academy on Haden. I’m female Hoganthan and full of feline ferocity. My squad and I are stretched to the limit, but will NOT. . . ever. . . opt out. So, our instructors sent us on a final test exercise - I think to get rid of us and our attitude. . . or maybe just to get rid of MY attitude. Anyway. That test turned out to be the easy part. Getting attacked again and again was a bit of a surprise, but hey, we’re warriors now. We’re used to it. That’s WHY we are at the Academy in the first place. Right? But. . . being attacked by a Cren invasion ...

Virtual Voice Narration was horrible!
Revisado: 12-28-24
I enjoyed the story, but the virtual voice narration was horrible. At one point I quit listening, though I did return for the compelling story.

Historia
Few know the warship’s actual name. But everyone has heard the rumors. The PUV James Keeling can do something no other vessel in existence can do—slip into another dimension, travel undetected, then re-emerge onto our plane and surprise enemy targets. But the thing that makes the Crypt unique also makes it a nightmare for those onboard; interdimensional travel causes hallucinations, violent behavior, and psychotic breakdowns. Keeling could be the Union’s greatest weapon, a game-changing asset that can defeat the bloodthirsty zealots of the Purist Nation, the Union’s mortal enemy.

Classic Scott Sigler
Revisado: 10-12-23
Scott Sigler owns the hard sci-fi horror genre and The Crypt is an excellent example. The Crypt occurs within the same world as his Galactic Football League series, but can easily be enjoyed by new readers. No one can top Sigler’s imagination for horror, but for me it’s his compelling characters that make each new book worth reading. The characters are very human (even when they’re not). The heroes have flaws and the villains have depth.
I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Very Unsatisfying
Revisado: 01-01-23
The narration was excellent, but I wish I had the time I spent listening back.
I know that is not very helpful but if you feel the same way, don’t bother listening until the end.

Historia
From Joshua Dalzelle comes the follow-up to the number-one best seller Warship. Captain Jackson Wolfe survived the initial incursion of a vicious alien species into human space...barely. He had assumed the juggernaut that had devastated three Terran systems was the herald for a full invasion, but for the last few years it has been eerily quiet along the Frontier. Jackson now struggles to convince the Confederate leadership the threat is still imminent and needs to be taken seriously.

In the spirit of great science fiction this series contains indirect commentary about current issues. But it also includes compelling characters. I look forward to the next book.

Historia
Homicide detective Bryan Clauser is losing his mind. How else to explain the dreams he keeps having - dreams that mirror, with impossible accuracy, the gruesome serial murders taking place all over San Francisco? How else to explain the feelings these dreams provoke in him - not disgust, not horror, but excitement? As Bryan and his longtime partner, Lawrence 'Pookie' Chang, investigate the murders, they learn that things are even stranger than they at first seem.

Classic Sigler
Revisado: 03-15-21
Scott Sigler writes both hard science fiction and horror. Nocturnal is classic Sigler horror with plenty of science and no magic!
Nocturnal starts slowly but the characters are compelling and it reaches a satisfying finale.

Funny and Compelling!
Revisado: 07-09-13
If you like Connie Willis or Neil Gaiman you will enjoy Mur Lafferty.
Mur Lafferty is one of the people who inspired me to begin podcasting, so I am used to consuming her work in the audio format. She is an excellent narrator whose voice transports the listener into whatever slightly odd world she has created. I actually listened to "The Shambling Guide to New York City" at normal speed, instead of speeding it up like I usually do when listening to fiction.
I have been following Mur Lafferty's writing for several years, but I can honestly say that "The Shambling Guide to New York City" is her best work yet. It has her trademark humor along with a completely realized world, well-rounded characters, and a compelling story.
What makes Mur Lafferty's writing stand out from the current rash of fantasy novels is her sense of humor. "The Shambling Guide to New York City" represents her most mature and compelling work. She has a created a complex, believable version of New York City. In addition, her protagonist is fully realized and immensely likable, but she also has inner reserves of strength and courage that make the reader care about her future. I can't wait to see what will happen in the next book.

Historia
LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner. Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s. They are each other’s last chance.

a great story about the power of dogs in our lives
Revisado: 03-05-13
What did you love best about Suspect?
I enjoyed the relationship between the policeman and his dog. Although, Crais gets a little whimsical sometimes when describing things from the dog's point of view, what he writes is accurate enough to satisfy any dog person.
What other book might you compare Suspect to and why?
While superficially like the Chet and Bernie mystery Crais has a more accurate sense of dog intelligence. I would say that if you liked The Art of Racing in the Rain you will enjoy this book (and visa versa).
If you want a real life version of this story I recommend "Until Tuesday: A Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him" by Luis Carlos Montalván.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, but it came close.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

One of my All-time Favorites
Revisado: 07-29-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This book has everything it takes to make a great audiobook: wonderful characters, a compelling story, and memorable voice acting.
What does David LeDoux and John Randolph Jones bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
This book is one that is better in audio because of the voices of the narrators. The story alternates between the past (when the main character was young) and the present (where the same character is an elderly man in a nursing home). The two narrators capture this perfectly and make it easy to tell which part of the story one is listening to.
I think it would have been confusing to read this in print, especially if one set the book down, and came back some time later.
Any additional comments?
It has been over five years since I listened to this book and it remains one of my all-time favorites.
