Historia
In this groundbreaking book, Anita Hannig brings us into the lives of ordinary Americans who go to extraordinary lengths to set the terms of their own death. Faced with a terminal diagnosis and unbearable suffering, they decide to seek medical assistance in dying—a legal option now available to one in five Americans. The Day I Die tackles one of the most urgent social issues of our time: how to restore dignity and meaning to the dying process in the age of high-tech medicine.

Loved it!
Revisado: 01-20-25
This book has opened a door to death for me. When my grandmother passed I was overtaken with grief and questioning myself. Through this book I have started to understand different aspects of death and what it can mean to different people. Death doesn’t have to be scary all of the time.

Historia
Almost six million Americans—about one in every ten people over the age of sixty-five—have Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias, and this number is projected to more than double by 2050. What is it like to live with and amid this increasingly prevalent condition—an affliction that some fear more than death? In My Father’s Brain, the distinguished physician and author Sandeep Jauhar sets his father’s descent into Alzheimer’s alongside his own journey toward understanding this disease and how it might best be coped with, if not cured.

This is a fantastic look on the inside. Although the story is from a physician, the story is personal, and about family.

In Being Mortal, best-selling author Atul Gawande tackles the hardest challenge of his profession: how medicine can not only improve life but also the process of its ending. Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming birth, injury, and infectious disease from harrowing to manageable. But in the inevitable condition of aging and death, the goals of medicine seem too frequently to run counter to the interest of the human spirit.

A must read
Revisado: 04-24-23
My grandmother just passed, I was hugely apart of her care…but I didn’t feel that I did enough. This book helped me better understand the end of life and how we can honor wishes with respect without the need to feel that we must do more. I loved this book

Historia
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells - taken without her knowledge - became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects.

Revisado: 02-18-21
This book is a great story of science and how science affects people. I learned so much reading this book about Henrietta, her family, science, and the research and money that goes into this industry. Thank you for taking the time to tell her and Debra’s story.
