Lots of accents!
Revisado: 08-30-22
This story is certainly engaging, and full of tons of characters. the narrator helps to keep them straight with unique accents and voices for almost every one, which is both fun and helpful! I wish he had done a bit more work on the American dialects he goes for, as they were a bit distracting; and I wish the female voices had not all been soft and breathy (may be appropriate for some, but for Lisbeth Slander??) But overall this was a really nice novel told with a really strong performance. Would recommend.

Page-turner
Revisado: 08-23-22
I couldn't stop once I started! I appreciate the multi-narrator setup, but I wish all the lines spoken by Evelyn - even in conversation - were voiced by her voice counterpart, this was sometimes confusing for me. Otherwise, I'm very happy with this one.

Very enjoyable
Revisado: 01-05-21
This was a good pick off the recent sale list, I'm glad I got it. This is no Room, but Emma Donaghue again demonstrates her talent at keeping us engaged and learning right along with a narrator who is making discoveries throughout. I have a particular affinity for the French language so I actually wish I had read this in hard copy to see the words and work out their meanings more on my own, but unless you're a French language nerd you probably won't have the same problem. It'll just make you, like me, desperate to visit the Côte d'Azur.

Brilliant and so timely
Revisado: 08-20-20
I needed this book when I was first introduced to it almost 15 years ago, and I needed it again right now. The original has so much important and always-relevant information and perspective on MANY racial and ethnic experiences, and the new update relates it all to the world events that we have been living in for decades now. Don't miss the chance to learn from the author herself - an expert facilitator of these challenging and important conversations.

Historia
Seldom does a book have the impact of Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow. Since it was first published in 2010, it has been cited in judicial decisions and has been adopted in campus-wide and community-wide reads; it helped inspire the creation of the Marshall Project and the new $100 million Art for Justice Fund; it has been the winner of numerous prizes, including the prestigious NAACP Image Award; and it has spent nearly 250 weeks on the New York Times best seller list.

Must-read for All Americans
Revisado: 06-09-20
As we all begin or continue our journeys into and through anti-racism, this book should be a cornerstone. Full of important and relevant historical information as well as updated facts and figures, this book helps illustrate the systems which hold our society in the stratified racial castes that we see all around us but don't always understand. In order to fight, we must begin with educating ourselves, and Michelle Alexander has done a heroic amount of work to help with that effort. Her writing is brilliant and beautiful, the narrator's voice is firm but encouraging, and this is simply one book that I couldn't stop until it was through.

Historia
Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

Required Reading
Revisado: 08-18-19
This book is chock-full of unbelievable and important stories of people who didn't deserve the punishments they survived, told from the mouth of the man who stood by them and worked on their behalf. I thought I knew about racial injustice before reading this, but I had so much more to learn about the way it intersects with the justice system. Probably the most important book I'll read this year.

Historia
On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war.

Educational and entertaining
Revisado: 02-26-13
Would you consider the audio edition of Team of Rivals to be better than the print version?
I found that the audio version of this book was great for me, since I would never have finished a book this thick in a timely manner if it were a paper or e-copy. Because I could listen while commuting, cooking, cleaning, etc. while 'reading' I have gotten through it quickly because I always want to listen to this book!At the same time, I plan to buy a paper copy at some point to mark up with notes, making sure that I have all the information straight. This book is full of amazing and thorough research! For me, I will get the most out of it with multiple copies.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Team of Rivals?
There are dozens of incredible moments in this book; since it covers literally all of Lincoln's life as well as those of his main political rivals, you get all the exciting and stories events like the start and battles of the Civil War, the tragic loss of sons, and all the speeches and proclamations. For me, the Emancipation Proclamation was particularly moving to read about, especially within the context of Lincoln's personal history and the opinions of his cabinet.
Which character – as performed by Suzanne Toren – was your favorite?
While Toren thankfully makes it clear which parts of the book are quoted and which are Doris K G's writing, (very valuable in nonfiction, of course!) I did not find that she used separate voices for separate people. Honestly, I think I would have found that to be pretty distracting and inappropriately silly for nonfiction, especially with so many people quoted in the length of the book.
(The only reason for my four stars instead of five is that her 'quote voice' sounds a little bit silly and overdone to me. Not enough to obscure any information, and I am not sure of a better voice to use, but I found it a tad distracting.)
It may seem like a cop-out, but I do believe that Lincoln himself really was my favorite character.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
To be honest, I have not entirely finished this book, so my truthful answer is "not yet". However, Lincoln has always been such a real, admirable, and intriguing hostorical character to me, (and more so with every new piece of information that I learn of him) that I feel certain that at some point, be it at his greatest political acts or his death, I will probably be overcome.
Any additional comments?
Totally worthwhile! Worth the time, worth the cost, (especially if you use a free book coupon for the unabridged version!) and worth the effort to take in all this information. If you are like me, you'll feel like some sort of genius for being so intrigued and engaged in a book that feels as informational and solidly-researched as a textbook. Check it out!
