Rough start due to poor descriptions
Revisado: 01-21-25
My biggest issue was not having any background and poor descriptions of magical creatures. Maybe listening to the audiobook made things harder to understand. I felt like I was thrown into this world I knew nothing about and was just expected to know. I had to check to see if this was the first book (bcz I felt things weren’t introduced well) a few chapters into it. If you can stick with it, it does get better. I didn’t like the voice of Khaan, I felt it sounded like the voice of a proper Shakespearean actor-which doesn’t fit his character at all. It’s also far from how the MFC sees him. I just don’t think the voice is fitting. I hope they come out with a graphic audio version, that might be worth a re-listen.

After reading the reviews I expected the plot to be better. The ‘bad’ guys were revealed at the end, but the story for me was just ‘meh’.

There are people in Edgewater, Oregon, who think that twenty years ago, Rachel Gaston got away with murder. But Rachel still has no idea how a foolish teenaged game turned deadly - or who replaced her soft pellet air gun with a real weapon. When a figure jumped out at her from the darkness, she fired without thinking. By the time she recognized her half-brother, Luke, it was too late.

Historia
It’s been a decade since Trumanell Branson disappeared, leaving only a bloody handprint behind. Her pretty face still hangs like a watchful queen on the posters on the walls of the town’s Baptist church, the police station, and in the high school. They all promise the same thing: We will find you. Meanwhile, Tru's brother, Wyatt, lives as a pariah in the desolation of the old family house, cleared of wrongdoing by the police but tried and sentenced in the court of public opinion and in a new documentary about the crime.

Didn’t deliver….
Revisado: 04-13-23
80% of this book was building up to a climax that didn’t (imo) deliver. When I wait that long to be thrown a bone I expect a better explanation on why things ended up the way they did. It was almost like the author tried to cram 2 stories into one, abandoning the first character and point of view 60-70% of the way through the book and then picking up with a new (ish) character’s pov…not what I like in a novel.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

More about the actresses personal struggles with her mom, less about things that went on at the studio. Overall it was an interesting listen.

So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Don't believe the hype...
Revisado: 07-25-22
I'm not sure what I was expecting but I guess overall a better story? I'm glad I listened to the audio version bcz I would have given up if I had tried to actually read it. The narrator was okay, she did different voices for characters and such. The story was slow moving and seemed to drag out for most of the book. I know the message was supposed to be positive but when the book ended I still felt sad for the main character, like she deserved more than what she was given. I also wonder if the author picked the particular time frame to avoid having to do more in depth research on 'modern' police work, since there was an unanswered question surrounding the case in the novel. It seemed rushed or just lacking detail where there should have been and then dragged out and way too detailed where it didn't need to be.
