This massive new collection features more than 150,000 words of Chizmar's very best short fiction and includes 8,000 words of autobiographical story notes. Richard Chizmar is a master storyteller. A Long December takes the reader on a rollercoaster ride. It is right up there with Stephen King’s Different Seasons. Both are must reads.

Historia
In the summer of 1988, the mutilated bodies of several missing girls begin to turn up in a small Maryland town. The grisly evidence leads police to the terrifying assumption that a serial killer is on the loose in the quiet suburb. But soon a rumor begins to spread that the evil stalking local teens is not entirely human. Law enforcement, as well as members of the FBI, are certain that the killer is a living, breathing madman - and he’s playing games with them.

Wonderful. Engaging. Surprising.
Revisado: 12-07-21
I picked up Chasing the Boogeyman after reading Richard Chizmar’s and Stephen King’s co-authored book Gwendy’s Button Box, followed by Richard Chizmar’s thoroughly enjoyable (and riveting) Gwendy’s Magic Feather. Chasing the Boogeyman is wonderful, especially for those of us who were fortunate enough to grow up in one of the many Edgewoods across the USA. Chasing the Boogeyman is engaging because I couldn’t put it down—Richard Chizmar had me from the first page to the last page of the Author’s Note. Chasing the Boogeyman is surprising for many reasons. And no, I’m not the type to spoil a surprise…or three. That said, I was thrice-surprised. Enjoy Chasing the Boogeyman. I certainly did. Now, on to the rest of Richard Chizmar’s impressive body of work. I’m looking forward to more than a few surprises along the way.

Historia
Nobody is in a better position to tell the story of the shocking final chapter of the Trump show than Jonathan Karl. As the reporter who has known Donald Trump longer than any other White House correspondent, Karl told the story of Trump’s rise in the New York Times best seller Front Row at the Trump Show. Now he tells the story of Trump’s downfall, complete with riveting behind-the-scenes accounts of some of the darkest days in the history of the American presidency.

Betrayal: Required Reading
Revisado: 12-03-21
Jonathan Karl’s Betrayal is a must read for every American who loves our country and the democracy that is its foundation. Disgraced and twice-impeached former POTUS Donald J. Trump, Sr. will go down in history as a man who placed himself above all else, including the people most loyal to him. Karl walks us through the final days of the Trump presidency and the actions of a man who had demanded loyalty above all else but never returned loyalty in any way, shape, or form. Former VP Mike Pence is many things, but he rose to the moment and rejected Trump’s lunacy, and, as a way of thanking Pence, Trump betrayed him, the man who had demonstrated loyalty above all else to a man who deserved nothing of the kind. In the end, this president and his presidency may well be the undoing of our democracy. Only time will tell. There is a body of work that points the way through this awful period. My fear is that not enough Americans will take the time to read Betrayal, Fear, and the other in depth looks at the debacle that was the Trump presidency.

Historia
In Brothers on Three, we follow Phil and Will, along with their teammates, coaches, and families, as they balance the pressures of adolescence, shoulder the dreams of their community, and chart their own individual courses for the future. Brothers on Three is not simply a story about high school basketball, about state championships and a winning team. It is a book about community, and it is about boys on the cusp of adulthood, finding their way through the intersecting worlds they inhabit and forging their own paths to personhood.

Wonderful
Revisado: 11-17-21
Abe Streep’s Brothers on Three is a wonderful story: poignant, exciting, gripping, heartbreaking. There are layers upon layers to Brothers on Three. I enjoyed it from beginning to end. I listened to it on Audible, read it (and listened to it) on my Kindle app, and made notes on my hard copy—my “book.” We often fail to recognize the pressures our children are under. Brothers provides the reader with an intimate look into the lives of the Arlee Warriors. I highly recommend Brothers on Three. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Historia
Deep below the University, there is a dark place. Few people know of it: a broken web of ancient passageways and abandoned rooms. A young woman lives there, tucked among the sprawling tunnels of the Underthing, snug in the heart of this forgotten place. Her name is Auri, and she is full of mysteries. The Slow Regard of Silent Things is a brief, bittersweet glimpse of Auri’s life, a small adventure all her own. At once joyous and haunting, this story offers a chance to see the world through Auri’s eyes.

Expectations
Revisado: 10-31-21
I think Patrick Rothfuss’s explanation regarding the writing of The Slow Regard of Silent Things would have been more effective had he inserted it at the beginning rather than at the end. I was intrigued by Auri in his first two works (of the trilogy?). However, by the end of The Slow Regard of Silent Things, I came away with little more than I started with. Okay, I admit that I have a more complete sense of “who” Auri is, but I thought we’d get to know “Who” she is, how did she get there and why, and so much more. I understand and even liked this story, but I’m not sure I would have started it if I had known where I was going to end up. That said, books 1 & 2 are incredible. Let’s hope Mr. Rothfuss finishes the story of Kvothe at some point—there is so much left undone.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Thoroughly Enjoyable
Revisado: 09-06-21
Andy Weir delivers a story filled with science, friendship, loyalty, hope, humanity and humanness, and a hint of popular culture. You don’t have to be a science nerd to enjoy Hail Mary, but it will help. Not only is this a warning cloaked in a novel, but it is a story about how humanity must come together to solve Earth’s myriad existential challenges. No, we’re not facing the same boogeyman that Grace and Rocky are facing in Hail Mary, but our challenges are every bit as threatening and even more real—more real than many on our fragile planet are willing to admit. This is a must read. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed, but if you are, read it again: time will catch up with the gap between your understanding and Andy Weir’s chosen subject matter. “Question!”

SK at his best!
Revisado: 08-23-21
Once again, Stephen King proves why he is a master storyteller. While Billy Summers is a bit different, it springs from a genre that SK has been flirting with on and off over the course of his long and storied career (couldn’t resist the pun). I found Billy Summers thoroughly entertaining. I had trouble putting it down. I highly recommend Billy Summers. You won’t be disappointed.

Historia
The true story of what took place in Donald Trump’s White House during a disastrous 2020 has never before been told in full. What was really going on around the president, as the government failed to contain the coronavirus and over half a million Americans perished? Who was influencing Trump after he refused to concede an election he had clearly lost and spread lies about election fraud? To answer these questions, Phil Rucker and Carol Leonnig reveal a dysfunctional and bumbling presidency’s inner workings in unprecedented, stunning detail.

Exceptional
Revisado: 08-12-21
I’ve read both A Very Stable Genius and I Alone Can Fix It, as well as Bob Woodward’s Fear and Rage and Michael C Bender’s Frankly, We Did Win This Election (among others). The Washington Post team on Philip Rucker and Carol Leonnig takes the reader on a thorough, thought-provoking, objective ride through the final year of Trump’s tumultuous and divisive presidency. It’s a must read for anyone who, like this reviewer, is still attempting to come to terms with what has happened to our country over the last 5 years—and the final year in particular. This is a must read—a must read.

Aside from a bit of inside information, Frankly, “Frankly, We Did Win This Election is rehashed information anyone who followed the Trump Administration and the 2020 campaign is well-aware of. I rarely give anything but 5 star reviews, but this book demanded less: much less.

Falling is a thrilling ride on Coastal 416. There were times when United Flight 93 came to mind, but this was so much more. I won’t spoil it for you here, but T. J. Newman also hits on a portion of our history that we must all consider. In fact, we are working through many of the same issues today. Highly recommended!
