Historia
A liberal society stands on the proposition that we should all take seriously the idea that we might be wrong. This means we must place no one, including ourselves, beyond the reach of criticism; it means that we must allow people to err, even where the error offends and upsets, as it often will." So writes Jonathan Rauch in Kindly Inquisitors, which has challenged listeners for more than 20 years with its bracing and provocative exploration of the issues surrounding attempts to limit free speech.

Trenchant critique of the war on free speech
Revisado: 08-14-20
Mr. Rauch already saw very clearly the anti-scientific consequences of hate speech laws and where the war on free speech was headed over 25 years ago. He was too optimistic, but forcefully made the case for being so.

Historia
From the hero whistleblower of the infamous Theranos scam, Thicker than Water is a look at never-before-revealed details behind closed doors at the company, revealing a cautionary tale of corporate bullying, gaslighting, ego, and wealth running amok in Silicon Valley. Tyler Shultz had been in the workforce for less than a year when he emailed Elizabeth Holmes, his employer and the CEO and founder of Theranos, with concerns that the company’s lab practices were faulty, ignored quality control, and were potentially dangerous to patients.

Instructive exploration of a culture of fraud
Revisado: 08-08-20
While this would have been better as a fuller, written treatment, the oral history of the power of a fraudulent culture is insightful. Created by a leader who used sex appeal to hoodwink old men who should have known better and tearjerker stories and secrecy to hoodwink almost everyone else, Theranos is a lesson in the dangers of groupthink, hive-mindedness, and conventional wisdom. Tyler Shulz’s speech to his grandfather near the end of the ordeal is courageous and brilliant. I hope he writes a full account at some point.

Flat, boring, meandering plot
Revisado: 08-08-20
A mystery that does not draw listeners in with good clues that move the plot forward. A tedious story.

Historia
Four-time Tony Award® winner Harvey Fierstein takes on New York City’s very own political firebrand, Bella Abzug, in his new raucous, heart-rending, and absurdly humorous solo show. Set in 1976, on the eve of her bid to become New York State’s first female senator, Bella Bella finds this larger-than-life, truth-slinging, groundbreaking, hat-wearing icon squirreled away in the bathroom of a midtown hotel awaiting that night’s election results while a coterie of family and celebs await her entrance. Directing is Kimberly Senior (The Niceties).

More realistic than Mrs America
Revisado: 08-08-20
While a more accurate portrayal of Bella Abzug than Margo Martindale’s in “Mrs America”, that still doesn’t make it revelatory or enjoyable.

In a performance that combines the personal and poetic with the literary and the lyrical, Grammy, Oscar, Emmy, and Golden Globe-winning artist Common spins something entirely new and bold for both his old-school fans and those new to one of hip-hop’s most essential voices. This is Bluebird Memories, part of Audible's Words + Music that blends storytelling, music, and performance to create a one-of-a-kind listening experience.

One decent song
Revisado: 08-08-20
This is an almost endlessly repetitive performance, apart from the beautiful song, “God is Love,” which closes the story. The theology of the song is misguided at best, but the song is lovely. Otherwise, Common is common. Why does so much hip hop sound the same?

Emmy Award winner and former CBS News anchor Dan Rather brings his unforgettable staged performance, Stories of a Lifetime, to the Minetta Lane Theatre, where it will be recorded live for Audible Theater. In this deeply personal show, the legendary Peabody Award-winning journalist takes audiences through the most pivotal moments of his life, from surviving a debilitating illness as a child in Depression-era Texas to covering monumental moments in American history such as the Civil Rights movement, the assassination of JFK, and Watergate.

Revisado: 08-07-20
Mr Rather seems to be blind to his own role in undermining a free and independent press, and has not taken his own advice to listen to his opponents.

This should be taken down and destroyed
Revisado: 03-22-20
If you can imagine a reader whose performance is more stilted than a bad LibriVox narrator AND a video game soundtrack playing behind MARTIN BUBER'S I AND THOU, that is exactly the sacrilege you will hear here. Absolutely unbelievable...by far the worst recording I've ever heard on Audible. It should be deleted and the reader should be barred from posting anything else.
(The narrator claims it's the hardest text he's ever read, so watch out for anything else he's done and click away quickly. To the narrator: please do not ever record a book again.)

Historia
To most audiences, Philip Roth is a literary icon, author of probing, provocative works like American Pastoral, Portnoy’s Complaint, and Goodbye, Columbus. But to James Atlas, Philip Roth was more than just a writer—he was a friend. In 1977, when he was 28, James Atlas published his first book, a biography of the poet Delmore Schwartz, and was stunned to receive a congratulatory letter from Philip Roth. He had been moved by the tragic story it told.

Libido Dominandi
Revisado: 03-08-19
As sad and pathetic as this account and these lives are, the remembrance does illustrate the ouroborotic pain of the inner circle, the anxiety of influence, and the frenetic, unsatisfiable pursuits of the libido dominandi. And then you die.
