Dan Walsh is a great story teller and I enjoy the fact that his books have meaning . The virtual computer narration reading was sometimes hard to listen to (monotone and no inflections or meaning) , and also funny at times . For instance , when 911 was called , the virtual narrator said "Nine hundred and eleven, what's your emergency?" Or when some one's eye teared up the computer narrator said her eyes were "tearing" (as in tearing a piece of paper). There may be a place for computers, it's not in reading books .

"Even though I technically am a pageant girl now , no one would’ve ever labeled me -a farm girl who grew up in a double wide trailer -as one. I didn’t win Miss America for being perfect or pretending to be someone who was. I won Miss America for being true to myself mistakes , mishaps and all. I was 100% Betty Cantrell ."

A quick read that shares the life of Betty Cantrell, Miss Georgia 2015 and Miss America 2016 . Betty was raised humbly in a loving, Christian farm home . It's a refreshing read and delightful to read about a wholesome young woman's journey to becoming Miss USA.

The women had a story to tell, even if the world wasn't quite ready to hear it, and there story began with three simple words - We were there. This book had me fired up at times, crying at others, and kept me turning the page. I also learned a few things along the way . This is a moving story about the dedicated and strong women serving as army nurses in Vietnam , of loss and love , bonding and sisterhood amid the turbulence of war and through their experiences as individuals . It also hits on the residual effects (PTSD) and the shame many felt returning to scornful countrymen (including some family) and a government that essentially turned their back in many ways , especially on the women -There weren't any women in Vietnam! - and their road to healing.
