Historia
The exceptional true story of great dogs, grizzlies, horses, mules, outlaws, and an eccentric frontiersman. Meet Mr. Grizzly is an exquisite look into the life and adventures of a rural New Mexico ranchman, and one of the best dog books ever written. Montague Stevens, a brilliantly innovative sportsman set out to train a pack of the best and most well-trained dogs in the history of bear hunting. Humorous and tear-jerking at times, it is a must read for anyone interested in the sport or anyone who loves dogs, horses, and true stories of adventure. A one-armed Englishman Montague Stevens had ...

Maybe the best book I have ever read!
Revisado: 09-12-24
Imagine if Sherlock Holmes gave up crime and moved to the old west frontier of New Mexico and became a ranchman and grizzly hunter. That is Montague Stevens. He absolutely brilliant.
Glad to see this on audible as I absolutely love this book, the virtual voice is easy to listen to, but it makes a few mistakes here and there.
Would highly recommend to anyone interested in the true west, as well as anyone interested in hounds, horses and hunting. Includes many great stories of frontier life, not just bear hunting.

Historia
The incredible true adventures of an enduring team of man and dogs against the wild frontiers of Alaska. At twenty-four Walden struck out for Alaska. Arriving in the Yukon Territory in the early part of 1896, he was soon hauling freight across the white wilderness by dog-team. A year later came the Big Rush, sweeping in like a flood, bringing with it every manner of man and woman under the sun, all crazed with dreams of gold, schoolteacher and sportsman, dry-goods clerk and lumberjack, minister and thug, young bride and woman of the streets. Dawson, a single log cabin, became a city of ...

Elliot met his wife Kay in a remote Hudson Bay Post in the northern wilderness of Labrador. She had come as he had; to escape the stress, struggles, and hypocrisy of the “civilized” life. She was a nurse there and he became a teacher. But life at a remote wilderness post wasn’t remote enough....

TRUE ADVENTURE IN THE NORTH
Revisado: 10-04-21
How very cold it was there...!
I greatly enjoyed and highly recommend this book of a several month-long journey in the northern wildernesses of Labrador.
I consider this book as one of the best I have read as it tells the story of a group of people who were unable to tell the story themselves. Although the author and his wife were greenhorns unaccustomed to the ways of the wilderness (Author accidentally shoots himself and about chops his foot off with axe) the men that they traveled with were the epitome of wilderness experts. The trappers humor, philosophies, wilderness craft, stories of wilderness and animals and all-around fortitude ring true with someone who has spent many years in the bush himself.
The author was well educated and eloquently writes all of the stories and adventures of their extreme journey and the stories of their companions. He was able travel the 300 plus brutal miles up the grand river by canoe, and the 300 plus brutal miles back down the frozen river as well as the months of wilderness living. Lyle Blaker does a great job with the narration and makes a great story come to life.
Did I mention the cold?!?
Highly Recommended!!!

Historia
When Chick Ferguson made plans to go to the Yukon, he wasn’t planning on taking his newlywed Mary. He definitely was not planning on spending much of the next 18 years in the wilderness. For he was just a photographer with a little studio in a little town in Montana. His business was failing and having heard of the riches of the fur trade he was hoping to spend a year or two trapping, making a stake and returning to his routine life. But he didn’t figure on love....

An amazing true story of grit and adventure in the north country
Revisado: 09-16-21
This was an excellent story of two people matching wits and determination with the extreme cold and brutality of the north. From their trips to and from the cabin by canoe to sled dog journey to raising their child in the wilderness it is an accurate portrayal of life in the far north.
During the time of the great depression and out of work in Montana Mr. Ferguson decides to go north to run traps for a few years and get a fresh start. Little knowing what it would become. Little knowing the hardships he and his wife would have to overcome.
An absolutely amazing TRUE story! Justin Spencer does a great job narrating. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves the great outdoors and is interested to hear about the way it was before the airplane and snow machine. Highly recommended.

Classic Adventure Story for the Ages

A whale of a story of an adventurous couple with their dog. They accomplished a journey in the 1950s without any gps, sat phones, modern technology, that would be extremely difficult today. A great travelogue and adventure tale. The narration is engaging and easy to follow. Would recommend to anyone!

Having grown disillusioned with the miserable existence that is expected of young college students, the newlyweds Bill and Ruth Albee dream of heading to Alaska, on foot, by way of a vast blank space on the map that is modern day Western British Columbia. Like most most dreams, it dug into their body, mind, and soul until nothing could satisfy it until they had given it a try. Revisado: 07-04-21
An exceptionally written, compelling read of a adventurous journey across a vast wilderness. A great story that is not soon forgotten. Bill and Ruth used great ingenuity and perseverance to push through and succeed on their quest.
This book also contains many great descriptions of the colorful frontier characters they met along the way. Like their journey, this book is an excellent study in sociology of the wilderness peoples of the 1930s.
Lyle Blaker does a great job with the narration and his performance is easy to follow and a joy to listen to.
