When Hilton was a boy, his grandmother sacrificed her life to save him from drowning. Thirty years later, he begins to suspect that he was never meant to survive that accident, and that dark forces are working to rectify that mistake. When Hilton's wife, the only elected African-American judge in Dade County, Florida, begins to receive racist hate mail from a man she once prosecuted, Hilton becomes obsessed with protecting his family. The demons lurking outside are matched by his internal terrors - macabre nightmares, more intense and disturbing than any he has ever experienced.

Historia
During a weekend spree in Cape Town, a young, rich Afrikaner fatally injures a teenage street girl with his Range Rover but is too drunk to know he has hit her. His companions - who do know - leave the girl to die. The driver's mother, a self-made mining magnate named Margot Le Roux, intends to keep her son in ignorance of his crime. Why should his life be ruined for a nameless girl who was already terminally ill? No one will care, and the law is cheap. But by chance, the case falls to the relentless Warrant Officer Turner of Cape Town Homicide.

Be curious enough to ask open-ended ?s + listen
Revisado: 07-18-22
Principles of good communication exemplified in 8 important topics (trust, dreams, sex, family, money, etc.) that are encountered in marriage/romantic relationships. But you can apply these ideas to other relationships and topics.. Relate better to others by recognizing whether you want to produce a monologue that you feel is needed or true dialogue and exchange. Are you curious enough to ask open-ended questions that require more from the other than Yes/No? Are you ready to hear and process their answers? Are you able to make space for that to happen?

Historia
For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Do we value data driven approaches or not?
Revisado: 06-26-22
It takes a special mind to be willing to look at past events and/data, gain insights, and apply them to current situations. Those are the people that will help us avoid repeating history...
If we're willing to listen learn.
It seems our leaders (and our society) are not willing, and this will continue to cost us lives, time, and treasure.
Thank you Michael Lewis for telling this fascinating, complicated, but extremely compelling story. I will read more of your works.

Thomas Sowell takes a tough, factual look at whether the civil rights movement has lived up to its hopes or its rhetoric. In the decades since the historic Supreme Court decision on desegregation, who has gained and who has lost? Which of the assumptions behind the civil rights revolution have stood the test of time, and which have proven to be mistaken or even catastrophic to those who were supposed to be helped?

Historia
From the author of the groundbreaking New York Times bestseller The Female Brain, here is the eagerly awaited follow-up book that demystifies the puzzling male brain.
Dr. Louann Brizendine, the founder of the first clinic in the country to study gender differences in brain, behavior, and hormones, turns her attention to the male brain, showing how, through every phase of life, the "male reality" is fundamentally different from the female one. Exploring the latest breakthroughs in male psychology and neurology with her trademark accessibility and candor, she reveals that the male brain:
*is a lean, mean, problem-solving machine. Faced with a personal problem, a man will use his analytical brain structures, not his emotional ones, to find a solution.
*thrives under competition, instinctively plays rough and is obsessed with rank and hierarchy.
*has an area for sexual pursuit that is 2.5 times larger than the female brain, consuming him with sexual fantasies about female body parts.
*experiences such a massive increase in testosterone at puberty that he perceive others' faces to be more aggressive.
The Male Brain finally overturns the stereotypes. Impeccably researched and at the cutting edge of scientific knowledge, this is a book that every man, and especially every woman bedeviled by a man, will need to own.
Praise for The Female Brain:
"Louann Brizendine has done a great favor for every man who wants to understand the puzzling women in his life. A breezy and enlightening guide to women and a must-read for men."
—Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence

Should be required reading in HS and college
Revisado: 01-04-22
The human male condition beautifully explained. Stages of male development from infancy to mature adulthood are outlined and accompany anecdotes. Hormones more than genes, and socialization are attributed to various male behaviors. Although some scientific studies were mentioned, it would have been nice to hear about more studies that suppprt the conclusions about the various stages of development and hormone functions/circuits. It would also be nice to know how well these findings/conclusions/archetypes apply across (non western) cultures. I will share this book and look for more on this topic.

It should be read twice and taught in schools. It is the old principle of supply and demand played out in so many ways amongst different groups of people. Learn what made the colonies in New England, the South, the Midwest, the Southwest and the Pacific so different in their economies, religious denominations, and governance.
