Historia
Doris Grandfelt, an employee at an accounting firm, was brutally stabbed to death . . . but nobody knew exactly where the crime took place. Her body was found the next night, dumped among a dense thicket of trees along the edge of an urban park, eight miles east of St. Paul, Minnesota. Despite her twin sister Lara Grandfelt’s persistent calls to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the killer was never found.

Great plot, story, characters but . . .
Revisado: 03-30-25
Great writing in typical Sandford style but after reading 35 Prey novels, all the Flowers series and the Letty series, I feel more than a little upset and jilted. Hopefully Sandford resolves the issue in the next Prey book (if there is one) and hopefully at my age I live long enough to read it.

Historia
Ancient Egyptian civilization is so grand our minds sometimes have difficulty adjusting to it. It lasted 3,000 years, longer than any other on the planet. Its Great Pyramid of Cheops was the tallest building in the world until well into the 19th century and remains the only Ancient Wonder still standing. And it was the most technologically advanced of the ancient civilizations, with the medical knowledge that made Egyptian physicians the most famous in the world.

Expertise but waaaay toooo loooong
Revisado: 01-29-25
No doubt Prof. Brier is extremely knowledgable. But 48 lectures is way too long, especially as his speaking style is repetitive along with a strong tendency to go down rabbit holes or get lost in the weeds. Splitting the course into two, one chronological, the other to deal with how ancient Egyptians lived might be helpful.

There's a reason this story bombed as a movie at the box office despite starring Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone and Samuel Jackson. The reason is the story is not that good but had great potential.

Historia
At the end of Eric Cline's bestselling history 1177 B.C., many of the Late Bronze Age civilizations of the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean lay in ruins, undone by invasion, revolt, natural disasters, famine, and the demise of international trade. An interconnected world that had boasted major empires and societies, relative peace, robust commerce, and monumental architecture was lost and the so-called First Dark Age had begun. Now, in After 1177 B.C., Cline tells the compelling story of what happened next, over four centuries, across the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean world.

What's given credence and tends to go off-track
Revisado: 12-27-24
Throughout the book, Prof. Cline warns that ancient sources should be taken with a large grain of salt when extolling the virtues and actions of the various leaders and kings, EXCEPT when it comes to what he terms the Hebrew Bible - this he seemingly takes at face value.
Another point which may be just me, when telling about various and sundry kings, pharaohs, monuments, cities, etc. he constantly interrupts the narrative to give background information on who and when artifacts were discovered, what happened to the artifacts, where they're now kept and so on. This information lends itself to being put in footnotes so as not to disrupt the flow of the main narrative. Bad enough in print, very distracting in audible format. His editor should have stepped in.

Historia
From the United States and Britain to continental Europe and beyond, liberal democracy is under siege, while authoritarianism is on the rise. In Twilight of Democracy, Anne Applebaum, an award-winning historian of Soviet atrocities who was one of the first American journalists to raise an alarm about antidemocratic trends in the West, explains the lure of nationalism and autocracy. In this captivating essay, she contends that political systems with radically simple beliefs are inherently appealing, especially when they benefit the loyal to the exclusion of everyone else.

Historia
We think we know what an autocratic state looks like: There is an all-powerful leader at the top. He controls the police. The police threaten the people with violence. There are evil collaborators, and maybe some brave dissidents. But in the 21st century, that bears little resemblance to reality. Nowadays, autocracies are underpinned not by one dictator, but by sophisticated networks composed of kleptocratic financial structures, surveillance technologies, and professional propagandists, all of which operate across multiple regimes, from China to Russia to Iran.

While Stephanie stalls for time, she buries herself in her work as a bounty hunter, tracking down an unusually varied assortment of fugitives from justice. There’s Eugene Fleck, a seemingly sweet online influencer who might also be YouTube star Robin Hoodie, masked hero to the homeless, who hijacks delivery trucks and distributes their contents to the needy.

Revisado: 11-23-24
Spoilers: By the time the apartment was painted, we knew who Robin Hood was. Morelli is a bad choice, He’s always been portrayed as a kind of teenager that never really grew up. Stephanie will be 2nd fiddle to the Rangers, the Giants, the poker game, and the Morelli women. Not to mention what happens when Morelli finds out (and he will) Stephanie was banging Ranger within 3 weeks of the wedding. By book 33, she’ll have cranked out 2 kids and become a trad wife or they’ll be divorced. Ranger on the other hand took himself from nothing to a success, who ALWAYS dropped everything to put himself and all his resources at Plum’s disposal.

Historia
The Myth of Capitalism tells the story of how America has gone from an open, competitive marketplace to an economy where a few very powerful companies dominate key industries that affect our daily lives. Digital monopolies like Google, Facebook, and Amazon are gatekeepers to the digital world. Amazon is capturing almost all online shopping dollars. We have the illusion of choice, but for most critical decisions, we have only one or two companies when it comes to high speed internet, health insurance, medical care, mortgage title insurance, or even consumer goods like toothpaste.

The authors seem to think the over-concentration of capitalism increasingly held by the wealthy can be solved by legislation while failing to realise Citizen’s United also allowed the wealthy to overly concentrate their hold on the legislators.

Historia
Between 1793 and 1794, thousands of French citizens were imprisoned and hundreds sent to the guillotine by a powerful dictatorship that claimed to be acting in the public interest. Only a few years earlier, revolutionaries had proclaimed a new era of tolerance, equal justice, and human rights. How and why did the French Revolution's lofty ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity descend into violence and terror?

Coming of the Terror, indeed
Revisado: 08-12-24
A general history of the French Revolution that essentially ends with the downfall of Robespierre. It's told mostly through anecdotal recitations of letters and diaries to support the author's conclusions. (This seems to be a recurring theme in many histories today, makes one wonder if historians two and a half centuries from now will base conclusions on postings in 4Chan, Tumblr and Grinder?) IMO, the author should have shortened the time frame and not begun with pre-revolutionary France but expounded more broadly on the immediate causes of the Terror, say after the flight of Louis XVI to Varennes? But to each his own. It is obvious the author did a tremendous amount of research, so much so that it seemed he got me lost in the weeds several times. So much so that by the time he gets to the Terror, the horrors of it though mentioned aren't fully exposed.
