While the idea of looking over significant and sometimes insignificant parts and areas of the human world in our history could be interesting, at some point, it just becomes repetitive and a bit encyclopedic.

Father Martin has given a readable and thorough expose of the Ignatian way of exploring life with God while on the road to self (and neighbor) development. The exercise in the Spiritual Exercises helps one feel reinvigorated and responsive in the Spirit of God that is open to all.

Between the playful and intrigued premise which walks the fine line between goodness and evil, Scalzi’s story and Wharton’s narration blend perfectly to give a must-listen novel of joyful malevolence.

More dogma than files

I’ve really been looking forward to this book. I was hoping it was going to have the same high-quality as his podcast with the assistance of co-host Ryan Buffèt. It does not. In addition to it being more of a dogmatic theology text (and not many files), there are many audio editing challenges

Unfortunately, the audio editing in the first few chapters is rather bad and very obvious. There are many spots which were obvious due overs that were placed over the original audio track, instead of taking the time to re-record at the time of original recording.

Father Martin’s podcast had raised the bar for expectations of this book. Despite the quality of content, I found myself trailing off. As it seems to be more of a dogmatic exposition of all the things we do wrong and citing lots of scripture, rather than what his podcast does with dramatic retellings of his experiences.

The issues here are not demonic, but those of human quality assurance and, perhaps, severity in tone. Perhaps the author has become too busy with his many other projects and exorcisms? Perhaps he is showing off a bit? I pray that this is not the quality of Father’s other work. Or I would recommend some time away. This project got away from what it could have been.

No doubt exorcism is serious work and I don’t deny that at all. And, beating people over the head with scripture and dogma in a book meant for the general public, might not have been the best approach. Moreover, if this was the bulk of Father Martins’ experience and knowledge, then he hasn’t left very much for the rest of his podcast or public career.

Less I be misunderstood, I mean, this is no disrespect to Father or his ministry and I’m attempting to outline what I see as challenges and previously set expectations that were not met by the public nature of his podcast ministry already in the public arena. He is a priest of the Roman Catholic Church and must of course state the positions and theology of that church. However, in the time of Pope Francis, I hear very little love, compassion, or mercy in this rather legalistic tone which matches the devil’s legalism. Where is the Mercy? Where is the embrace of prodigal sons? And, importantly, but missing, where is the aftercare?

With sensitive and compassionate style, Dr. Shepherd takes us through some of his most intriguing and sometimes heartbreaking cases from his 30 year career as a medical examiner in England. It reads in a combination of memoir and true crime with touches of self revelation in doing more than 20,000 examinations of individuals to find out the true reasons behind their end of life. An excellent read by an excellent physician, dedicated to helping humanity through his study of our demise.

If you love hearing stories of different historical facts again and again and again and again, you’ll love this! Otherwise, you can use it for anesthesia before surgery.

Judging from purely a literary standpoint, not theological or my own personal dedication to the Blessed Virgin Mary, I found this book to just become very repetitive in his language and presentation. Overlapping story after story. To the point that I had to just stop listening. Better if the author would’ve just written a brief prices on each and then links to Internet resources rather than the kind of storytelling that, unfortunately, makes one stop listening to “and is near the end is near the end is near”. Even if that is the case, if the author is trying to help convert souls, he’s doing it by putting them to sleep and hitting them over the head rather than with more focus and better storytelling. I do salute his effort and pray for him and all of his readers..

This Roman exorcist provides a service to us who pray the rosary with his brief meditations on all the mysteries of the rosary. He provides a point of view which allows the reader to take their place at each scene without sensationalizing and grounded in solid theology.

I really wanted to like this book. I had great sympathy, as I was starting to read it for the horrific thing that this man went through. Then, as I started to read it and listen and got more than halfway through I noticed that everything was so focused about himself (in a pathological way, not as a victim of violence), and everything was about ego preservation in the story. One would think that such a hard fall for a man would’ve been instilled some semblance of humility. Instead, he seems to put the doctors who saved his life has nothing but objects with a generic, single letter for them, and a biting distaste for them. (By extension, since he only refers to his assassin as “A” and his doctors as Dr Hand or Dr. ENT, etc, he dehumanizes and almost disregard most of the people who helped him survive and heal. He seems only interested in the great rallies that are held in his name, and only those who could actually do something he could quantify as advancing his life or career. He gives the full name of his hand therapist, but quickly says that she said that she would read all of his 20+ books in order.

I wanted to feel empathy for this man. I truly did. But by 2/3 of the way through the book, I just couldn’t believe how he seemed to have little gratitude and no real change to his egocentric and overly righteous worldview.

I’ve never read his other books. And if this kind of tone is even half present in his books, I can see why people would take great offense to him and his works. My sadness, in the end, is not for him as a victim, but as a man. I wish him well.
