Historia
Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

Echoing the Accolades
Revisado: 06-22-24
Truly, this is a most outstanding adventure into history. History that I lived through but now understand with greater clarity. The details, descriptions, characters, laughter, tears, empathy and the messages of hope, love, unity and forgiveness ,,, simply splendid! As always, Julia Whelan ‘brings the story home’ to us - her performance, outstanding!
I believe that Ms. Hannah’s novel, The Women, should be selected for the Best Book of the Year Award 2024.

Historia
Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. That is, he loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs for weeklong visits, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of caretaking and relating to two children, no matter how adorable, Patrick is, honestly, overwhelmed. So when tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick's brother has a health crisis of his own, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian.

Humor & Heart
Revisado: 05-06-24
Don’t miss this one! Rowley has a way with words. It is a delight to the literate ear. Humor prevails - but heart permeates the narrative. The wit is sharp, the complexity of grief, understandable. The sample that Audible uses doesn’t do the story justice.

TEDIOUS
Revisado: 08-11-23
I listened for over 2 hours. I wanted to like it. However, in my opinion, the storyline & narrator would be akin to Sergeant Joe Friday of Dragnet 'fame'. It was tedious and boring. It was not suspenseful or a thrilling novel of twists and turns. It was like reading a manual for detective crime interviews. Since I couldn't return this title - I skipped to the last 30 minutes of the book. I hadn't missed anything. Save your credit/money ...

Excellent Contemporary Fiction
Revisado: 03-10-22
I had the pleasure of hearing the author, Richard Farrell speak in person about his novel. It's based on actual fact of people who have survived falling out of an airplane. He is extremely knowledgeable in the field of aviation and he further researched extensively to prepare. And his hard work paid off. He creates robust characters and tells a good story. It's a compelling read. He is a talented and creative author and I look forward to more novels by him.

Historia
Single mom Jess Davis is a data and statistics wizard, but no amount of number crunching can convince her to step back into the dating world. Jess holds her loved ones close but working constantly to stay afloat is hard...and lonely. But then Jess hears about GeneticAlly, a buzzy new DNA-based matchmaking company that’s predicted to change dating forever.

Interesting Idea!
Revisado: 03-10-22
DNA Testing for Matchmaking? This is not Tinder - it's scientific which makes this novel interesting. It's a fun, light read. It reminded me of a romance novel - without the heaving bosoms. However, there is some soft suggested erotica. That's not a negative ... It's a cute story - not totally predictable [maybe just a little]. For me, it was a break I needed from some other the heavier content I had been reading. I would recommend it - not as great literature but as comic relief.

Historia
Before he was the Gray Man, Court Gentry was Sierra Six, the junior member of a CIA action team. In their first mission, they took out a terrorist leader, at a terrible price. Years have passed. The Gray Man is on a simple mission when he sees a ghost: the long-dead terrorist, but he's remarkably energetic for a dead man. A decade of time hasn't changed the Gray Man. He isn't one to leave a job unfinished or a blood debt unpaid.

Well Woven Tale of Past & Present
Revisado: 03-10-22
Mark Greaney is continuing to embellish the character of Cort Gentry. Cort is a complex character to begin with. However, by weaving the tale of his 'baptism by fire' into Sierra Six (12 years prior) and his current day mission, the reader gains a deeper understanding of their hero. People who have complained that they had trouble keeping the two storylines straight were probably distracted while they were listening. The author and narrator make clear distinctions for the readers. I've enjoyed all the Gray Man novels but I particularly like it when Greaney changes up his style or takes a different approach to telling Cort's adventures. He doesn't write 'formula fiction' like so many other writers. Writing novels is a challenge (especially a series) and I appreciate when the author doesn't just "phone it in". Creativity keeps his work fresh.
I would highly recommend reading this novel and disregard the "nay-sayers".

Historia
August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city - after all, she’s never been much of a reader.

Truly Inspiring
Revisado: 08-01-21
Since you are already a fan of good literature, enjoy splendid narration of good stories well told and have a love for learning from excellent historical fiction - this book selection is a natural. No need to hesitate - it's a winner on all counts. It's also a heartfelt tribute to the strength and character of the British people who endured so much.

Historia
At the height of WWII, five idealistic young Americans receive a mysterious letter from the OSS, asking them if they are willing to fight for their country. The men and women from very different backgrounds - a Texan athlete with German roots, an upper-crust son of a French mother and a wealthy businessman, a dirt-poor Midwestern fly fisherman, an orphaned fashion designer, and a ravishingly beautiful female fencer - all answer the call of duty, but each for a secret reason of his or her own. They bond immediately, in a group code-named Dragonfly.

A whole different approach
Revisado: 06-16-21
I've been reading a theme stream of WW2 historical Resistance novels recently. Each has been so very different. I have learned so much about so many different aspects of how the war was won and the group & individual contributions made a significant contribution to the Allied Victory. This is an excellent novel. Well-written and beautifully performed. Don't let all the different code name etc at the beginning put you off. Hang in there. It's great!

Exceptional!
Revisado: 05-30-21
Ariel Lawhon is an exceptional author. Beautifully written, It's the story of the French Resistance fighters in the countryside of France who made an incredible difference in defeating the Nazis. However, they couldn't have done it without Nancy Wake. This is historical fiction at its finest based on a real person - a strong, confident woman [not necessarily cut out for war] who persevered - a woman of courage who helped the men and women of the French Resistance succeed. I was riveted from start to finish, The narrator was perfect. And if that wasn't enough... it's a story of humanity and a love story as well. I highly recommend this novel.

Brilliant!
Revisado: 05-30-21
While having read multiple historical fiction novels regarding WWII - this was the first that gave me insight to Bletchley Park. The author beautifully weaves the history through rich characters and unusual circumstances. Flips seamlessly - with no confusion - between the wartime & postwar time. Well done! Love this author! Great story.!! Narrator performed brilliantly - easy to understand and exemplified the character to a tee.
