Good story but pitiful narration
Revisado: 02-07-25
I am so sorry but the narrator made the female lead sound like a whiny, petulant child. I almost never leave a bad review but I almost turned it off so many times.
It’s unfortunate because I want to know what happens to the rest of the Gents but I cannot abide this narrator.

Historia
Even a life on the untamed plains of Africa can't prepare Wilhelmina for the wilds of an English boarding school in this lovely and lyrical novel from the author of Rooftoppers, which Booklist called "a glorious adventure". Wilhelmina Silver's world is golden. Living half-wild on an African farm with her horse, her monkey, and her best friend, every day is beautiful. But when her home is sold and Will is sent away to boarding school in England, the world becomes impossibly difficult.

When Major Greyleigh, a local recluse and former hangman, is found dead after a breakfast of poisonous mushrooms, suspicion falls on the de Luce family’s longtime cook, Mrs. Mullet.

Solid gothic mystery

Great setting and characters. Liked the multiple mysteries spanning generations. Readers voice was a little stilted and a little too much coincidence in the plot. Overall, I enjoyed it.

This one was so mind bending! It held my interest as long as I just enjoyed the ride and didn’t try too hard to understand it all. The author is totally brilliant. I must say though I was very ready for it to be over! Not recommended if you want something light.

Cheesy!
Revisado: 11-23-22
I only made it about an hour in. Her stream of consciousness made me cringe. It was like listening to a bad mental stand up routine. Who would be cracking jokes in her head when your husband is missing. If it wasn’t free, I’d ask for my money back.

Historia
Inspector Treadles, Charlotte Holmes’ friend and collaborator, has been found locked in a room with two dead men, both of whom worked with his wife at the great manufacturing enterprise she has recently inherited. Rumors fly. Had Inspector Treadles killed the men because they had opposed his wife’s initiatives at every turn? Had he killed in a fit of jealous rage because he suspected Mrs. Treadles of harboring deeper feelings for one of the men? To make matters worse, he refuses to speak on his own behalf, despite the overwhelming evidence against him.

Sorry but this one was boring and too wordy. Too much conversation and reading their thoughts and not enough action. Got more than half way before giving up. Not a fan of the reader either.
