I buy some books because they are "of a type." I bought DS Kane's Blood Ridge because I hadn't read one of his books and wanted to try one and because I thought it might kill time on a long drive. Blood Ridge did not kill time. It annihilated it. I lost all sense of time on my drive, and I missed my exit at my destination because I was too much in the story. I didn't finish the book on my trip, and I found myself doing house chores when I got home in order to keep listening. I hate house chores. Good fun. Fast pace. Detailed research. Perfect reader. Excellent, convoluted spy story and origin story for a series character.

I read this book in print before I listened to it. I have to say that it was two different experiences, and both were wonderful. Occassionaly, I get excited about a piece of historical fiction. However, it is rare. Historical fiction needs to have a couple of very important pieces in place to hold my attention. First, it has to be about the people in that moment in history instead of about the history around the people. Second, it has to be written well enough that I believe in my experience in the skin of the characters. The Door that Faced West came up a solid 5 stars on both counts.

Gotta love secret societies vs. Google.

I didn't want to finish Mr. Penumbra’s Twenty-Four Hour Book Store by Cherie Priest. I simply liked being in the story. As a sometimes fantasy writer, I especially like how a series of fantasy dragon novels worked their way into the experience. I liked the way she developed the parallel between the 15th century culture of printing and the modern internet revolution. That, I must say, was brilliant and well worth the price and time. I also loved the role of Google and the way she portrayed the people at Google. Since a large part of my life has been spent in high-tech, and because I write fiction, I have often wondered how to use the experience of cube farms as a part of my fiction. It has always stumped me, but I think she did it with honesty and flair. Finally, I loved—absolutely loved—the character Mr. Penumbra and how his bit of the ending played out.
