An entertaining ghost story romance
Revisado: 05-02-25
I enjoyed the story and the characters. It’s pretty spicy in a few places but well written, emphasizing the romance. Was it the ghosts or the real people? The AI narration tales some getting used to, but overall it was acceptable. After listening to this book, I decided to publish an AI narrated book of my own. It’s a good, imaginative story and I recommend it to romance readers.

Historia
Death is reporter Jack McEvoy's beat: his calling, his obsession. But this time, death brings McEvoy the story he never wanted to write - and the mystery he desperately needs to solve. A serial killer of unprecedented savagery and cunning is at large. His targets: homicide cops, each haunted by a murder case he couldn't crack. The killer's calling card: a quotation from the works of Edgar Allan Poe. His latest victim is McEvoy's own brother. And his last...may be McEvoy himself.

Great Detective Story
Revisado: 07-30-23
I don't typically read cop, detective, or crime stories, but I was drawn to this novel by many of the comments and the fact that I was looking for something different. This book did not disappoint. Great story and a page turner.

On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called the Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all.

Sci Fi at its Best
Revisado: 07-30-23
This novel is a classic. Incredibly imaginative characters and their stories. Plenty of science related context, but the emphasis is on the unusual characters. I didn't want it to end, so I can't wait to read the sequel.

Historia
When Robert Baratheon died suddenly after a boar hunt, all hell broke loose. When Edward IV, King of England, died suddenly after a fishing trip in April 1483, another phase of the Wars of the Roses ensued, the Yorks (Starks) battling the Lancasters (Lannisters). Thwarted Queen is told mainly in the voice of Lady Cecylee Neville (1415-1495), the thwarted queen, but other voices are important to this tale, not least those of the Londoners, who forged their own political destiny by engaging in public debate with the powerful aristocrats of the time

Fascinating and Entertaining
Revisado: 07-30-23
I must admit that my initial draw to this novel was that it was about the House of York - my name is York. Years ago, I read two other novels related to this subject, so Thwarted Queen felt familiar. But I found Cynthia Sally Haggard's story to be fresh, well written, and very interesting. The performance was also outstanding, causing the characters to really come alive for me. This is one of the few books that I've finished within just a few days. Although I knew how the tale ends, historically, I was still compelled to read on about the details. What a tangled web of intrigue and political maneuvering! It is interesting to see how authors and historians vary widely in their portrayals of Cecylia, Edward IV, Richard III, and Elizabeth. It explains why some of the reviews for this novel claim historical inaccuracies. It's a matter of perspective I suppose. Nevertheless, this is an excellent read and well worth the investment of time.

Really enjoyed this story. It just kept moving at a great pace and was fun to read and I didn't have to think about some message the author was trying to promote. Just a good story that takes your mind off of everyday life.

Unique and compelling
Revisado: 03-02-23
This is definitely a unique story. I’m am surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The performance was brilliant in my opinion and helped to make this novel so entertaining. I think it requires some degree of persistence to go the distance because of its unusual topic but I thought it was compelling and beautifully written. If you appreciate good literature you should read or listen to this book

Fast Paced Cautionary Tale
Revisado: 01-09-23
An interesting and entertaining story that is a frighteningly realistic look at what our near future world could look like. Our over dependence on technology and lack of understanding about how much personal information is being collected provides corporations and governments with the power to control. The author's obvious knowledge of high tech makes the tale believable. Most of the technology in the story is already in use or in research and development. Great hacker names for the good guys. I recommend this book if you like hi-tech sci-fi.

Historia
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

I listened to this audiobook at the recommendation of my wife. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the performance by the author. Writing this story in the first person made feel personal and I think was a good choice. I recommend this book to just about anyone who loves a good story.

Historia
August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city - after all, she’s never been much of a reader.

A different War Story
Revisado: 08-19-22
I have read many novels and non-fiction accounts of World War II. I have enjoyed almost all of them but I began to get a little burned out on the genre and topic. After a couple of years of passing these tales by, I was drawn to this one because of the bookshop angle. I'm very glad I decided to read yet one more WWII story. The Last Bookshop is an excellent novel that describes, what I felt, was a different perspective of how the war effected everyday people. It was entertaining and engaging, and the characters were well developed. Definitely recommend.

Historia
Scarred by the senseless death of their son and baffled by the engulfing chaos of the 1960s, Joe Allston and his wife, Ruth, have left the coast for a California retreat. And although their new home looks like Eden, it also has its serpents: Jim Peck, a messianic exponent of drugs, yoga, and sex, and Marian Catlin, an attractive young woman whose otherwordly innocence is far more appealing—and far more dangerous.

Poetic Prose - Wonderful
Revisado: 08-19-22
This story is written with such incredible description, it's difficult to describe given my comparatively sparse vocabulary. It is beautiful, despite the inherent sorrow of the story. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, including the narration by Edward Herrmann, who was perfect. If you appreciate sophisticated literature, you will enjoy this book, albeit the sad tale it tells.
