Historia
Changeling knight in the court of the Duke of Shadowed Hills, October “Toby” Daye has survived numerous challenges that would destroy fae and mortal alike. Now Toby must take on a nightmarish new assignment. Someone is stealing both fae and mortal children — and all signs point to Blind Michael. When the young son of Toby’s closest friends is snatched from their Northern California home and his sister falls into a coma-like state, the situation becomes way too personal.

I have to grit my teeth through the narrator
Revisado: 04-03-21
Great book. Fantastic book. But words cannot express how much I can't stand this narrator. Her enunciation is off, putting emphasis on the wrong part of sentences and overly pronouncing every syllable and letter in words. Half the side characters become valley girls whether it fits the character or not. If I didn't love the books so much I'd have returned them because of her.

Historia
There's something wrong with Ashburn House. The ancient building has been the subject of rumours for close to a century. Its owner, Edith, refused to let guests inside and rarely visited the nearby town. Following Edith's death, her sole surviving relative, Adrienne, inherits the property. Adrienne's only possessions are a suitcase of luggage, 20 dollars, and her pet cat. Ashburn House is a lifeline she can't afford to refuse. Adrienne doesn't believe in ghosts, but it's hard to ignore the unease that grows as she explores her new home.

Needed a better narrator
Revisado: 03-21-21
The only complaint I have about this is the book is clearly set in England but the narrator has an American accent. Other than that it was spooky and I was getting uneasy even in the daylight. Clever heroine who rises to the occasion as well. Excellent read.

Sweet and satisfying romances!
Revisado: 01-13-20
I am amazed at how much variety the author was able to create with the same format without having the characters feel like copy and paste versions of each other. I've read more famous authors who don't even pull that off. Very sweet reads with affectionate romances and a town that slowly becomes more and more prosperous thanks to the fresh blood. Definitely a comfort listen for me from now on!

Great entry to this series
Revisado: 10-10-17
I absolutely loved this. It actually creeped me out as much as the first one. The author is very good at building subtle tension. We get a lot more detail on the web that we saw was in place in the first one, and the ever present spider at the center of it does not disappoint in this one. I loved how completely outmatched the characters are by the entity. I honestly have no clue how it's going to end and it's great. The narrator is just spot on as the now-frazzled professor as well. Highly recommended, especially at this time of year just before Halloween.

Good, creepy start
Revisado: 09-25-17
I enjoyed it a lot, it was just a shade gorier than I like. Interesting premise though, and I don't remember the last time I read a book with a black heroine. It was different, but in a good way. I liked Hakim more than Abigail I think, and I hope they get closer in the next book because they made a really good team in this one. Can't wait to see what happens next in the series!

Fun take on Urban Fantasy
Revisado: 09-15-17
This book was a pretty good romp in an action packed world with a reluctant hero who has a decent core. All of the characters were well-developed and just felt familiar, like a family or rig circle of friends. The damsel in distress is a little boy, which was a fun take on the trope of kidnapped princesses. And Frank just plain has grit, rolling with every new setback and still coming out swinging. Lots of fun to listen to, I'd recommend it whole-heartedly.

Historia
College professor Stephen Barlow needs cash. Badly. He puts his skepticism aside and signs on to a paranormal research organization in the hopes of scoring a fat bonus. Enter Chaythe Asylum: a long-shuttered and controversial institution where patients were allegedly subjected to unethical experiments. Stephen deems the old building, closed in 1989 after a series of grisly murders, as good a place as any to explore the possibility of the supernatural, and arranges to take a tour with his students. But it turns out that the asylum is not as abandoned as it seems. There is something sinister in the building.

Creepy and enjoyable
Revisado: 09-09-17
The story was so good, gradually building tension basically from the beginning until I was actually looking over my shoulder a couple times. The plot itself was fairly generic (creepy haunted asylum, what do?!), but the writing helped transcend that for me, which is what any good author should do. The narrator was spot on as well, he sounded exactly how I would imagine the professor to sound. A little jaded, a little skeptical, a little disbelieving, and a little unnerved in some parts. The only disappointment for me was that it ended, so I'm really looking forward to the next book!

Slow burner but satisfying
Revisado: 08-30-17
I had no idea what to expect from this but I was very pleasantly surprised with how tightly this was written. It wasn't as compelling as, say, the Wheel of Time series but it was a very complete world with plenty of room to explore. I especially liked the different roles with the swords and the use of magic as an addiction. The side characters had depth, the hero was very relatable as a dragon who doesn't understand who he is. It was a beautiful twist on the farmboy trope, the how and why of Darnuir's situation. And Dukoona was such a good character, I just wanted more of him.
The whole book had a feeling of rising tension that hasn't quite been satisfied, so I'm definitely getting the next book. I can't wait to see how the pieces of this world fall into place.
