When Tenzin Lahkpa is 15 years old, his parents give him over to a local temple in Tibet as an offering. Twisting the Dharma
Revisado: 12-17-24
I don't doubt the truth of the couple of pages the author said "Tenzin" actually authored. The rest is basically fiction, or at least stretching the boundaries of what might be called biography. Much of it is written to cater to western readers who have no understanding of Buddhism or the Dharma. While most of the facts presented about Tibetan Buddhism are accurate, they are also used in way that suggests they are true for all of Buddhism, which is false. For example, Tibetan Buddhism includes a strong lineage of Tibetan ancestral/traditional religion, such as the gods mentioned at several points, however, Buddhism at large does not preach any gods, spirits, etc. This is a result of the admixture of Tibetan beliefs TO Buddhism rather than a fact about Buddhism as such. Further, the authors claim that Buddhism does not teach love. This is simply false. Metta (usually translated as "loving-kindness") actually is very similar to the agape love taught by the early Christians.
Overall, either the authors have intentionally twisted the facts in order to slander the Dharma and the Buddha, not to mention the Sangha, or the authors simply do not understand Buddhism at all, despite understanding some facts about a certain branch of it.
That all said, Tenzin's abuse at the hands of a powerful religious organization, and at the hands of a drunken, highly religious father in a rural backwater, are things that I can absolutely relate to, as can many other people who were brought up in the Christian West. I understand this pain, and I wish the author/authors had the decency to recognize that this is not a Buddhist problem, nor even a Tibetan one, but a problem that people the world over have had to contend with since time immemorial. Such abuse originates from drunkenness and power, two of the most dangerous forces in this world.
Approach with caution and do not take anything. in this book at face value.

AI garbage
Revisado: 11-25-24
The AI voice model is actually pretty good, shockingly. The writing though, which is CLEARLY heavy on use of AI is redundant, muddy, and repetitive. Most of the book is characterized by passages in which the same dozen or so words are reordered over and over to form new variations on the same sentence until the desired word count (I assume) has been reached. Recommend only to someone looking for the most basic of primers on Rastafari and with the patience of a saint.

Outstanding
Revisado: 07-18-18
Only time will tell, but in my estimation this book will be considered an important work held in the same esteem as those by Socrates, Dostoyevsky, and Mertons. The only issue I have with Peterson's reading is that at times he seems to be affecting emotion in a disingenuous or rehearsed way. At other times his voice is filled with genuine emotion, which comes across very well and adds to the strength of his words.
