These people are celebrities now. What was it like when they were just a couple friends with an idea? Founders like Steve Wozniak (Apple), Caterina Fake (Flickr), Mitch Kapor (Lotus), Max Levchin (PayPal), and Sabeer Bhatia (Hotmail) tell you in their own words about their surprising and often very funny discoveries as they learned how to build a company.

Historia
In The Outsiders, you'll learn the traits and methods striking for their consistency and relentless rationality that helped these unique leaders achieve such exceptional performance. Humble, unassuming, and often frugal, these "outsiders" shunned Wall Street and the press, and shied away from the hottest new management trends. Instead, they shared specific traits that put them and the companies they led on winning trajectories: a laser-sharp focus on per share value as opposed to earnings or sales growth; an exceptional talent for allocating capital and human resources; and the belief that cash flow, not reported earnings, determines a company's long-term value.

Historia
During his lifetime, Buckminster Fuller was hailed as one of the greatest geniuses of the twentieth century. As the architectural designer and futurist best known for the geodesic dome, he enthralled a vast popular audience, inspired devotion from both the counterculture and the establishment, and was praised as a modern Leonardo da Vinci. To his admirers, he exemplified what one man could accomplish by approaching urgent design problems using a radically unconventional set of strategies, which he based on a mystical conception of the universe’s geometry.

Historia
Robert Iger became CEO of The Walt Disney Company in 2005, during a difficult time. Competition was more intense than ever, and technology was changing faster than at any time in the company’s history. His vision came down to three clear ideas: Recommit to the concept that quality matters, embrace technology instead of fighting it, and think bigger - think global - and turn Disney into a stronger brand in international markets.

Great but not the best
Revisado: 09-05-24
It is great to get an internal view of world’s biggest ever acquisition spree in entertainment. I liked the accounts of personal engagements but there was not a coherent picture of a person or a specific time. This is what autobiographies usually lack: narrative, objectivity, historic context etc.

Historia
Famously, over a four-year period, James Dyson made 5,127 prototypes of the cyclonic vacuum cleaner that would transform the way houses are cleaned around the world. In devoting all his resources to iteratively developing the technology, he risked it all, but out of many failures and setbacks came hard-fought success. In Invention: A Life, Dyson reveals how he came to set up his own company and led it to become one of the most inventive technology companies in the world. It is a compelling and dramatic tale, with many obstacles overcome.

Wish to hear more about 5126 failures
Revisado: 08-20-24
This was a great biography but also a case for why autobiographies lack certain qualities. I admired and learned a lot from Mr. Dyson’s life but the last three hours was mostly about a man sharing his view extensively. I understand his need to leave a clean legacy and goes in long time to explain bbc scandal, etc. The most intriguing parts for the reader are those 5000+ experiments or how some of the key products came into life is missing details in the book. Up until very last parts in post-scripts, there is almost no hint about Mr. Dyson’s competitiveness, stubbornness, personal style etc. It would be great to have external view on mr. Dyson’s life to see things at a better light from another author.

Digital transformation is no longer news - it's a necessity. For more than a decade, Gupta has studied digital transformation at Fortune 500 companies. He knows what works and what doesn't. Merely dabbling in digital or launching a small independent unit, which many companies do, will not bring success. Instead you need to fundamentally change the core of your business and ensure that your digital strategy touches all aspects of your organization: your business model, value chain, customer relationships, and company culture.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Great biography but longer than necessary
Revisado: 01-02-24
The life of George Washington is smoother compared to other great names in the history. If you are not American, you can skip or listen the book on x2 speed because there so many trivial details. Dont get me wrong, he is a great man but his life is not dramatic or captivating like Napoleon or Frederick the Great. He is a better politician than a businessman than a soldier. Yet, his character is what was needed to build the union.
