Acerca de esta escucha
From Alec Nevala-Lee, the author of the Hugo and Locus Award finalist Astounding, comes a revelatory biography of the visionary designer who defined the rules of startup culture and shaped America’s idea of the future.
During his lifetime, Buckminster Fuller was hailed as one of the greatest geniuses of the twentieth century. As the architectural designer and futurist best known for the geodesic dome, he enthralled a vast popular audience, inspired devotion from both the counterculture and the establishment, and was praised as a modern Leonardo da Vinci. To his admirers, he exemplified what one man could accomplish by approaching urgent design problems using a radically unconventional set of strategies, which he based on a mystical conception of the universe’s geometry. His views on sustainability, as embodied in the image of Spaceship Earth, convinced him that it was possible to provide for all humanity through the efficient use of planetary resources. From Epcot Center to the molecule named in his honor as the buckyball, Fuller’s legacy endures to this day, and his belief in the transformative potential of technology profoundly influenced the founders of Silicon Valley.
Inventor of the Future is the first authoritative biography to cover all aspects of Fuller’s career. Drawing on meticulous research, dozens of interviews, and thousands of unpublished documents, Nevala-Lee has produced a riveting portrait that transcends the myth of Fuller as an otherworldly generalist. It reconstructs the true origins of his most famous inventions, including the Dymaxion Car, the Wichita House, and the dome itself; his fraught relationships with his students and collaborators; his interactions with Frank Lloyd Wright, Isamu Noguchi, Clare Boothe Luce, John Cage, Steve Jobs, and many others; and his tumultuous private life, in which his determination to succeed on his own terms came at an immense personal cost. In an era of accelerating change, Fuller’s example remains enormously relevant, and his lessons for designers, activists, and innovators are as powerful and essential as ever.

When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.

On July 4, 2012, the announcement came that one of the longest-running mysteries in physics had been solved: the Higgs boson, the missing piece in understanding why particles have mass, had finally been discovered. On the rostrum, surrounded by jostling physicists and media, was the particle’s retiring namesake—the only person in history to have an existing single particle named for them. Why Peter Higgs? Drawing on years of conversations with Higgs and others, Close illuminates how an unprolific man became one of the world’s most famous scientists.

In 1945, Edith Farnsworth asked the German architect Mies van der Rohe, already renowned for his avant-garde buildings, to design a weekend home for her outside of Chicago. Edith was a woman ahead of her time—unmarried, she was a distinguished medical researcher, as well as an accomplished violinist, translator, and poet. The two quickly began spending weekends together, talking philosophy, Catholic mysticism, and, of course, architecture over wine-soaked picnic lunches.

You may be surprised to learn that microchips are the new oil—the scarce resource on which the modern world depends. Today, military, economic, and geopolitical power are built on a foundation of computer chips. Virtually everything—from missiles to microwaves—runs on chips, including cars, smartphones, the stock market, even the electric grid. Until recently, America designed and built the fastest chips and maintained its lead as the #1 superpower, but America’s edge is in danger of slipping, undermined by players in Taiwan, Korea, and Europe taking over manufacturing.

Some 40 million miles of roadways encircle the earth, yet we tend to regard them only as infrastructure for human convenience. While roads are so ubiquitous they're practically invisible to us, wild animals experience them as entirely alien forces of death and disruption. In Crossings, environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb travels throughout the United States and around the world to investigate how roads have transformed our planet. A million animals are killed by cars each day in the US alone, but as the new science of road ecology shows, the harms of highways extend far beyond roadkill.

Before 1870, humanity lived in dire poverty, with a slow crawl of invention offset by a growing population. Then came a great shift: invention sprinted forward, doubling our technological capabilities each generation and utterly transforming the economy again and again. Our ancestors would have presumed we would have used such powers to build utopia. But it was not so. When 1870-2010 ended, the world instead saw global warming; economic depression, uncertainty, and inequality; and broad rejection of the status quo.

In the weeks after Japan finally surrendered to the Allies to end World War II, the world turned to the question of how to move on from years of carnage and destruction. For Harry Truman, Douglas MacArthur, Chiang Kai-shek, and their fellow victors, the question of justice seemed clear: Japan’s militaristic leaders needed to be tried and punished for the surprise attack at Pearl Harbor; shocking atrocities against civilians in China, the Philippines, and elsewhere; and rampant abuses of prisoners of war in notorious incidents such as the Bataan death march.

Thelonious Monk is the critically acclaimed, gripping saga of an artist's struggle to "make it" without compromising his musical vision. It is a story that, like its subject, reflects the tidal ebbs and flows of American history in the 20th century. To his fans, he was the ultimate hipster; to his detractors, he was temperamental, eccentric, taciturn, or childlike. His angular melodies and dissonant harmonies shook the jazz world to its foundations, ushering in the birth of "bebop" and establishing Monk as one of America's greatest composers.

Jonathan Eig sheds important new light on Ali’s politics, religion, personal life, and neurological condition through unprecedented access to all the key people in Ali’s life.

Simon Schama explores the mysterious contradictions of the Dutch nation that invented itself from the ground up, attained an unprecedented level of affluence, and lived in constant dread of being corrupted by happiness. Drawing on a vast array of period documents and sumptuously reproduced art, Schama recreates in precise detail a nation's mental state. He tells of bloody uprisings and beached whales, of the cult of hygiene and the plague of tobacco, of thrifty housewives and profligate tulip-speculators.

In March 1943, in their first fight with the Germans, American soldiers in North Africa were pushed back 50 miles by Rommel’s Afrika Korps and nearly annihilated. Only the German decision not to pursue them allowed the Americans to maintain a foothold in the area. General Eisenhower, the supreme commander, knew he needed a new leader on the ground, one who could raise the severely damaged morale of his troops. He handed the job to a new man: Lieutenant General George Patton.

Opal Chen reunites with her Chinese sisters after forty years; newly cosmopolitan Lulu Koo wonders why Americans “like to walk around in the woods with the mosquitoes”; Hong Kong parents go to extreme lengths to reestablish contact with their “number-one daughter” in New York; and Betty Koo, brought up on “no politics, just make money,” finds she must reassess her mother’s philosophy. With their profound compassion and equally profound humor, these eleven linked stories trace the intimate ways in which humans make and are made by history.

Family defined the cultural identity of Prachi and her brother, Yush, connecting them to a larger Indian American community amid white suburbia. But their belonging was predicated on a powerful myth: the idea that Asian Americans, and Indian Americans in particular, have perfected the alchemy of middle-class life, raising tight-knit, high-achieving families that are immune to hardship. Molding oneself to fit this image often comes at a steep, but hidden, cost.

I learned much about Buckminster Fuller!
I've studied Buckminster for for decades, but never knew all that much about his personal life, his psychology and his relationships with others to any extent. This was a magnificent book to enlighten those aspects of Fullers life. and I was quite surprised!

Precise information on the man, the legend.
Very enjoyable biography with all of the details, he didn’t mince words. With all of his exaggerations and truths! I had to listen to this because I worked in one of the buildings he worked in! Great history and nostalgia! I see how he worked with people, not all projects were clean, but RBF had an eye on the future, and I still see things that he predicted! Great Listen!

What a complicated character
The book tells of the accomplishments of a very interesting and brilliant man. Also his personal foibles and many of his 'fake' accomplishments; things he failed to achieve or invent and really did not. His personal life is another rather tangled story.
It is a fascinating story and the narrator does an excellent job keeping it going. Kudos to Rob Shapiro. Well done. If this had been recorded by some 'AI' robot it would have been absolutely awful.

You’ll hate to learn once again both that Marx was right and live is the answer.
- [ ] As the book progressed I began more and more to feel that the better title for the book might have been Buckminster Fuller; WHAT AN ASSHOLE! but after the descriptions of his experience with Black Mountain College I realized my own lack of knowledge. Perhaps like a lot of people, I had know next to nothing about Buckminster Fuller other than those experiences at and with BMC. And so I had hypothesized a personality for him myself. The cruelty of his selfless desires to house the world’s suffering populate juxtaposed with his modern disciples hurt again and again. This pain was worsened by the book’s continual factual mistakes, especially the ones that were self-contradictory within its own pages. Some terrible inaccuracies about CHARAS in NYC rubbed salt in these wounds. Yet the description of the chemists who called a new molecule Buckminster Fullerine lead me in another direction. Going back to the beginning of the man and the book I was compelled to ask what it was the BF had and maintained through what he was smart enough to know were his own lies and mistakes. Was it the same thing that made his woke lying mess of a life speak to these chemists beyond his own death? It was. I have concluded that what BF brought to science was nothing less than love, his own flawed sometimes painful love of his fellow humanity which he called the world, the whole earth, or sometimes he hid it behind other terms like efficiency or even beauty. Buckminster Fuller has not been duplicated even by those who have worked for fuse science and art because they lack that most ephemeral Fullerene: LOVE. Read this book. I think you may agree. If so, it may change you and I think BF would have found that the best memorial, though doubtless he would have been grumpy about it.

Thorough Look at Influential Influencer
I was back and forth about whether I liked this book. At times it was a chore to read/listen to (I have the print version too). It's an exhaustive look at Buckminster Fuller, at times almost overwhelming in personal detail. But overall, I really liked the book and the in-depth examination of a decidedly complicated individual, who was a mix of showman and innovator. In the end, Bucky's insight and influence are undeniable and worth this careful examination.

A man who deserves to be remembered
An even handed and thorough retelling of the life of R Buckminster Fuller. His story needs to be told to demonstrate that even such a singular man existed. We are in need of more people like this, who possess singular and obstinate visions of the future.

A real slog …
Where was the editor? I often feel those who write biographies try to jam everything they know about a person into their book. This story could have benefited mightily from a good editors eye. Rather a than a simple chronological biography with no emphasis on anything, there could be an exciting story here but it would have to be written that way not as a “here is everything I found out about the guy”. And the narration is terrible. No emotion. Just a guy reading the manuscript with no vested interest. I would think twice before investing your time.
