Historia
“What am I, bologna?” Mary Rodgers (1931-2014) often said. She was referring to being stuck in the middle of a talent sandwich: the daughter of one composer and the mother of another. And not just any composers. Her father was Richard Rodgers, perhaps the greatest American melodist; her son, Adam Guettel, a worthy successor. What that leaves out is Mary herself, also a composer, whose musical Once Upon a Mattress remains one of the rare revivable Broadway hits written by a woman. Shy is the story of how it all happened.

Christine Baranski is perfection. Mary’s story is hilarious, heartbreaking, and admirable. One of the wittiest biographies I’ve “read.”

Historia
The Murders in the Rue Morgue was first published in 1841 in Graham's Magazine and is the first of three stories to center around Dupin, who here explains his theory of "ratiocination", where a precise, logical, and unemotional examination of the facts will lead to the solution of a mystery...no matter how bizarre the conclusion.

I hadn't read this story since I was a teen so it was great to hear Mr. Theis bring it to life. Gruesome in its depiction of murder.

Absolutely fascinating. Lowe's story auditioning and working with Francis Ford Copolla on "The Outsiders," his affairs, his political involvement, alcoholism, rehab, work ethic, long marriage, everything. You don't know Rob Lowe. This terrific autobiography is funny, serious, and so interesting for fans. Great book!

Great Social Commentary
Revisado: 07-10-18
Once again Kevin Theiss does a terrific job narrating a fascinating story. I have never read The Time Machine but I was curious as to why it remains such a classic. It is much more social commentary than it is science fiction although it certainly fits into that genre. I highly recommend this book.

Historia
Rainn Wilson’s memoir about growing up geeky and finally finding his place in comedy, faith, and life. For nine seasons Rainn Wilson played Dwight Schrute, everyone's favorite work nemesis and beet farmer. Viewers of The Office fell in love with the character and grew to love the actor who played him even more. Rainn founded a website and media company, SoulPancake, that eventually became a best-selling book of the same name. He also started a hilarious Twitter feed (sample tweet: “I'm not on Facebook” is the new “I don't even own a TV”).

Hilarious, yet surprisingly serious at times
Revisado: 06-29-18
I love listening to authors read their own autobiographies and Rainn Wilson does not disappoint. After listening to Paul Simon's biography, Wilson restored my faith that most artists have a truly fucked up childhood. Hearing him talk about his experiences in NYC in the 80's brought back horrible memories. So much fun! But what I never would have guessed is how deep his faith is, the faith of the B'hai. He made it sound so cool, with all his talk of love and gooey shit like that. Overall, this is a terrific book.

Historia
Through such hits as "The Sound of Silence", "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Still Crazy After All These Years", and "Graceland", Paul Simon has spoken to us in songs for a half-century about alienation, doubt, resilience, and empathy in ways that have established him as one of the most honored and beloved songwriters in American pop music history. His music has gone beyond the sales charts into our cultural consciousness. He was the first songwriter awarded the Gershwin Prize by the Library of Congress and is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Very enjoyable. I love a lot of Simon's work. The best thing about this biography is how Simon relates his creative process, keeping track of snatches of sentences throughout his life and how the melodies almost always come first.

Tiffany can't avoid being funny: it's just who she is. But The Last Black Unicorn is so much more than a side-splittingly hilarious collection of essays - it's a memoir of the struggles of one woman who came from nothing and nowhere. A woman who was able to achieve her dreams by reveling in her pain and awkwardness, showing the world who she really is, and inspiring others through the power of laughter.

Not Very Funny
Revisado: 01-30-18
I was attracted to this book after seeing Ms. Haddish being interviewed by Trevor Noah. I guess my big problem with the book is there are long stretches that Ms. Haddish is just screaming her story and those sections are just repeating, "This muthafuckah done fuckin' beat the shit out of me and I'm thinking she trippin' cause now I'm gonna beat her muthafuckin' ass." Not my thing when it goes on and on. BUT . . . I still think she must be an incredible person for having survived the terrible emotional and physical violence of her life and succeed like she did.
