Couldn't finish. Horrible narrator, mediocre story

Listened for 5 hrs. One of the worst narrators I've heard. Every 'passage' ends the same, in a breathy exhaust. She doesn't read in a monotone; oh no! She randomly emphasizes words and phrases. Tempo is also random; dragging where there is nothing that needs the calm or attention to warrant the extra time and speeds through most sentences and paragraphs. Kind of like a drag car - speeds up, speeds up, cruises briefly, and then the chute pops so she slows down again. Frankly there's one VV that's more in tune with the material than this actor.
The story is merely ok. The lead female was wholly unlikeable so I didn't feel like sticking around past chapter 20 to see if/how she was redeemed. Totally sick of the 'assertive female' trope who takes such an instant, irrational, and over the top hatred of the lead male that she wants to scratch his eyes out. This isn't Elizabeth Bennett; this is Kitty with a bad attitude.
I liked the male lead but not enough to give up 8 more hours of my life.

Rare that I love both the male and female main characters but this is one of those books. Cried a few times about McAlistair's background and his vulnerability during his confession at the end. A couple overdone cliches I hate in romance novels are 1) the 'plucky and assertive' woman because they're often written so badly. Normally they just 'announce their presence with authority' (h/t Bull Durham) and resort to physical violence and verbal abuse toward the male lead whenever they perceive they've been thwarted or don't get their way. 2) these overblown/under-mature female characters spend chapters and chapters acting out of spite based on mis-perceptions. Evie a.l.m.o.s.t went there a couple times but this writer handled her very well having her stop, think beyond herself, and also take in advice from others. The narrator is awesome! She handles so many distinct voices that I was able to lose myself in the story and not have to guess who was speaking. Highly recommend this book.

Really enjoyed the 1st book and Edmund character from there. But 3 hrs into this book I hate, I mean really hate, the Anna character. She was set up with description of being a forceful personality but that doesn't do her justice. She's needlessly obtuse, childish, vindictive (for no reason) and mean-spirited. Although I'm not finished, I can't imagine any sequence of events that can get her from the person she is now to someone I actually want Edmund to love or believe he would love. Nor would I believe she can make such substantial growth to become a character I don't want to b! slap. If I met Anna at a ball she'd receive the cut direct. Avoid this book.

I selected this book because it was free and I like clean, non-Christian, period romance. That it's narrated by Justine Eyre is a bonus - she does multiple, male and female, voices so well it's a pleasure to not have to guess which character is speaking. I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this book as it did not start off well; it started as just one more plucky airy-fairy girl that I prepared for the worn out plot crutch of 'meet the guy, whine about the guy/circumstances/confusion/fear of commitment, make brain-dead assumptions about the guy, and then marry the guy.' The author 'matured' Amelie well and in a realistic manner. This book is worth the listen.

Enjoyed the lead characters in all 3 books in this series who were realistic in their 'romantic intelligence.' I'm sooo beyond tired of characters who are whiny children or the plot crutch of characters who are supposed to be intelligent but then make all sorts of stupid assumptions to be able to get that chapter 20 break-up for the chapter 28 make-up. These leads feel the attraction, express the attraction, and move forward to the happy conclusion. I did not care for the narrator. Justine Eyre read book 1 and 2 and I purchased this without checking who the reader is. Overly dramatic and inflection on the wrong words. Actually about on par with some of the VV narration.

New to this author but I prefer non-Christian clean historical romance and love Justine Eyre's readings so decided to give this series a try. Really enjoyed each story but this was my favorite. I really enjoyed Duncan as a character and cried at the end. After as many romance novels as I've listened to the characters and storylines tend to blend until there are few memorable characters. It's rare for me to care about any character enough to cry or even remember them an hour after finishing the 'read'. I recommend this story.

I prefer non-Christian clean historical romance so I really wanted to like these books but did not. I listen to a lot of VV books so am not against it per se but this voice needs better training as it had more than the usual amount of mispronounced words and odd phrasing and inflection. Book 1 opens with author asking people to cut her some slack for any historical inaccuracies. I thought this was weird but basically was left feeling sympathy since people can be so unkind for just the slightest hiccups. That is not the case here. There are so many anachronisms that I couldn't stay in the story. Every 5-10 minutes there was some word or phrase that simply was not used in the time period. Bottom line - I wanted to like them but couldn't even finish the 1st book.

a badly done Pride and Prejudice. heroine was way too whiny for way too long. didn't believe Gregory would make such a bargain - too forced plot twist. best part of reimagining Pride and Prejudice is neither parent was a joke. best part of this audio book was Justine Eyre's read.

I enjoyed every book in the series but the other narrator is so good with multiple voices and accents that each character actually sounded different. This narrator not so much. Not saying she is bad, she's actually quite good. Better where there aren't so many characters to voice.
