Gunflint Burning is a comprehensive account of the dramatic events around the Ham Lake fire of 2007, one of the largest wildfires in Minnesota history. In sharp detail, Cary J. Griffith describes the key events of the fire as they unfold, transporting listeners to the front lines of an epic struggle that was at times heroic, tragic, and sublime.

Written like a textbook or documentary. Cover and title mislead me
Revisado: 12-13-24
The flashy cover and exciting title had be pumped for a harrowing story or stories of survival during a wildfire. Instead, I got a documentary, interspersed with short stories and quotes. There was a lot of overlap in the stories too, often using flat out repetition in explanations of the same event or process.
The audio book could have been 3 hours shorter, and would have been a much easier read, had the process and “legalese” of every firefighter’s role not been repeated 4-5 times as a header to each story. I wanted to hear from the PEOPLE, not from their professional guidebooks.
I’m sure it’s accurate, though. It does document the event and its players well. I’m glad it was written, and did learn some things from it.

Historia
The Roaring Twenties—the Jazz Age—has been characterized as a time of Gatsby frivolity. But it was also the height of the uniquely American hate group, the Ku Klux Klan. Their domain was not the old Confederacy, but the Heartland and the West. They hated Blacks, Jews, Catholics and immigrants in equal measure, and took radical steps to keep these people from the American promise. And the man who set in motion their takeover of great swaths of America was a charismatic charlatan named D.C. Stephenson.

A Wonderful Historical Piece Told As a Riveting Saga
Revisado: 07-12-24
This book should be required reading for every Hoosier. Timothy Egan does a beautiful job of cramming thousands of historical facts and period-specific attitudes into an enjoyable and exciting story. The parallels between the political issues of 1924 Indiana and 2024 Indiana are made apparent, and should serve as a warning to anyone blindly pulling the Republican lever at the polls this year.

Historia
The crisis of the progressive movement is so evident that nothing less than a fundamental rethinking of its basic assumptions is required. Today's progressives now work for professional organizations more comfortable with the inside game in Washington, DC (and capitols throughout the West), where they are outmatched and outspent by corporate interests. In No Shortcuts, Jane McAlevey argues that progressives can win, but lack the organized power to enact significant change, to outlast their bosses in labor fights, and to hold elected leaders accountable.

I’ll be shoving this book under the nose of every “union leader” I encounter.
The issues described hit so close to home in my own union, that it seems to have been written while speaking directly to us.

Historia
Fierce independence and a leave-me-alone attitude define the modern Libertarian and party. This does not make for good politics, where coordination and national momentum is crucial. This book outlines a practical libertarianism that can coexist with the two other national parties. We can find a common, central philosophy that will capture the drive of an election-winning majority of "We the People".

A Decent Summary of Libertarianism
Revisado: 12-16-21
It’s a quick and simple listen for the moat part.
The taxation chapter is too far in the weeds and confusing.
The author/reader is too self-deprecating. Give yourself some credit, Jim. You put a whole book together and published it. Your reader doesn’t want to hear about how bad it is.

Historia
Of the many battlefields on which U.S. troops and intelligence operatives fought in Afghanistan, one remote corner of the country stands as a microcosm of the American campaign: the Pech and its tributary valleys in Kunar and Nuristan. The area’s rugged, steep terrain and thick forests made it a natural hiding spot for local insurgents and international terrorists alike, and it came to represent both the valor and futility of America’s two-decade-long Afghan war.

I’ve read more exciting war stories. This one is heavy on facts and drags through at some points. It’s heavy on names and events, lite on bias.

Lots of Info, but a bit repetitive
Revisado: 02-24-21
I feel like this book made me a more informed shopper, but it could have been 1/3 as long as it is.
Mr Gordon lays out the pitfalls and pluses of solar, then reiterates most of them, then reframes the arguments and goes over them again.
I get it. Don’t lease. How many times do you need to restate that?
I’m not dismissing the book overall. I’ve taken notes and researched new ideas that the author presented. I found it helpful and informative.

In his monumental work, Das Kapital, Karl Marx (1818-1883) tried to show that capitalism was both inefficient and immoral. His key to explaining capitalism is his labor theory of value, which he developed from ideas of Adam Smith and David Ricardo.

Pretty Biased Take on Marx
Revisado: 01-25-21
This could be summarized as a biography of Marx written by someone that dislikes Marx.
I found myself yelling at my phone on a few occasions when the author would insert a quippy jab or attempt to refute into a passage where he should have simply been explaining Marx’s stance.
Listening to this book was like listening to a debate between the author, who has us as his audience, and Marx, who isn’t even present to defend himself.
The work also comes across as dated in it’s insistence that corporate monopolies and centralization have been reducing since Marx’s time. That pendulum has clearly swung back towards the elitist ownership class in recent decades.

A great story well read
Revisado: 12-26-20
The action is intense. The emotions are real. I’d imagine that a lot of these situations are recollections with names changed more-so then they are fiction. The reader is transported right into the story. The characters on the ground, and back in Washington, are clearly representations of actual people.
The reading performance by Mr Graybill was superb. The voices and accents he portrays help paint a picture of each character. His pace and tone pass on excitement and fear as well as comedy and relief.
I’ll recommend this audiobook to anyone who asks. It was one of my favorites in recent memory.

Historia
Participating in the economy is a part of everyday life; yet much of what is commonly accepted as fact is wrong. Keynesian schoolteachers and the liberal media have filled the world with politically correct errors that myth-busting professor Robert Murphy sets straight. Murphy explains hot topics like outsourcing (why it's good for Americans) and zoning restrictions (why they're not). Just like the other books in the P.I.G. series, The Politically Incorrect Guide to Capitalism pulls no punches.

Wow. . . This is concerning
Revisado: 12-10-20
I’ll start with something nice. This book was well read. The narrator clearly and concisely spouted off the complete and utter bunk that was written before him.
The content of this book presents a wonderful microcosm of the political/social/economic divides that exist in America today. Authors and speakers such as Dr Murphy here are perpetuating a false narrative based on flippant analogies that do not hold up to logical scrutiny. Lazy consumers of this narrative don’t bother to apply logical scrutiny, and accept this bs as fact. It makes me sad as an American.
This book tries to paint a picture where anything that government or labor unions does is negative. It goes so far as to advocate AGAINST child labor laws, anti-discrimination laws, collective bargaining, and equal pay for women. The book uses wonderfully-insightful examples such as “If it were legal in the US to send your 8yo to work instead of school, you wouldn’t do it anyway. There’s no need for a law.” Also, “You should hire a receptionist based upon a mix of her attractiveness and efficiency.”
Seriously.
The title here is not fitting. This book is not just “Politically Incorrect.” It’s actually “Offensively Incorrect.”
I’d suggest that a reasonable person may wish to read it, as I did, do get a nice layout of every far-right racist talking point that they may encounter in social media political debates this week. The book is full of oft-repeated cliches. Make some notes, prep your responses using actual facts and examples, and hit the web. You’ll see all these same ridiculous points laid out in thousands of comments sections across all platforms. Happy hunting!

Great Story. . . I hope it’s not true
Revisado: 01-15-18
The author does a great job of telling the story of the Trump campaign and early presidency. The narrator reads it wonderfully.
I want to see the quotes verified and hear the tapes of interviews released. . . but the book is entertaining and plausible even without the hard evidence.
