Historia
When Margaret's fiancé, John, is hospitalized for depression in 1960s London, she faces a choice: carry on with their plans despite what she now knows of his condition, or back away from the suffering it may bring her. She decides to marry him. Imagine Me Gone is the unforgettable story of what unfolds from this act of love and faith. At the heart of it is their eldest son, Michael, a brilliant, anxious music fanatic who makes sense of the world through parody.

Incredibly accurate
Revisado: 12-06-24
I was Completely blown away by the accuracy of Haslett’s portrait of clinical depression and anxiety. It was literally frightening to be drawn into that world.
That said, there seemed to be an implication that psychoactive medications to treat Depression and anxiety are bad. I totally agree that benzodiazepines can be addictive and habituate, therefore being potentially dangerous, And, medications do not work for everyone; however, for many, psychoactive medications can be lifesaving.
Interesting read!

>"What are you reading?" That's the question Will Schwalbe asks his mother, Mary Anne, as they sit in the waiting room of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. In 2007, Mary Anne returned from a humanitarian trip to Pakistan and Afghanistan suffering from what her doctors believed was a rare type of hepatitis. Months later she was diagnosed with a form of advanced pancreatic cancer, which is almost always fatal, often in six months or less. This is the inspiring true story of a son and his mother.

Not interesting to me
Revisado: 12-01-24
The story of his mother’s illness and passing seemed to be a shrine to her. There is much book “name dropping”. It sounds like she was a wonderful person; however, the picture painted of her was too “perfect” for me.

Historia
The second novel by Donna Tartt, best-selling author of The Goldfinch (winner of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize), The Little Friend is a grandly ambitious and utterly riveting novel of childhood, innocence, and evil. The setting is Alexandria, Mississippi, where one Mother’s Day a little boy named Robin Cleve Dufresnes was found hanging from a tree in his parents’ yard. Twelve years later Robin’s murder is still unsolved. So Robin’s sister Harriet - unnervingly bright and insufferably determined - sets out to unmask his killer.

Historia
Alma Cruz, the celebrated writer at the heart of The Cemetery of Untold Stories, doesn’t want to end up like her friend, a novelist who fought so long and hard to finish a book that it threatened her sanity. So when Alma inherits a small plot of land in the Dominican Republic, her homeland, she has the beautiful idea of turning it into a place to bury her untold stories—literally. She creates a graveyard for the manuscript drafts and revisions, and the characters whose lives she tried and failed to bring to life and who still haunt her.

Historia
Sam Pickett never expected to settle in this dried-up shell of a town on the western edge of the world. He’s come here to hide from the violence and madness that have shattered his life, but what he finds is what he least expects. It seems that every inhabitant of this forgotten outpost has a story, a reason for taking a detour to this place—or a reason for staying.

What goes around comes around
Revisado: 01-09-24
Billy Summers is kind of a karma enforcer, with his “code” to only assassinate “bad people.” His backstory is compelling, from childhood through the war in Iraq to his career as a paid assassin. But the story would lose momentum without the addition of a young woman - won’t say more to avoid spoiling the book.
The reader is excellent. (Seems like all of King’s books employ superb readers.). Definitely enhances the listening experience.
A great read!

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Imagination!
Revisado: 01-03-24
I never quite know what to expect when I start to read /listen to a Stephen King novel. I don’t care for gore, but I do love suspense and a good story. This book has that and more. The main character is not perfect, but he is like-able and believable.
The story is an amalgamation of fairytales (not the sanitized versions, but the grim versions.) King crafts the story skillfully, with just the right amount of foreshadowing. And he can sure write - The descriptions and similes brought clear visual pictures to mind, some beautiful, (and some you might wish to forget).
The narrator is excellent - his characters’ voices are distinct and instantly recognizable.
In short, this book is a good ride.

Historia
In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

Fascinating look at how people in power might delude themselves into justifying evil.
Revisado: 12-26-23
Suspenseful and insightful, King’s novel gives us a glimpse of an unlikely (or is it?) world in which people in power justify evil.
The diverse child heroes in this novel are both amazing and completely lovable. King weaves this tale in his usual way, building suspense carefully without divulging the ending, (which I loved!) it was difficult to stop listening.
A huge shout out to this reader, who is excellent! His characters have authentic voices, instantly identifiable and completely believable.
While there is always violence in a King novel, I wasn’t completely grossed out as I sometimes am, perhaps because of the resilience and courage of the characters. I’d add more, but it would include spoilers.
Enjoy the listen/read!
