The story of the REAL Norse

An excellent, detailed, well-documented history of the Vikings and the Norse more broadly. Dispels a lot of the myths and nonsense peddled by Hollywood. Price cites the documentary and archeological evidence for his assertions without becoming tedious or boring. Does a great job of highlighting lesser known aspects of the Viking age, including their eastward voyages and the socioeconomic factors that drove the beginning of the great raids. Did you know that the Viking era was the golden age of the Scandinavian sheep farmer? Well, it was, and if you listen to this book, you'll know why. And the excellent narration makes it a thoroughly engaging and enjoyable experience.

This is a great account of the lead-up to the Normandy invasion that really opens up the personalities on the German side and how those personalities drove the outcome.

I think John Keegan is a very good historian. I *think* that, but I don't *know* it. I *know* that he is in more desperate need of an editor than any historian I've ever read. Only Keegan would start a book entitled "Six Armies in Normandy" with a reminiscence of over an hour about his own childhood (which at least happened during World War II and in Europe), followed by half a chapter of utterly pointless rambling about the travels from California to Washington, DC of a general who never set foot in Normandy during World War II and whose only discerninible connection to the region was that he had served a staff officer in northern France during World War I. I thought "The Face of Battle" was tedious, rambling, and in desperate need of editorial assistance (and believe me, the chapters I managed to endure were all of those things), but "Six Armies in Normandy" is even worse. I'm sure Keegan makes a lot of great points, but he seems relentlessly determined to take five times longer than necessary to even begin to make any of them.

Tedious and rambling prose can sometimes be salvaged by evocative reading by a skilled performer. That is the diametrical opposite of what happened here. One gets the sense that this narrator could have made even the most engaging and exciting writing deadly dull with his monotonous, "bored aristocrat discharging an unpleasant duty" style of narration. Between the awful performance and Keegan's grindingly pointless prose, the first two chapters are a soporific storm of somnolence. If you're chronically unable to sleep, or profoundly troubled by actually having a pulse, I highly recommend this title, as I'm sure it will help. Otherwise, pass it by.

This is a GREAT story about human beings living through a collision of cultures inside the pressure cooker of political intrigue and the prelude to civil war. The characters are well developed and three dimensional, with no cardboard caricatures. The twists and turns of the politics occasionally got a little confusing, but the narrative and the dialog are so well written that the story held my interest until the confusion resolved. While there are a few technical things Clavell got wrong about ships, he clearly put a lot of work into getting the cultures right. This was a thoroughly enjoyable listen.

I had heard of this story for years but never knew more than broad outlined of it. I have to say, it's one of the best classic horror novels I've ever read/ heard. And the narration in this version is spot on, adding to the depth of the story without ever getting in the way. Very, very well done!

Another good book ruined by bad narration

Clark's exposition of Prussian history is good, particularly in the depth he gives on the origins and early decades of the story. From the time of Bismarck and the foundation of the German Empire, though, it feels like he's in a hurry to wrap things up; the level of detail falls off markedly, and the analysis of the First World War is all but nonexistent.

The real problem with this title, though, is Shaun Grindell's narration. It's just sloppy. While his native accent can be distracting at times (e.g., his pronunciation of Immanuel Kant), his attempts at a German accent (e.g., when he tries to sound German in his pronunciation of Wartburg) are even more aggravating.

The much bigger issue, however, is the number of words that he simply mispronounces and/or stumbles over. If you're going to narrate an audiobook that deals heavily with Prussian militarism, it behooves you to learn the correct pronunciation of words like adjutant. If you're the editor of ANY audiobook, it is your responsibility to make sure the narrator gets the pronunciations right and that passages with verbal stumbles are re-recorded and corrected. Sadly, both the narrator and the editor failed in those responsibilities here. The result was that I often had to go back and listen to a sentence a couple of times in the attempt to discern what the author intended. This is the second time I've had this experience with books read by Mr. Grindell, and I'll make it a point to avoid books read by him in the future.

Good Book, Awful Narration

Holland's history of the Battle of Britain is interesting, lucid, and thought-provoking, particularly his argument that the battle actually began as early as September 1939 rather than in June 1940. I wish he had gone more deeply into the events of the battle itself (at times it felt like he provided more depth on the campaign in France than he did on the air war over England), but all in all is a good, accessible history with a compelling argument to make.

The problem with this audiobook is the performance. It could charitably be described as bloody awful. The narrator has an odd combination of upspeak, diction, and pauses in the middle of sentences that make it seem as if every single sentence is the most dramatic and momentous thing he has ever read. While those vocal techniques can be great tools for highlighting actually momentous sentences, when they're used on every single sentence, they come off as silly and contrived and make it difficult to pick out what the actual momentous statements are.

As annoying as that odd rhythm is, after about ten chapters I was able to mostly ignore it. What I couldn't ignore was the narrator's ATROCIOUS mispronunciation of words and names that figured heavily in the text. Some of the more egregious examples:

• Guderian
• altimeter
• Dornier
• Curtis
• Adjutant
• oberst and oberleutnant
• Doenitz

Given that all of these words and names are used dozens of times in a book about German aviation in World War II, there's simply no excuse for this. It was extremely distracting and had an major negative impact on my enjoyment of the book. I will definitely think twice before purchasing another audiobook read by this narrator.

A fitting final volume to a powerful and incredibly well-written trilogy. Atkinson is honest about both the heroism and the hubris, the valor and the venality of the men and women who shaped, and were in turn shaped by, the war in Europe. An essential history of the most impactful single event in human history.

A very well-written and well-researched account that gets past the hysteria and hyperbole of headlines about the crack wars to paint vivid portraits of the real human beings involved. The performance is delivered with energy and feeling without becoming maudlin or melodramatic. Highly recommended.
