life's too short for bad books
Revisado: 02-26-25
I dnf this book. I could get over the crappy AI narrator but it just isn't written well. The storyline sounded good and maybe it would've gotten there eventually but I have better things to do and better books to read.

Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

This book was fabulous and I can't wait to start the next!
*SPOILER ALERT*
My only criticism is at the end when their mom dies. I mean really? None of them even liked her and their reactions just seemed a little much.

The main character was a DB
Revisado: 08-21-24
I didn't like the main character. I tried to ignore his crushing on a married woman who is trying to find her missing daughter. It was when he said that he was above making his own bed that I gave up though. I mean really? The writing just wasn't very good. Dialogue that should've been smooth and comfortable came across as stilted and awkward. The AI reading probably didn't help any but the main problem was the writing.

Disappointed
Revisado: 04-15-24
I was disappointed with the narration in general but specifically every time she said the word "poem" it somehow came out sounding like "porn". I don't even know how that happens in the first place but surely someone in editing should've caught this right? I mean the word is used like 20 times.
The story as a whole was ok but there were several times that her being a Christian was brought up and it gets way too preachy for way too long. A book about FBI profilers isn't the place for that. Mentioning her chosen religion is fine but proselytizing isn't helping the book at all.

I loved this book. I'm still impatiently awaiting Doors of Stone but this helped. It also reminded me why I love his writing and why it's worth waiting a decade for some books. Bast is a fascinating character and I really enjoyed getting to know him better.

What a life!
Revisado: 09-19-23
I've been a fan of Sinead since I was like 13 years old. I'm still grieving her death but decided to listen to her book anyways. I cried again and again to hear of all of her struggles and hardships. I laughed again and again at her stories of getting into trouble and her hatred of rockabilly. This book was cathartic for me. I hope she's finally with her God.

This book was surprisingly good! The characters were likeable, occasionally funny, always smart. The story line could have ended up feeling far fetched or ridiculous but didn't. Very well done.

So the last 15 minutes or so just felt very rushed. I don't love some of the choices the author made near the end either. Mostly I enjoyed this story but I'm now not sure if I'm going to read any further in this series.

Amazing woman
Revisado: 07-02-23
First off, the author is a close friend of mine. We've been friends since we were teenagers.
I found it very difficult to get through this book because it hurts me to hear all the horrible things she's gone through in her life. Some of them I knew all about prior to this book. Some I knew a little about, but some were completely new to me. I knew many of the people in this story including Rachel's parents and kids. I was even in the room when the youngest was born!
I'm so thankful that Rachel is still with us to tell her story. She's always been a wonderful and caring soul but she has grown into such an amazing person that she betters our world just by existing in it. She truly is an inspiration.
Now the narrator. I do not know her and I hope to never hear her voice again. She somehow managed to make Rachel sound like an annoying and stupid kid through the entire book. (Yeah obviously Rachel did a lot of dumb things throughout her life but I promise you she's quite intelligent!) The narrator didn't ruin the book completely or anything but I felt she detracted rather than enhanced the story.
Not many people can share their lives the way Rachel has here in Against Such Things. I'm definitely looking forward to her next book.

Historia
Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th-century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trades she uses to get by - palm readings, zars, and a mysterious gift for healing - are all tricks, both the means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles and a reliable way to survive. But when Nahri accidentally summons Dara, an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior, to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to reconsider her beliefs.

I'm so glad there are two more books in this series. A few parts dragged a bit but all in all a wonderful start to what promises to be an amazing story. The narration was very good also.
