Loved it. Loved everything about it. I laughed out loud. Giggled. Teared up. Was caught off guard. Loved the depth of the characters. The narrator did them justice.

Historia
For Francisco Cantú, the border is in the blood: His mother, a park ranger and daughter of a Mexican immigrant, raised him in the scrublands of the Southwest. Driven to understand the hard realities of the landscape he loves, Cantú joins the Border Patrol. He and his partners learn to track other humans under blistering sun and through frigid nights. They haul in the dead and deliver to detention those they find alive. Plagued by a growing awareness of his complicity in a dehumanizing enterprise, he abandons the patrol for civilian life.

A personal memoir
Revisado: 01-15-25
Never sure where it was going … and then it ended. Philosophizing throughout over immigration, border policy and ethics, human toll, Read in a halting cadence and seemed as if the writer was suffering in a depression, understandably so.

Historia
After being rescued as infants from a sinking ocean liner in 1914, Marian and Jamie Graves are raised by their dissolute uncle in Missoula, Montana. There—after encountering a pair of barnstorming pilots passing through town in beat-up biplanes—Marian commences her lifelong love affair with flight. At fourteen she drops out of school and finds an unexpected and dangerous patron in a wealthy bootlegger who provides a plane and subsidizes her lessons, an arrangement that will haunt her for the rest of her life, even as it allows her to fulfill her destiny: circumnavigating the globe.

Complex characters
Revisado: 09-05-24
I enjoy complex characters with definite character development along with historical fiction. It was a little long but in the end I’m glad I stuck with it. I was more drawn to the personalities of the past. I couldn’t relate to or sympathize with the parallel present day characters of the movie industry but ultimately a thoughtful decision prevailed. You’ll have to finish the book to understand what I mean.

This psychologist should not be in practice
Revisado: 09-26-22
I spent the first 7/8’s of the book not liking “Margaux” because of her obvious, bad, unethical, choices regarding her clients. But I pushed on and found out at the end….”oh, that’s why.” Still didn’t like her.

Entertaining enough
Revisado: 09-10-22
Stays true to the character of Holmes being a brilliant, narcissistic egomaniac. The “scuffles”, of which there are many, were a little distracting with all the huffing and puffing. Otherwise it seemed to keep me listening. Audio stories with multiple characters voiced by multiple actors can be so much more engaging than a single narrator. Though I have listened to many books with wonderful narrators.

Sugary Sweet
Revisado: 08-09-22
No irony in the title. They are children of fortune. Everyone loves everyone. Everything turns out perfectly for everyone. I finished the story just in case a meteor fell on all of them gathered at the end. But no. It felt like a reading of old fashioned letter writing where letters contained everything from the weather to who came to visit to how the crops are doing. Would have been more interesting to me had the story started with Beatrix, her loveless marriage and Edward’s unrequited love.

Almost put it down
Revisado: 02-12-22
…but I was hoping to find one redeeming element to make this worth the time spent listening. Life is not all rainbows and historical context must be considered, but to have one generation after another be filled with so much violence, hatred, misogyny, abuse and evil mainly, though not solely, at the hands of one man made for a depressing read.

Historia
Olive Oatman isn’t a household name, but a distinct feature on her face has made her infamous for the worst reasons. She is the girl with the blue tattoo. The story behind the distinctive tattoo is the stuff of legends. Some believed it was placed on her face during her captivity, following the brutal murders of her family members and the kidnapping of her and her sister. Others believe it was placed on her after her return.

Short and sweet.
Revisado: 04-25-21
This writing gives weight to the facts known about the Oatmans through an LA Times interview after her return to white society and the Stratton book that propelled Olives story to speaking tours and continued fame. Any suppositions are drawn from what is known about how people lived at that time, the Mormon migration west, and the surviving brother. I would have liked to know more about the Mojave people and what is known about their culture, particularly because it mentions Mojave researchers dispute the Stratton version of the story. Otherwise not much more can be added without turning it into historical fiction.
