Historia
Garath was a gamer that spent his time adventuring in magical worlds behind a keyboard. He was exploring one of those very worlds when the planet that he actually inhabited became suddenly, and drastically more interesting. The ability to shapeshift into a house cat or summon a demon to serve him were things that were only possible in video games and epic fantasy novels, until they weren't. He may not have had the luxury of a controller or mouse to explore his new abilities, but Garath's dream came true when Earth was fundamentally altered.

A Good Start to a Series
Revisado: 04-24-20
This book was given to me for free at my request and I am providing this voluntary review.
I'll admit at the onset that I am a big fan of LitRPGs in general. While not the best LitRPG I have ever read, it is certainly not a bad one.
Like some other reviewers have noted, the depth was a little shallow, with less of the book being spent on character development and the majority being spent on the action. Given the initial descriptions of several of the characters, I think I would have enjoyed hearing a bit more of their stories and their motivations. Action-wise, it does not fall short on expectations.
Overall, the book felt a little incomplete. The end wraps up a bit quickly and while the story touches on some topics that grabbed my attention (who/what changed the world and why, consequences of certain abilities, the dragons, etc.), they fell a bit off to the side in favor of more action. That being said, I would very much like to see another book in this series that builds on and adds more depth to the world described in this book. It has a lot of potential and I want to hear more of Garath's story.

A Grab Bag of Sub-Genres and Themes
Revisado: 09-01-19
This book was given to me for free at my request and I am providing this voluntary review.
I will be honest from the get-go - I did not find this book to be an enjoyable read. Notable themes include: Vampires, Neo-nazis, old gods, demonic rituals, power fantasy, sex-fantasy, and rape fantasy. As other reviews have mentioned, I also felt the main character was oversexualized. Sex was not just a part of the book - it felt shoehorned in at every opportunity. Rape was a recurring sub-goal of the villains encountered, to the point where it became a predictable part of the story.
For a supposed litrpg book I felt like there was less focus on the litrpg side of things. Though the story itself supposedly occurred within an rpg-type game, it was mostly used as a prop to allow the writer to include as many sci-fi and fantasy sub-genres as they could into a series and still have it make 'some' sense.
I can't say that I will be reading any other books by this author.

Historia
The Containment Zone is a 500-mile radius surrounded by mountains and closed in by gates. No one can leave, and anyone who tries will die. Within are lawless bandits, corrupt soldiers, and once-human greyskins that hunt down people to spread the virus. Some say the Containment Zone is where the greyskin virus originated. Others say the people inside are little more than lab rats being studied by the nefarious Screven government. When 12-year-old Skylar and her father, Liam, are caught trying to escape, they are taken to Vulture Hill, a government prison camp no one has ever left alive.

Zombies with a Twist
Revisado: 06-15-19
This book was given to me for free at my request and I am providing this voluntary review.
This book had an interesting take on the zombie genre. The story is told from two perspectives - a father and a daughter doing their best to hide their relation from a prison warden while also doing their best to help each other escape. Nearly the entire book takes place within a death-camp prison with a focus on escaping, with less of an emphasis on zombies (though they are very much a significant part of the plot). The plot was more or less on rails throughout (the ending itself was predictable), but there were enough twists and revelations throughout to keep me interested through to the end. Though the book is part of a series, the book itself felt complete, while still leaving the main characters with a long journey ahead.
As another review mentioned, the narrator's 's' were a bit hard on the ears. Lowering the treble setting on my car audio made it less noticeable.

An Unnerving Plot Premise
Revisado: 05-04-19
This book was given to me for free at my request and I am providing this voluntary review.
Though this book is definitely in the Young Adult/Post-Apocalyptic genre, I couldn't help but find myself having feelings of dread comparable to that of a horror novel while listening to this book. The premise itself is chilling and comes so close to the realm of reality considering the recent resurgence in deadly diseases in the modern world. The story does a great job of giving you hope that the main character and those they care for will make it out alright. At the same time it will also keep you in a state of unease, knowing that one misstep could spell ruin.
My only major critique is that the books, individually, end abruptly and do not feel like complete books on their own. As a trio, the story becomes more cohesive. Overall, this box set was a great listen and I highly recommend it for fans of the genre.

His plans unravel when he's accosted by gangsters, rescued by smugglers, and swept up in the search for an ancient Earth relic. Brace soon realizes he might not live long enough to ever get a taste of the quiet life.

Out of the Frying Pan and Into the Fire
Revisado: 01-03-19
This book was given to me for free at my request and I am providing this voluntary review.
This book is mostly narrated from the main character's point of view. Brace's plan, after being released from prison, is to find a way to pilot a spacecraft in peace. He finds anything but peace in the process. The story begins a little slowly but quickly gains pace as trouble seems to orbit his very existence (despite his initially earnest attempts to keep his head down). From slavers and bounty hunters to aliens and mysterious objects from many millenia ago, this book has a lot crammed into it while keeping a good pace throughout. I recommend giving this book a try.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I am providing this voluntary review.
Overall:
I have to admit that while this book has its moments, I did not find myself enjoying the book as much as I hoped. I had difficulty following in some parts and it made the story feel disjointed to me. That being said, I did finish the book with the last few hours being altogether more interesting to me than the previous 13. If you are into mystery novels within a medieval-era setting, this might be the book for you.
Narration:
One of the voices the narrator used (Nils) seemed a bit mumbly/nasally to me and in a few parts I had difficulty understanding what the character was supposed to be saying. Coincidentally, I have listened to another book narrated by Jenkins and the dialogue was fine. In my opinion, this was not one of the narrator's better performances.

An Unique Fantasy World
Revisado: 10-23-18
This book was given to me for free at my request and I am providing this voluntary review.
In a world where the nobility forgets about the people they are supposed to protect, a Necromancer grants the dead their revenge. The world-building in this book is especially good, with lore being interspersed throughout the main plot. I became especially interested in the demon-lore and their origins, as well as the disbanded order of Paladins. Though I personally felt that the book ended too soon, it did by no means feel incomplete. If you want to read a story about a noble necromancer who unites the dead - not as mindless minions, but as comrades in vengeance, you may very well enjoy this book.

Power Fantasy Sci-Fi at its Best
Revisado: 09-12-18
This book was given to me for free at my request and I am providing this voluntary review.
I enjoyed this book far more than I was expecting, though it is not without its flaws. Although the main character seemed to have a virtually impenetrable 'plot shield', the story kept me interested throughout the course of the book. The trusting but not helpless nature of the main character was well balanced with the power he wields through an AI that will do anything (and I mean anything) to help him survive. Though the AI is 'on his side', the sinister overtones become more and more apparent as the priorities and manipulations of the AI become more apparent (to the reader, not to the characters). Sadly, the book ended on a cliffhanger, leaving behind several dangling plot strings. I will likely be purchasing the omnibus sometime in the future. I recommend buying this book - though be sure to purchase the omnibus if you do.

Gets Better and Better as You Go
Revisado: 08-07-18
This book was given to me for free at my request and I am providing this voluntary review.
Just when you think the characters will finally find peace, it gets worse. When I began listening to this book series, I will admit that I didn't find myself all that interested in the story. Until close to the end of the first book in this set, I found it to be a fairly average perspective on near-future sci-fi, with some moments that made me wonder if listening to the entire series was worth my time (the gratuitous sex scenes weren't my thing). Then the story throws a few curveballs and I was hooked. At the risk of spoilers, I will just say that if you are a fan of dark sci-fi with loads of violence, you will like this series. I recommend this series and look forward to the next book, should the author decide to continue the story.

A Satisfying Conclusion to an Amazing Series
Revisado: 08-07-18
I will start off by saying that going into the series I knew nothing about the author, Drew Hayes. After reading various titles of his and completing this series, I doubt I will ever dislike any of the books he writes, no matter what it is about. I thoroughly enjoyed it all, from beginning to end. This is one series I wish never concluded. That being said, all good things must come to an end. I can only hope for more spin-offs at this point! Keep writing books Drew - I look forward to the next one!
