I was beyond impressed with this book. I think my favorite parts are in the middle of s**t situations the main character can always find a snarky retort. Brilliant dialog and worldbuilding, leaving so much for your imagination to build upon. Took me a little bit to navigate the narrators voices, but once into it they were clear as day.

The story seemed good, but I couldn't get past the narration. The narrator used weird rhythm and inflections, like he didn't like the idea of ending sentences, so he just left them hanging. I found it too distracting to finish. Will get it on Kindle.

Odd Narration

I am a huge fan of the Grimdark Genera. This one is in a class by itself. Gritty reality, stark landscape, and dubious antagonist. No white knights in shining armor. Just a bunch of flawed human beings, set to the scene of a medieval mystery of "Who Dunnit" and "What for". I found the story gripping, exciting, moving and a bit tragic. I loved every moment of it! If you are a fan of Grimdark, and it's master story tellers, add this to your collection. You will not be disappointed.

This was a pretty good book, in my opinion. I really enjoyed the fast-paced, action packed story. I liked the characters and story line. The narration is very well done, too. All in all, I really liked this and would love more from this authoer/narrator duo.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I am providing this voluntary review.

Overall:

I have to admit that while this book has its moments, I did not find myself enjoying the book as much as I hoped. I had difficulty following in some parts and it made the story feel disjointed to me. That being said, I did finish the book with the last few hours being altogether more interesting to me than the previous 13. If you are into mystery novels within a medieval-era setting, this might be the book for you.

Narration:

One of the voices the narrator used (Nils) seemed a bit mumbly/nasally to me and in a few parts I had difficulty understanding what the character was supposed to be saying. Coincidentally, I have listened to another book narrated by Jenkins and the dialogue was fine. In my opinion, this was not one of the narrator's better performances.

Sleuthing - Grimdark Style

Lords of Asylum is a journey into a land of sickness, suffering, brutality, and political intrigue. You can count the number of completely good people on one characters missing fingers. But that doesn't mean there's no one to root for. As the story ratcheted up towards its frenetic conclusion I listened with rapt attention wondering how the main character would get out of situations. That to me is the mark of good grimdark. Where a person can be awful in many ways and yet written well enough to keep interest rather than being a caricature.

The narration was great as well. I'm a sucker for a fantasy tale told in an European accent (even uk) and this fits the bill. I could listen to Paul Jenkins read the dictionary, so it's a blessing to hear him give voice to this story.

I received the audiobook review code for this at my request and have voluntarily left this honest review. This was a great listen and I'd love to revisit the world.

Epic and Brutal

I got this story via audiobook boom and this is my voluntary review. This story was fast paced with so many twists and turns that it was hard to keep up. The many encounters the hero had were well written but they kept me guessing what will happen next. the narrator added to the story. This type of fantasy is not my forte. But the overall story was good.

Looking for a grim fantasy novel with a darkly humorous main character? Look no further! It harkens back to other dark humor greats out there in book and movie form; Grosse Point Blank for some reason comes to mind. Obviously different genres but something about the book reminds me of it. Also great narration. Give the book a try, it’s a series and from a great up and coming author!

Great characters

Alrighty, unfortunately I started off confused and stayed that way until I finally called it quits. I was never sure what Luther's goal was. It moved so fast thru scenes I kept going back to see what I missed and not finding any base.
On the other hand, the narrator had an excellent range in his voices, clear and distinctive. I knew which voice went with who... unfortunatly even with his good narration, I still stayed confused with the story.
This audio was given to me free, and I voluntarily gave this review.

Really, Really Fast Paced

I tried three times to like this audiobook but I never could. This book had way too many avenues, too many people were introduced, seems like there were three or four different plots..It was just all too much. I couldn't enjoy this story...I wanted to but just couldn't.
