Historia
A young ship’s officer stands in the sitting room at 221B Baker Street, begging Sherlock Holmes, the great detective, to help recover his sister. “It’s desperation that drove me to your door, Sir. You may not know it but…if you won’t help us, then I fear my sister will die in the hands of this fiend.” Harry Bellamy, Ships Purser on the White Star Line’s passenger ship, SS Cymric, tells the story of a malevolent nobleman who is also the Church Rector of the Parish, Sir Algernon Benedict of Saxlingham Nethergate. “He is the author of innumerable evils upon our poor folk, a ...

Historia
The Mississippi River, known as “America’s River” and Mark Twain are practically synonymous in American culture. The popularity of Twain’s steamboat and steamboat pilot on the ever-changing Mississippi has endured for over a century. A brilliant amalgam of remembrance and reportage, by turns satiric, celebratory, nostalgic, and melancholy, Life on the Mississippi evokes the great river that Mark Twain knew as a boy and young man and the one he revisited as a mature and successful author.

The story was an interesting look at life on the river. It was also interesting how much information a river pilot had to keep in his head.

Historia
Gunter K. Koschorrek was a machine-gunner on the Russian front in WWII. He wrote his illicit diary on any scraps of paper he could lay his hands on. As keeping a diary was strictly forbidden, he sewed the pages into the lining of his thick winter coat and deposited them with his mother on infrequent trips home on leave. The diary went missing, and it was when he was reunited with his daughter in America some 40 years later that it came to light and became Blood Red Snow.

Historia
Our understanding of the American West has moved far beyond pop culture in recent years. The legendary people and events we associate with the Wild West - the last stand at the Alamo, the Battle of Little Bighorn, the exploits of Calamity Jane, the hardships of the Oregon Trail - are even more fascinating once the historical realities have been separated from the myths.

Historia
In 1834, Osborne Russell joined an expedition from Boston, which proceeded to the Rocky Mountains to capitalize on the lucrative salmon and fur trade. Beginning at the age of 20, he detailed the life of a trapper in his journal and recorded his adventures through treacherous terrain, encounters with dangerous wildlife, and confrontations with the Rockies natives of the Rockies. Osbourne would remain there for the next nine years. Journal of a Trapper is his remarkable account as he developed into an experienced trapper and a seasoned mountain man of the Rockies.

Well written first hand account of life in the wilderness
Revisado: 07-26-22
The author does a great job of mixing the every day life if a trapper with just enough detail not to sound scientific. The appendix has a considerable amount of very interesting information expressed in a non scientific manner.

How will artificial intelligence affect crime, war, justice, jobs, society, and our very sense of being human? The rise of AI has the potential to transform our future more than any other technology - and there's nobody better qualified or situated to explore that future than Max Tegmark, an MIT professor who's helped mainstream research on how to keep AI beneficial.

I was anticipating a more in-depth look at AI not as much philosophy. The information was very good and interesting but I would have liked more on the nuts and bolts of AI saving this book for the second level of reading.

Historia
One of the leading physicists of her generation, Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein is also one of fewer than one hundred Black American women to earn a PhD from a department of physics. Her vision of the cosmos is vibrant, buoyantly nontraditional, and grounded in Black and queer feminist lineages. Dr. Prescod-Weinstein urges us to recognize how science, like most fields, is rife with racism, misogyny, and other forms of oppression. She lays out a bold new approach to science and society, beginning with the belief that we all have a fundamental right to know and love the night sky.

Wolf in sheep’s clothing
Revisado: 03-17-22
I selected this title to extend my knowledge of physics. I was not prepared for all of the additional content on social issues. I did however, listen to the entire book to get an idea of PHYSICS for a perspective different from previous books. At times I got the impression that I was being lectured to about my racial and social biases. That was not what I expected or wanted. If the racial and social issues had been toned down I would have enjoyed the book more. With all of that I was still able to take away some physics and a different point of view on the social and racial issues. I hope Chandra finds the peace she is searching for.

Historia
Hitler's forces had pressed in on the small Belgian town in a desperate offensive designed to push back the Allies, starting the Battle of the Bulge. So far, the US soldiers had managed to repel waves of attackers and even a panzer onslaught, but as their ammunition dwindled, the weary paratroopers of the 101st Airborne could only hope for a miracle - a miracle in the form of General George S. Patton and his Third Army.

Battle of the Bulge
Revisado: 09-18-21
The title was a bit misleading as Patton was not a major part of the story. I do think the author did a good job of tracking the events and did give attention to both sides. It is unfortunate that Audible does not have the ability to show graphics as the story progresses. A map would have been helpful.
