When a master-craftsmen dwarf is fired, he threatens retaliation. The rogues-for-hire known as Riyria are commissioned to find and stop him. Traveling to the paradise resort of Tur Del Fur, the two are granted a lavish allowance that, along with the easy job, promises to turn the trip into a vacation. Everything would have been perfect except that the disgruntled employee’s last name is Berling and the target of his wrath is the legendary towers of Drumindor.

A Nice Break
Revisado: 11-15-24
This was my first book after 8 months of reading/listening exclusively to all the works of Guy Gavriel Kay. It was a nice, fun change of pace. Royce and Hadrian on vaction.

Historia
Crispin is a mosaicist, a layer of bright tiles. Still grieving for the family he lost to the plaque, he lives only for his arcane craft. But an imperial summons from Valerius the Trakesian to Sarantium, the most magnificent place in the world, is difficult to resist. In a world half-wild and tangled with magic, a journey to Sarantium means a walk into destiny. Bearing with him a deadly secret and a Queen's seductive promise, guarded only by his own wits and a talisman from an alchemist's treasury, Crispin sets out for the fabled city. Along the way he will encounter a great beast.

The Kay Series I Mostly Recommend To Newbies
Revisado: 09-12-24
All Kay's works are great. I so often preach his praises to my friends, family, and colleagues, and am confronted with "what should I read first." This Series is almost always my recommendation. Kay teaches world history in fantasy in many of his works to the extent that I know of a homeschooling program where his works are part of the curriculum. The voice actor is very good, but the editing has a major flaw of jumping from one character/setting to the next with ZERO pause in-between. It's is like this in both books, and caused me to have to skip back literally hundreds of times.

Historia
Three centuries after the founder of Christianity died on the Cross in an outlying province of the Roman Empire, a new empire was created in his name. Christianity, the faith that Rome had persecuted, was the binding force that enabled Byzantium, the reorganized Roman Empire with its capital in the East, to survive for more than 1100 years, long after the Roman Empire in the West had perished. Byzantium AD 330-1453: The Rise and Fall of the Byzantine Empire is a high-level overview of the rulers and players through the empire's existence.

Virtual Voice Is Impressive
Revisado: 08-28-24
This was my first audiobook narrated by Virtual Voice. I never would have known it wasn't a human, if the reader wasn't told at the beginning. The book is decent for beginners on the subject.

Excellent. Brilliant. One of GGK's best. Historical fantasy at its finest. Why GGK is not more popular is a mystery.

Good, But Far From GGK's Best
Revisado: 05-15-24
It seems this is the most listened to GGK book on Audible based on the number of reviews
It's a decent book, but not even in my top ten of GGK books (I've read or listened to them all). To anyone new to GGK, I'd suggest starting with his more recent books.

That same spring, from the wealthy city-state of Seressa, famous for its canals and lagoon, come two very different people: a young artist traveling to the dangerous east to paint the grand khalif at his request - and possibly to do more - and a fiercely intelligent, angry woman posing as a doctor's wife but sent by Seressa as a spy.

Another GGK Masterpiece
Revisado: 04-22-24
GGK is one of the greatest fantasy writers EVER, but is too often overlooked by fans of fantasy. Look no farther than the number of reviews for his books here on Audible. I just don't understand why? Although this is not even amongst my top five favorite books of GGK, it's better than 95% of the thousands of fantasy books I have read or listened to. If you haven't already, give GGK a listen. It may set you on a course to read everything he has ever published, like happened to me years ago.

Dime Romance Novel
Revisado: 02-22-24
Wow. This was a bad romance novel. Nothing like the other books in the series. Campy. Predictable. Even the historical accuracy was off, compared to his other novels in the series. Cringeworthy romance scenes. Just bad.

Historia
The sun is bloated, diseased, dying perhaps. Beneath its baneful light, Shadrapar, last of all cities, harbours fewer than 100,000 human souls. Built on the ruins of countless civilisations, Shadrapar is a museum, a midden, an asylum, a prison on a world that is ever more alien to humanity. Bearing witness to the desperate struggle for existence between life old and new is Stefan Advani: rebel, outlaw, prisoner, survivor.

Nice. Good book. New weird(ish). Think China M. (but more fun, less political). Strange, but this author has a similar background to mine (law, zoology, sociology). One of the best new weird I've read (or listened to) recently.
