Historia
The second novel by Donna Tartt, best-selling author of The Goldfinch (winner of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize), The Little Friend is a grandly ambitious and utterly riveting novel of childhood, innocence, and evil. The setting is Alexandria, Mississippi, where one Mother’s Day a little boy named Robin Cleve Dufresnes was found hanging from a tree in his parents’ yard. Twelve years later Robin’s murder is still unsolved. So Robin’s sister Harriet - unnervingly bright and insufferably determined - sets out to unmask his killer.

What story?
Revisado: 04-24-25
Have enjoyed Tartt. Goldfinch is delicious. This is flat dull. Unnecessary detail constantly adds nothing to the tale. The snake charming drug dealers are contrived and not believable. And then nothing really happens. Everything has already happened. Narration is just bad.

A hideous story
Revisado: 02-19-25
Not realistic nor authentic. A truly contrived story written to entertain and the most elementary level. Characters were one dimensional cardboard cutouts. Could have been written by artificial intelligence

Historia
It began in a women's club in London on a February afternoon. A discreet advertisement in The Times, addressed to "Those who Appreciate Wistaria and Sunshine..." lures four very different women away from the dismal British weather to San Salvatore, a castle high above a bay on the sunny Italian Riviera. There, the Mediterranean spirit stirs the souls of Mrs Arbuthnot, Mrs Wilkins, Lady Caroline Dester, and Mrs Fisher, and remarkable changes occur.

Got bored. Actually was bored all the way
Revisado: 01-28-25
Yeah it’s glorious in the details, and you feel correctly entrenched in the era. But will anything happen ever?? I bailed with a couple hours left. An entire chapter on where would the husband sleep was the most riveting part of the book.

Historia
Miranda July’s second novel confirms the brilliance of her unique approach to fiction. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy, and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic, and domestic life of a forty-five-year-old female artist, All Fours transcends expectation while excavating our beliefs about life lived as a woman.

Historia
Julia Ames, after a youth marked by upheaval and emotional turbulence, has found herself on the placid plateau of mid-life. But Julia has never navigated the world with the equanimity of her current privileged class. Having nearly derailed herself several times, making desperate bids for the kind of connection that always felt inaccessible to her, she finally feels, at age fifty seven, that she has a firm handle on things. She’s unprepared, though, for what comes next.

A story worth telling
Revisado: 07-31-24
Was very excited for this book. Enjoyed’ the nightingale’ enough and this was on must read lists. And the topic sounded great. The storytelling was meh at best. Pretty uninventive and straightforward. Lots of obvious sadness. Could have been read better, but maybe material was uninspiring for the readers. Didn’t finish

Historia
The Candy House opens with the staggeringly brilliant Bix Bouton, whose company, Mandala, is so successful that he is “one of those tech demi-gods with whom we’re all on a first name basis.” Bix is forty, with four kids, restless, and desperate for a new idea, when he stumbles into a conversation group, mostly Columbia professors, one of whom is experimenting with downloading or “externalizing” memory. Within a decade, Bix’s new technology, “Own Your Unconscious”—which allows you access to every memory you’ve ever had, and to share your memories in exchange for access to the memories of others—has seduced multitudes.

Realized it wasn’t going to come together
Revisado: 04-04-23
I stopped this a little more than halfway as I realized it had spun out of control and not coming back. There wasn’t going to be a celebratory coming together and an “oh I get it” moment. I stopped caring about the characters and what was going to happen to them.

Historia
Corbin College, not quite upstate New York, winter 1959-1960: Ruben Blum, a Jewish historian—but not an historian of the Jews—is co-opted onto a hiring committee to review the application of an exiled Israeli scholar specializing in the Spanish Inquisition. When Benzion Netanyahu shows up for an interview, family unexpectedly in tow, Blum plays the reluctant host to guests who proceed to lay waste to his American complacencies. Mixing fiction with nonfiction, the campus novel with the lecture, The Netanyahus is a wildly inventive comedy of blending, identity, and politics.

Great story
Revisado: 03-13-23
Horrible recording. Annoying sound effects like toilets flushing, knocking and more make it sound like Benny Hill The book is narrated by the author and while he is better than more authors, he doesn’t do voices so you are left wondering who he is speaking. There is also very loud outro and intro music for every chapter and sometimes during chapters. So if you like me, use audible to go to sleep to it will wake you up a lot.

Historia
In the rolling hills of upstate New York, a group of friends and friends-of-friends gathers in a country house to wait out the pandemic. Over the next six months, new friendships and romances will take hold, while old betrayals will emerge, forcing each character to reevaluate whom they love and what matters most. The unlikely cast of characters includes a Russian-born novelist, his Russian-born psychiatrist wife, their precocious child obsessed with K-pop, a struggling Indian American writer, a wildly successful Korean American app developer, a global dandy with three passports.

Some great spots
Revisado: 06-10-22
The story most definitely had brilliant moments But parts that plodded on with no relevance to anyone but the author, tempered the overall enjoyment of the novel. Is the story about friends in quarantine ? Or a vehicle to tell stories of growing up as immigrants in the US? It is both, and each side of these vying stories suffer. I probably will remember it. At my age that is quite an accomplishment.
