Historia
In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

Laura’s storytelling
Revisado: 02-09-25
The switch from working the cherry farm with her daughters to the immersion in her life story and Duke was both natural and jarring. Her voice became so literal and artful, it transcended conversation. It sounded like Laura reading a novel to her daughters.
I relaxed into the style after a while though, and stopped thinking, “I could never tell my daughter my intimate story like that!” I really enjoyed the book then.

Sometimes the dialogue was a bit cliched and too like suburban American conversation. The story was compelling, but I wish there was more history of how fairies and humans came to hate each other.

Reports were not stories. More of a documentary than a novel, with several interludes of good story-telling.

Family and wholesome people, facing difficulties
Revisado: 06-07-24
Rose gradually develops into a woman in the center of her family. One by one characters face challenges and difficulties. Some overcome, some lapse, tragedy strikes, death and disease bring fear and sadness. Rose incorporates it all with grace and strength. I enjoyed her old fashioned family’s ways!
