Historia
Since Stephen Porges first proposed the Polyvagal Theory in 1994, its basic idea-that the level of safety we feel impacts our health and happiness-has radically shifted how researchers and clinicians approach trauma interventions and therapeutic interactions. Yet despite its wide acceptance, most of the writing on the topic has been obscured behind clinical texts and scientific jargon.

So glad I listened
Revisado: 10-08-23
I've been curious about the PVT for a while now and was unable to finish other books about it (even those highly rated). I'm grateful that Stephen & Seth Porges wrote this book. Easy to understand and at times humorous, I found the PVT comprehensible. in addition, I thought the narration was top notch.

Historia
Between 2005 and 2009, the bodies of eight women were discovered around the murky canals and crawfish ponds of Jennings, Louisiana, a bayou town of 10,000 in the Jefferson Davis parish. Law enforcement officials were quick to pursue a serial killer theory, opening a floodgate of media coverage, from CNN to the New York Times. Collectively the victims became known as the "Jeff Davis 8," and their lives, their deaths, and the ongoing investigation reveals a small community's closely guarded secrets.

Murder, mayhem & misery
Revisado: 07-12-22
The story of the Jeff Davis 8 runs as deep & murky as any of the state's swamp! I couldn't stop listening to the accounts of the many townfolk affected by the death of these women & the accusations of those responsible for their demise. I thought the narrator did a great job, particularly in his reenactment of one of the main characters, Frankie Richard. Trad it and try to keep up with the tangled web of relationships that run through these mysterious - and still unsolved - murders.

You know what it’s like to be in pain, to be alone. All those emotions and feelings can be so overwhelming and exhausting. You may often be prone to insecurity, self-pity, feeling tired and confused. Like you are falling in a state of chaos and fear. You feel and absorb not only other people’s emotions, but their physical symptoms, their pain. While talking to others or in a group, while thinking about life, you experience anxiousness, panic attacks, depression… But don’t worry, there’s a name for it - you are an empath: highly sensitive and intuitive.

I found Dyer's book to be filled with information and recommendations that were explained well and very practical. Richards' voice is pleasing and soothing. I felt relaxed but attentive. I'd recommend this book to anyone who feels as though s/he is an empath and is looking for a starting point to understand the trait.

Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.

Not just a book but a documentary.
Revisado: 01-03-20
An interesting look not only into the crime of an Alaskan native, but a look at the culture and beliefs of the Alaskan tribe to whom he belongs. The author, who is also the narrator, brought the book to life by keeping it in the form of a documentary rather than a book. The interviews with witnesses, family members and law enforcement involved with the criminal was fascinating to listen to.

Fear and guilt are two of the greatest challenges we face on the spiritual path - but there is a way to transform these painful feelings into courageous self-acceptance. Here Pema Chödrön presents the five aphorisms for developing fearlessness that were given to Machig Lapdronma, one of Tibetan Buddhism's greatest female teachers. Pema comments on these aphorisms, holds question-and-answer sessions, and leads guided meditations.

Recorded from a live retreat, this book dives into the practice of becoming conmfortable with discomfort. Through her teaching laced with humor and the guided practices, Pema Chodron explains this concept in a way that's understandable even for non-practicing Buddhists. This was my second time listening to the book - the first was while commuting to work, the second was when I treated myself to a "mini-retreat" at home. This book will certainly be referred to again and again for its wisdom and for my personal growth.

Are you tired of feeling f*cked up? If you are, Gary John Bishop has the answer. In this straightforward handbook, he gives you the tools and advice you need to demolish the slag weighing you down and become the truly unf--ked version of yourself. "Wake up to the miracle you are," he directs. "Here's what you've forgotten: You're a f--king miracle of being." It isn't other people that are standing in your way; it isn't even your circumstances that are blocking your ability to thrive. It's yourself and the negative self-talk you keep telling yourself.

Revisado: 03-11-19
I purchased this book because of its high reviews not only of the content but - I'll admit it - the author/narrator's Scottish accent. I loved the book! This, like "The Subtle Art..." by Mark Morford, is like having a really great and true friend give it to you straight. And, luckily, I have a really great and true friend who swears like a sailor (but unfortunately no Scottish accent). I love that you can listen to the chapters in their order or skip around to listen to them. I definitely go to a direct chapter when I need some sage advice. Get this book, and "Get Out of Your Head and into Your Life!"

Historia
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Revisado: 03-06-19
No flufff here, just a stratight-shooting albeit explicit-laden take on life. I've enjoyed the author since I read his blog post of the same name. He keeps it real, and the book is written how I would expect my best friend to speak to me (expletives and all). The narrator is truly the hero of the audible book, with emphasis in all the right places and changing his tone when he portrays another character. The Yoda impersonation is truly a gem! Want to get your sh*t together? Listen to this book - you may find yourself laughing in many places.
