Historia
Barbara Butcher was early in her recovery from alcoholism when she found an unexpected lifeline: a job at the Medical Examiner’s Office in New York City. The second woman ever hired for the role of Death Investigator in Manhattan, she was the first to last more than three months. The work was gritty, demanding, morbid, and sometimes dangerous—and she loved it. In What the Dead Know, she writes with the kind of New York attitude and bravado you might expect from decades in the field, investigating more than 5,500 death scenes, 680 of which were homicides.

Death Investigation - Gritty and Real
Revisado: 07-23-23
I heard the author on a podcast and decided to check out her book. I’m glad I did. This is a well written memoir telling about her gruesome job as a death scene investigator but one that also reveals the personal vulnerability of the author. I listened nonstop and couldn’t wait to hear the next chapter when I was interrupted.
I love the gritty details balanced with the author’s compassion. She was a mess earlier on her life due to her drinking and she was able to turn her life around. The job was her passion but came at a great personal cost.
The author did a great job narrating the book as well.
I highly recommend this book.

Short but so informative
Revisado: 06-05-23
I liked the story format. Kept my attention and got the points across. My only complaint was how short it was. I could have soaked up more wisdom.

Great storytelling
Revisado: 03-30-23
I bought this audible because the author is a Facebook friend of mine. I don’t know him and haven’t really interacted with him. One day I saw him post about how his book had won some award. I didn’t have high expectations but parted with one credit to hear his book.
I was surprised! For better or worse, Clint let his failures and flaws come to light. This made me want to cheer his successes when they arrived.
The famous people keep the stories a bit more interesting but honestly, it is Clint himself as the main character who shines brightest.
My only complaint was how many times he promoted his website. I realize his book is a funnel for his mailing list which will lead to his courses. I’m all for marketing. I have a degree in marketing. But too many promos took away from how good the book was.
Clint and his journey was a fascinating to listen to. I couldn’t wait for my nightly audible session. Well done, Clint.

Sucked in by the title
Revisado: 03-02-23
I loved the idea of this book. What would happen to someone who said yes to opportunities? I am halfway through and want to ask Audible for a refund.
The author has an aggrandized view of herself. She has to be a workaholic, self-centered woman so she can be a “role model” for African Americans, women and her children. Of course, she doesn’t see her most fatal flaw, narcissism.
She talks endlessly about drinking wine, the famous people who are clamoring for her time and attention. She also is very outspoken about her political affiliation. All of these I could roll with if she was likable. But she’s not. Poor her, rich and hanging out with famous people.
One redeeming quality, she does a good job with narrating.

Surprisingly good!
Revisado: 12-01-19
I chose this title as a free Audibles Original selection. I never expect much from these books because, after all, they are free. This book was surprisingly good. The story line was compelling. I never bored of the twists and turns Amaryllis Fox's life took as an undercover agent. I cannot imagine why someone would want to be a secret agent, but Ms. Fox explains how she became involved. The writing was crisp and active. She also did a great job narrating the story. Check it out! You won't be disappointed.
