Historia
Charles Whitman, Jr. was born and raised with his two younger brothers in a nice neighborhood in the suburbs of Lake Worth, Florida. From the outside, the Whitmans appeared to be living the American dream but within the household, lay a much darker reality. Charles Whitman, Sr. made sure his family wanted for nothing, and in return, he demanded perfection. Lethargy or failure were unacceptable and resulted in violence.

The Man Who Stretched Until He Snapped!
Revisado: 05-07-20
Charles Whitman was held to ultra-high standards when he was a child. His abusive father would beat him for not meeting said standards. This created a serious flaw, as he was taught to ignore when he had far too many responsibilities to handle. When he was failing to handle them all, he decided to leave this world doing the only thing he ever thought he was good at, marksmanship. This lead to one of the most gruesome massacres in the 20th century.

A bizarre trip through megalomania
Revisado: 01-16-20
Leonarda's mother didn't approve of the husband she had chosen. After the wedding she cursed the marriage. Having believed in the supernatural all her life, she would find her mother's curse as a scapegoat for the seizures and many miscarriages that seemed to plague her. She sought a consultation from a from a fortune teller to see if she had for sure, she was told that she would outlive all of we children. After she had miscarriages, she blamed the curse. When her son Giuseppe was born and lived she thought she had beaten the curse. She had some successful pregnancies afterwards, but they were sickly children. When she lost two more of her children to illness, she dove into studies of the occult to take control of this curse. It was her obsession with controlling her own fate that drove her to murdering three women.

What drives a man to such hatred of women?
Revisado: 12-18-19
Richard Speck felt betrayed when his mother brought a fraudster home to be his new dad. His stepfather let his mask fall off the moment the new former family moved to a new state. After enduring constant abuse at the hands of his stepfather, he came to the conclusion that his mother was a whore. His reasoning was because she married a man who promised her security for her and her children, which his stepfather reneged upon. This toxic view of his mother soon extended to his view of every woman. This would be his justification for one of the most gruesome mass murders of history.

Don’t Always Trust Those Sweet Older Ladies!
- De POLLY POIZENDEM en 07-23-19
When you set your standards far too high and lack scruples....
Revisado: 06-22-19
Nannie had only one extreme remedy for disappointment or general unhappiness. Murder became the easy button with her husband, children, and other family members. If she believed it would increase their happiness, or (in most cases) her own, she would add rat poison in something sweet she had made for them. It happened frequently, because she set nearly impossible standards on her mates, and bad judgement in choosing them.
Steve White read this book quite well and deserves a medal.
Ryan Green also deserves a medal, for explaining the circle-jerks that led Nannie to her demented decisions very well.

A playbook on how to shift blame from yourself.
Revisado: 05-24-19
Katherine Knight is the prime example of a person who doesn't understand the concept of accountability. She viewed herself as an automaton, and blamed other people as if they were pushing buttons that made her commit violent acts. Mr. Green outdid himself by expaining her mental gymnastics to the masses! He's very good at imagining what goes on in the minds of criminals!

Historia
In July 1965, teenagers Sylvia and Jenny Likens were left in the temporary care of Gertrude Baniszewski, a middle-aged single mother, and her seven children. The Baniszewski household was overrun with children. There were few rules and ample freedom. Sadly, the environment created a dangerous hierarchy of social Darwinism where the strong preyed on the weak. What transpired in the following three months was both riveting and chilling.

Very well-researched but hard to listen to.
Revisado: 05-22-19
This is very hard to listen to because of its subject matter. Ryan Green is very good at imagining what goes through the mind of the victim. You feel her torment the whole way through. This is a well-researched story, with dramatization of what might have happened in Silvia's mind as she was abused. This isn't a fun read, but it accurately emphasizes why we have laws. The whole point of true crime stories is to remember the victims so that we can stop more people from being victimized. This book is a great motivator in that regard!

Ottis Toole and Henry Lee Lucas confessions only screw with your mind.
Revisado: 05-22-19
The research was excellent! Acting was superb! I liked this book. Mr. Green did a good job of getting into the history of Henry Lucas and his short-time cohort Ottis Toole. Again—I cannot say it enough—he also did a good job of imagining the crimes as they had happened from the viewpoints of the criminals! They’d probably confess to assassinating JFK if they thought it would benefit them!

When H. G. Wells first published The War of The Worlds in 1898, the novel quickly became a sci-fi classic. The story of extraterrestrials from Mars invading Earth captured the public’s imagination, inspiring a famed 1938 radio broadcast with Orson Welles, several feature films, countless video games, and a best-selling musical concept album by Jeff Wayne in 1978, among others.

Musical Audio Drama is a Misnomer
Revisado: 05-09-19
The acting was suberb. The music was beautiful! my complaint is the absence of characters singing the actual songs. It's not a true musical drama without singing! It's still a good performance, but I have to dock one star out of principle. Its not a total waste of time to listen to, but if you want the songs that make it Jeff Wane's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds, just buy the actual record album! They should have called this The War of the Worlds: With Instramentals by Jeff Wayne
