Historia
Sixteen-year-old John Grady Cole's grandfather has just died, his parents have permanently separated, and the family ranch, upon which he had placed so many boyish hopes, has been sold. Rootless and increasingly restive, Cole leaves Texas, accompanied by his friend Lacey Rawlins, and begins a journey across the vaquero frontier into the badlands of northern Mexico.

Historia
Author of the best-seller FDR, Jean Edward Smith is a master of the presidential biography. Setting his sights on Dwight D. Eisenhower, Smith delivers a rich account of Eisenhower’s life using previously untapped primary sources. From the military service in WWII that launched his career to the shrewd political decisions that kept America out of wars with the Soviet Union and China, Smith reveals a man who never faltered in his dedication to serving America, whether in times of war or peace.

Good, although biased, biography

An excellent flowing narrative featuring one of history’s great men
Revisado: 07-10-20
Eisenhowers political talent, his incredible self discipline, and his deep and nuanced understanding of world events has been greatly underestimated. During his service is Allied Commander, and has an eight year president during the greatest peacetime expansion of our country‘s economy, or any economy in world history, he was always pleased to be underestimated. It allowed him to avoid critical scrutiny at times and to quietly achieve his goals, which he more often than not did achieve. I very much enjoyed the narrative of this book. The reader is excellent, and the writing style fluent and entertaining. I highly recommend this book.

Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

Chernow may have even surpassed his own masterpiece, Hamilton. Read it; enjoy a flowing narrative about an imperfect but good man who rose on a trajectory and to heights equal to Lincoln’s.

Historia
Author Margaret Coit's Pulitzer Prize winning biography of John C. Calhoun is a towering accomplishment in the writing of American history, powerful in the fullest sense of the word. This is no bland recital of dates and events. It is a searing, blinding, cascading roller coaster of emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and above all, human, history.

What made the experience of listening to John C. Calhoun: American Portrait the most enjoyable?
I knew little of John C. Calhoun and only had a superficial understanding of the old deep antebellum South apart from the lone issue of slavery. I found the subject extremely interesting and exotic. This is an excellent personal and cultural history. The writing style, which at first strikes one as archaic, takes on a life and character of its own and adds greatly to the experience. One of the finest political biographies I have encountered in years.

Historia
First published in 1952, Witness came on the heals of America's trial of the century, in which Whittaker Chambers accused Alger Hiss, a full-standing member of the political establishment, of spying for the Soviet Union. In this penetrating philosophical memoir, Chambers recounts the famous case as well as his own experiences as a Communist agent in the United States, his later renunciation of communism, and his conversion to Christianity.

This book is worth listening to for the quality of the prose alone. The depth of its narrative is equal to Darkness at Noon. Chambers' character is marked by great courage and decency.
