Historia
Cleo Jaffray was an American. A war in Europe had nothing to do with her. She told herself that right up until the man she loved went missing in Poland and Cleo was forced to turn to the only person who might be able to help—her aunt Daisy, the US Minister to Norway. Daisy Harriman has never shied away from a challenge, be it canvassing for women’s suffrage or driving Red Cross ambulances in WWI, so as only the second woman ambassador, she is determined to prove the naysayers wrong and succeed in her post.

Good read about unappreciated woman diplomat
Revisado: 03-17-25
Well researched fiction highlights the real accomplishments of American diplomat Daisy Harriman. So often this book type gets bogged down in pacing or irrelevant sex, but neither occurs here.

Disappointing for a fan of the series
Revisado: 01-25-25
I have thoroughly enjoyed this Bruno Chief of Police series from Martin Walker and always look forward to the next book. This latest is disappointing. There is almost no mystery here The characters are cardboard. The plot is obscure. There is a great deal of WWII history centered on France's experience. In fact, this is more history than novel. I found the history interesting and Walker's thoughts on how Europeans today could/should/do view their relationship is enlightening. So, I stuck with it. But, it is NOT the mystery novel I expect from this author & this series. So, money misspent. My recommendation is that you read the series in order, beginning with Bruno, Chief of Police/Death in the Dordogne. Enjoy the previous books and pass on this one.

Silly book
Revisado: 01-07-25
This reads like a first draft of an inexperienced author. It needs editing in regards to story line, plot, and characters, Get this, the amateur detective is invited to sit in on police interrogation and even shares her notes with the police. I know it's a cozy, but that is ridiculous. The characters are stereotypical, lacking personality. The virtual voice - computer - is creepy. There is no variation for character and are no pauses at appropriate times. No breath so just a droning computer. If the author is serious about the work, get an editor.

Revisado: 12-27-24
Wonderful story. Best of Craig Johnson’s work. Reminds me of the early Longmire books … solid characters, credible plot, mystery upon mystery upon mystery. Fast paced, as befits a novella & the narrative. Then add Guidel’s excellent narration. Saving this in my library to enjoy again some day.

Historia
As dusk falls, a young man staggers through a park, far from home, bleeding from a stab wound. He dies where he falls, cradled by a stranger, a woman's name on his lips in his last seconds of life. Detective Manon Bradshaw handles only cold cases. Five months pregnant, in pursuit of a work-life balance rather than romantic love, she's focused on being a good mother to her two children: her adopted 12-year-old son, Fly Dent, and the new baby.

mind-numbing
Revisado: 06-03-24
Thank goodness this was a "deal" & not full price. I usually hang in and finish books even when they are poorly done. Sometimes the writing redeems itself . Not this one ... finally had to give up. The constant imaginary head conversations were just mind numbing. All the characters sounded the same with this narration.

not an Inspector Rutledge novel
Revisado: 03-23-24
Stand alone novel by Charles Todd. The twists & turns of an Inspector Rutledge novel bt this author are there but, otherwise it’s simply a weak, inconsistent story. It reads like a 19th century women’s book … people pass out, women sacrifice themselves, relationships are based on dishonesty, men do their duty, suicide is brave (& condemned), etc. Very disappointing.

Revisado: 03-11-24
I was intrigued by the book descriptoons & curious as to how the author would play w the Poe, Markle, Holmes notion. Terrible book. It reads like a first draft before sn editor csn begin helping the author to shape, cut, connect, & develop. I finally gave up on it w 2 hours left. Don’t waste your time.

wonderful story; well written

The book is full of heartwarming stories about animals & animal rescue; the human story, more gritty, certainly parallels the resilience theme. Clean writing, no preaching. Excellent narration.
