Too much yapping. Not enough action.
Revisado: 01-16-25
Too much psychological analysis. If it’s a whodunit. Let it be a real mystery. Leave out the electricity btwn the characters. It’s juvenile.

The unfair depiction of priests
Revisado: 08-27-24
There didn’t seem to be a single character without a self-serving agenda. Maggie was especially unprincipled in her selfish pursuit of a priest, casting aside any concern for his vows. She was a spoiled brat.

Kevin O’Brien gives the reader so many characters, all with their own particular axes to grind. It’s hard to know whom to trust! Great fun! Many surprises!!

Historia
Winter is starting to loosen its grip on Cedar County along the shores of northern Lake Michigan. The first hints of green are becoming visible on the edges of the receding snowpack. On the inland lakes, the layers of ice that started forming in late November and December are slowly subsiding. The search for morel mushrooms is still three or four weeks off. But this year there is other treasure to hunt. Vincent Fox, an octogenarian, has self-published a book, Al Capone’s Michigan: The Secret Lost Treasure. Following the descriptions in the book, some of the locals are beginning to scour ...

Horrible AI reading.
Revisado: 05-03-24
The story was decent. AI reading is noticeably off kilter. Read PROduce as proDUCE; SUSpects as susPECTS; 911 call was read: ‘nine hundred eleven’; ‘SOB’ was read sob (as in cry). And there were no chapters, which are useful when turning back to hear a section again. That’s REALLY annoying! I am not liking AI AT ALL!!

Historia
When 14-year-old Zoe Johnson doesn't come home on a Monday night in early December, the alarm bells in Kings Lake Central police station do not ring straight away - after all, she's from the Dockmills, one of the toughest estates in the town. But for Detective Sergeant DC Smith, due to retire in just three weeks' time, there are some strange echoes of the case that has haunted him for the past 13 years. Maybe it's simply his over-developed sense of irony, or maybe, in his final days as a police officer, Smith must look once more into the eyes of a serial killer.

I love Smith bcz he’s such a decent, principled person and incredibly intelligent. I share his love of the English language even though I speak American English, of which Smith would likely disapprove. 😊

Historia
One sunny August afternoon, the residents of Cedar Close throw their annual summer barbecue. Children play in the cherry-tree lined street, tables are laden with food, and the wine is flowing. For Laurie Mills, it’s her first time meeting the neighbours. And it’s the first time she discovers her husband, Robert, is having an affair. Cedar Close has always been a nice place to live - a quiet suburban street where everyone looks out for one another and bad things don’t happen. Until late one evening, when Robert Mills is found dead in his bedroom.

I understand why the author never stopped reminding us of Riley’s losses of wife & baby. It all makes sense now. This book overflows with FABULOUS characters. I wish it had continued for another 40 chapters. Thank you, Anna-Lou Weatherly! PS: The narration was also excellent! I love learning new British colloquialisms.
