Historia
From the author of Lovejoy and Blessed comes a series about church ladies of the South. After reading this first novel in the series, fans of Southern fiction write, "I want to live next door to Mildred Budge." A retired school teacher, Mildred Budge just wants to live a quiet life in her hometown of Cloverdale. But retirement does not mean she can say no to a friend--not a friend in trouble. Mildred Budge knows how. A disciplined woman, Mildred can breathe the word "no" to a second cup of ice cream. Can resist drinking too much champagne. But when it comes right down to a friend needing a ...

Unfortunate horrible, robotic, virtual voice.
Revisado: 01-21-25
The virtual voice ruined the listening experience. It was horrible! And because of that, I won’t be continuing the series. It is such a shame because the storyline and characters were good.

Disappointing
Revisado: 01-31-21
Very disappointing. It was difficult, if not impossible to follow. The repetitive, verbatim conversations were annoying and made the time frame confusing. The narrator made Summer sound like a male. I’ve enjoyed this series, but could not finish this book.

Nameless, Kentucky, in 1969 is a hardscrabble community where jobs are few and poverty is a simple fact - just like the hot Appalachian breeze or the pests that can wipe out a tobacco field in days. RubyLyn Bishop is luckier than some. Her God-fearing uncle, Gunnar, has a short fuse and high expectations, but he's given her a good home ever since she was orphaned at the age of five. Yet now, a month shy of her 16th birthday, RubyLyn itches for more.

Good story. Poor production.
Revisado: 09-15-20
The story was fabulous. The production needs improvement. Every time I paused it went back to the beginning. It was very annoying to have to figure out where I was in the book. There are numerous places where it is painfully obvious it was edited and a new voice speaks at a different volume. It made it difficult to follow the story. It made me wonder who was supposed to be speaking. If the audio version was better, it would have been a very enjoyable book.

Historia
When sixteen-year-old Sally is evacuated to the English south coast, she is terrified by what lies ahead of her. All she knows are the sights and sounds of London's East End – but Sally swallows her tears as they leave the familiar landmarks behind, knowing that she has to be a Grown-Up Girl and play mother to her six-year-old brother Ernie. Playing mother is nothing new for Sally – their real mother Florrie, a good-time girl, hasn't even come to the station to wave them off and Ernie, crippled at an early age by polio, is used to depending on his older sister.

The audible reading was poor
Revisado: 03-02-19
The book was very good. But the person reading seemed to be making a smacking sound frequently which was very distracting. I almost stopped listening because of it.
