The Portuguese, when passing by the island in the mid-1540s, called the island “Ilha Formosa,” which means “Beautiful Island”. Then the Dutch came in the 1620s, searching for a base of operations for the Dutch East India Company. Then the Han Chinese came in the 17th century. Many of these Han Chinese were refugees from the wars in China. This influx caused an explosive reaction.

Many birds are not pronounced correctly and it is a little bit boring but it does give the key details of Taiwan history, which allows a person to see where Taiwan, China and the US and Europe are in the current situation. If you want to get a basic idea of Taiwan history, this is one that worthwhile to listen to, but you may be thrown off by the not good pronunciations of the Chinese words, including the key people that were historically involved or are involved today.

Delivered in a halting way, which is very bothersome and makes the listener wonder if the lecturer really doesn't know his stuff, is unorganized and unprepared or is just not good at lecturing! Additionally, he gets Luther's theology glaringly wrong in some key places.
Compare this The Modern Scholar lecture with Brad Gregory's The Great Courses lectures on the Reformation to see a well delivered flowing (non-halting) lecture with live audience, and a content that tries to be sympathetic to all sides and portray each one's theology faithfully.
