While many abandon their faith or embrace hopelessness, it is possible to discover the God who heals your heart in the midst of the pain. Matt Bays has been where you are. Heartfelt and beautiful
Revisado: 02-25-25
This is a wonderful, vulnerable, exquisitely written book. Matt Bays lays it all out there and walks us through the indescribable pain he's been through in his life. The most powerful part for me was when his wife asked him if he'd change anything about the trauma and abuse he endured as a child, and he honestly concluded no because his pain is what made him who he is. In my own life, God has always shown up when I've been hurting the most. I didn't want to hurt but I loved having God meet me there. Just like Matt, I have always loved the raw emotion of David's psalms and the book of Job. Those passages gave me permission to shake my puny little fist at the very Being who gave me that fist to shake, and scream it out. I love that Matt feels the same way. The truth is that life is ugly, unfair, and full of senseless suffering, and it is entirely fair to ask God why. And God won't answer. Instead, he does something better than explain himself. He suffers right there with me, just the way Matt Bays describes it. Jesus was right there with the girls in India being violated, or the Jews being murdered in the Holocaust. So powerful! Not every Christian will agree with his perspective, but this book resonated deeply with my spirit.

Great book!
Revisado: 02-21-25
Wonderful book that offers the author's own deep examination of the beliefs he inherited from his Evangelical upbringing. This is a humorous, entertaining, and engaging look at all of the ways Christians can "suck" and how we can do things better. Steele describes himself as a "skeptic pastor" but I found him to be very thoughtful and reverent and sincerely trying to follow the way of Jesus. Check out his UnBelief podcast too.

Historia
Traditional interpretations of the creatures of the Bible have sanded down their sharp, unsavory edges, transforming them into celestial beings of glory and light—or chubby, happy cherubs. Those cherubs? They're actually hybrid guardian monsters, more closely associated with the Egyptian sphinx than with flying babies. And the seraphim? Winged serpents sent to mete out God's vengeance. Demons aren't at war with angels; they're a distinct supernatural species used by Satan and by God. The pattern is chilling. Most of these monsters aren't God's opponents—they're God's entourage.

Honest look at the hard parts of the Bible
Revisado: 12-21-24
The author took a hard hitting look at the spooky, weird, and downright terrifying tales of the Bible, ultimately revealing how God himself is not above the fray. This forces readers to make an intellectually honest assessment about who exactly this God is, and why does he do or allow these things. I’ve always enjoyed great Biblical analysis and scholarship, and this did not disappoint. Be warned though, this will challenge our conception of the feel-good, all-loving Heavenly Father we hear about in Sunday School as kids!
As a Gen X reader, I caught just about all of the 80s/90s pop culture references. The author is rhetorically gifted and has a great sense of humor. I would enjoy her class if I were a Union Seminary student. Great book and highly recommended.

Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television "family."

In Hell? No! Rick Lannoye masterfully unravels all the ploys used to perpetuate the fear of Hell, beginning with the history of its pagan origins, the process by which Christianity adopted Hades' Realm from Greek mythology and how the original gospels have been manipulated to keep the unfounded fear of Hell alive today. Most importantly, Lannoye provides practical advice to anyone--no matter how emotionally and spiritually abused--about how they can be set free and become absolutely certain there is no such place as Hell.

Great Use of Scripture, Logic and History
Revisado: 09-08-24
I found the author's arguments against the modern conception of hell to be sound, well-researched, and solidly grounded in history, logic, and scripture. I particularly enjoyed his discussion of the Old Testament view of the afterlife and Sheol, as held by the ancient Israelites and informed by their Mesopotamian neighbors of the time, and he also examined the Persian and Greek views that were prevalent among the Jews' of Jesus' day. He also examined the NT passages that are often cited in support of hell as a place of eternal conscious torment (ECT) for non-believers, like the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, the lake of fire in Revelation, the parable of the sheep and the goats, and other passages. I found his arguments quite compelling and well worth a listen. His logic reminds me of David Bentley Hart (and communicated in language I can understand without needing a dictionary!)
The narrator had a pleasant voice and good inflection, though he misread and/or mispronounced several words, which was a bit distracting at times. For example, he referred to First and Second Maccabees, which are in the Protestant canon, as "non-conical." (Not shaped like a cone?). I did get a chuckle at his description of Pontius Pilate as the Roman "Perfect." But I enjoyed the narration.
Overall, I very much enjoyed the book. The author clearly loves God, he takes his faith and modern scholarship seriously, and he strives to honestly, fairly, and reverently engage with scripture. Many conservative evangelicals will disagree with his positions, but that's OK. Competing views of eschatology and heaven/hell have been debated since Christianity's inception. This book makes a great contribution to the modern ECT/universal reconciliation debate and it deserves a wide reading. Whether you agree or disagree, give it a try and see what you think!

Many believers feel stunted in their Christian growth. We beat ourselves up over our failures and, in the process, pull away from God because we subconsciously believe He tallies our defects and hangs His head in disappointment. In this new edition - now with a foreword by Michael W. Smith, testimony by Rich Mullins and the author's own epilogue, "Ragamuffin Ten Years Later," Brennan Manning reminds us that nothing could be further from the truth.

Revisado: 08-09-24
Stump does a great job harmonizing Christian theology and the Bible with the latest scientific discoveries. He writes and self-narrates with a humble demeanor, a great sense of humor, and a wide-eyed curiosity and sense of wonder and awe at the world God created for us to explore. I hope this book encourages believers to embrace evolutionary science unflinchingly and not fear it. I admire the work BioLogos does and I was excited to read this book after hearing a podcast interview with Stump. A wonderful read!

Allison returns to the ancient sources and earliest traditions, charting them alongside the development of faith in the resurrection in the early church and throughout Christian history.

Very thorough and intellectually honest
Revisado: 07-21-24
The author does a great deep dive into ghosts, near death experiences, apparitions of the Virgin Mary and other saints, religious relics, and other supernatural phenomena to carefully examine the evidence of the resurrection of Jesus from many different angles. Allison is himself a believer and offers his own personal experiences with the supernatural, which is remarkable given that he is a professor and an accomplished scholar. It’s a bit lengthy, but worth the listen. Highly recommended.

Many Christians mistakenly believe that their only choice is either to reconcile themselves to a fundamentalist reading of scripture (a "literal-factual" approach) or to simply reject the Bible as something that could bring meaning and value into their lives. In Reading the Bible Again for the First Time, Marcus Borg shows how instead we can freshly appreciate all the essential elements of the Old and New Testaments - from Genesis to Revelation - in a way that can open up a new world of intelligent faith.
