Historia
Fanny Gardiner Bennet is the third person in a family that fell victim to a terrible Generational Curse. She followed the advice of her mother, a woman who treated all of her children save Fanny, as if they were strangers come to ask for money. Lydia Gardiner, Fanny’s mother told her that she would know from birth, the child who would elevate her to the highest echelon of society. From the moment of Lydia’s birth, her other four daughters, Jane, Elizabeth, Mary and Katherine became, ‘those girls’ to Fanny. She wanted nothing to do with any of them, save use and abuse them as much as...

this is an excellent light reading series. Garrou is quickly becoming a new favorite author. she tends to overuse period words like "mayhap" (literally several times in the same speech), but overall it's a great guilty pleasure that has no smut. can't wait for the next one but can't find any info on it's release!

Pride, Prejudice & Punching
Revisado: 02-02-24
I'm an MST3K fan, and this is like a mash up between P&P and Shanghai Noon. characters are generally faithful, but there's a lot of eye rolling, "falling into their arms", swooning, and far more sarcasm than any one should expect. but it's a pretty good soap opera. One cannot listen to it at less than 1.2x, there were some mispronunciations (🎀 and bow, as in the action, were regularly mixed up) but less than I've found in many other readings. I cannot tell if this was written to be utterly hilarious or utterly serious, but I found myself laughing at most of it (ie, Darcy realized he loved Elizabeth immediately after Jane traumatized his solar plexus). I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be listening to it on a long road trip I have upcoming. It's fun, funny, light hearted, and there are some new characters with lots of twists and turns to keep it interesting.

a nice short version
Revisado: 01-11-24
this AI also struggles with the word "agape", pronouncing it "ah-gah-pee", but this only occurs 2x. the only major plot hole is that Wickham's plot is never resolved, but it's not the worst cliff hanger. the only deviation from the original characters seems to be Darcy's more emotional disposition at the very end. but it's a perfectly fine, PG rated listen.

meh, lots of literary errors
Revisado: 01-09-24
there are several times where whole paragraphs or conversations we simply repeated (probably and error in the PDF). The worst was in chapter 18 where there was a full 4minute repeat. it was an okay retelling, all characters were in their vein, there was no smut, but there was also very little of villainy that makes most of the love stories compelling. it was light hearted listening, but I won't be revisiting it.

what a great RomCom take
Revisado: 01-08-24
thTis is an excellent short read of our favorite characters from P&P (sans Mr. Collins and Charlotte). All of the canonical characters also stay within their tropes as laid down by JA, there is no smut, it is well pacrd, and I can't even fault the AI reading. JA's works are predisposed to a very even keiled reader, rather than one with a lot of emotional range. There were no noticeable mispronunciations. It is a great pleasure listen.

Fitzwilliam Darcy and his sister, Georgiana, journey to Bruges, Belgium for Georgiana to study with some of the finest art masters. They meet Mr Thomas Bennet, an art history professor at one of the universities there, and his two daughters, Jane and Elizabeth. The Bennets are part of a group trying to restore the stolen works of art taken by Napoleon's army when they plundered Belgium. Along with Colonel Fitzwilliam, the Bingleys, Lord and Lady Matlock, the search for the missing art leads through Belgium ...

meh, enjoyable but shallow
Revisado: 01-08-24
there were some lines of plot that were laid down early and never picked up again, like Elizabeth being a talented sculptor. It's not smutty and everyone is generally in character as laid down by JA, save one weird bout of Jane's which was oddly satisfying and humanizing. it's nothing compelling, nice to change the scenery a bit and drag in some historic drama from post war Belgium. Not an unpleasant waste of time, overall.

good easy listening. P&P + murder she wrote
Revisado: 01-07-24
This picks up right where the original left off, the only change was, in this timeline, Elizabeth was poisoned by Lady Catherine during the canonical P&P. There was no smut, no one was particularly out of character, My only complaint with the AI reader is that sometimes it will mispronounce things, one example being the DeBerg name, I believe the PDF it was reading from was misspelled, and it did not have the intelligence to pronounce it correctly. There were a couple other weird pronunciations, as with all of these AI readers there seems to be, but a close listener will not have a problem figuring out what they said. the genre seems to work well for the AI readers, because regency is generally not filled with a ton of passionate areas. AI does not do well with excessive emotion.

Definitely not the worst.
Revisado: 12-23-23
So this AI reading is better than expected, but it consistently stumbles of the word "agape", pronouncing it "ah-gah-pee", which becomes quite funny by the 3rd time. The story bends some characteristics of established characters, such as making Charlotte callous towards the Bennett's plight, Elizabeth is less than prudent in several major decisions, and Darcy is more amorous than is totally practical. It's not filthy, but quite suggestive to the halfway point.

factually true...too much gloss
Revisado: 10-14-22
do you love gruesome stories about devastating times in the past that are rewritten to suit a current political narrative? then this is for you. especially towards the end, there's a lot of focus on race and equity, not my cup of tea, as a microbiologist, and Fauci was painted in an excessively forgiving light. There was also a lot less emphasis placed on how policymaking was hindered by activism than is honest (it was briefly glossed over in the end). Numbers are correct, statistics are correct but clearly they are wearing foggy glasses in relaying the story.

good and eh
Revisado: 10-06-22
it is a good story, it echoes a lot of the first book. But for whatever reason it just didn't capture my interest or imagination as the first book. this might be me being a little bit bored with the plot, it's also kind of anticlimactic the way the lead protagonist actually conquers in the end. Still a good listen, but definitely not my favorite. not as memorable, and definitely not as intriguing.
