Historia
When Pamela Druckerman turns 40, waiters start calling her "Madame", and she detects a disturbing new message in mens' gazes: I would sleep with her, but only if doing so required no effort whatsoever. Yet 40 isn't even technically middle-aged anymore. And after a lifetime of being clueless, Druckerman can finally grasp the subtext of conversations, maintain (somewhat) healthy relationships and spot narcissists before they ruin her life. What are the modern 40s, and what do we know once we reach them? What makes someone a "grown-up" anyway?

Boring

I really wanted to like this as I liked Drukerman’s previous book. But overall, this book was just boring. Not much else to say.

Against the background of an age that saw the rebirth of ancient and classical learning, Paul Strathern explores the intensely dramatic rise and fall of the Medici family in Florence as well as the Italian Renaissance, which they did so much to sponsor and encourage. Interwoven into the narrative are the lives of many of the great Renaissance artists with whom the Medici had dealings, including Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Donatello as well as scientists like Galileo and Pico della Mirandola.

Incredible detail and story but also shockingly homophonic. I mean, why????
Revisado: 07-31-24
I want to love this book - truly. The history of the Medici so deeply connects to the ongoings of the rest of the world at that time that it’s difficult to imagine our own world today without them. The author does a marvelous job at telling this story in a way that feels far less lecture and instead with the same sense of intrigue that must have reflected the family’s real life! **HOWEVER, for the life of me I can’t comprehend his obvious abhorrence for homosexuality. He repeatedly links being gay or bisexual to the lowest of qualities, In one notable sentence comparing a great but bisexual artists to murderers. It’s the type of thing you can’t “unhear”. You don’t have to be gay to be offended by this. What’s more, none of the reviews I scanned before listening referenced this small but significant detail,

I was delighted with many of the observations in the book, particularly in the beginning. But then midway through, the book became angry, and the more I listened, the more I felt like I was listening to some Le Pen speech. No thanks.

I want to listed to this book a second time because there is no way I got it all with the first pass. By far the very best academic narration I’ve heard and filled with such interesting anecdotes and facts. Extremely grateful it was recommended.

It’s nice to have Thrawn’s story line but a slow book
Revisado: 10-24-21
Have listened to a number of other Thrawn-centered books. This was not my favorite. Too much dialogue that felt like filling up space. Some editing would have made it a far better book. Was hoping to see more dimension but that didn’t really happen. Not the worst but but I look forward to a stronger Book II.
