How do you feel about setting goals? I’ve heard people say they feel energized, depressed, confused, terrified, pumped, ambivalent, lost...or all of the above. Here’s what I’ve realized: Our relationship to success is inside-out. When we make our New Year’s resolutions, bucket lists, big plans, or weekly to-dos, we’re hoping that when we "arrive" we’ll be fulfilled. Our hearts will swell as we cross the finish line, and then we can finally relax and savor our happiness. Except more often than not, that doesn’t happen....

Redundant
Revisado: 02-12-25
One can say "Let them" repeatedly. The idea does not require an entire book. Mel's stories circle back repeatedly to the main idea...ad infinitum. Perhaps hearing similar stories echoing the exact response will help others. I find them boring and repetitious

Twenty years ago, Melanie Stokes was abandoned in a Boston hospital, then adopted by a wealthy young couple. Gifted with loving parents, a doting brother, and an indulgent uncle, Melanie has always considered herself lucky. Until the first cryptic, threatening note arrives: “You Get What You Deserve.” Melanie has no memory of her life before the adoption. Now someone wants her to remember it all - even the darkest nightmare the Stokes family ever faced: the murder of their first daughter.

Disappointed
Revisado: 07-22-24
This felt like a novel insisted upon by a publisher, and written by a writer who was not ready, but gave a "what the Hell" effort. Not Ms. Gardner's finest effort. I figured out very early on that O'Brian was Melanie's/Megan's father, which surprised me. Gardner is rarely so transparent. The rest of the novel was formulaic rather than talent -- thus the disappointment. I've been an avid fan for 16 years and this was the first time I struggled through to the end. Could not ascertain the correct decade in which this was set. PLEASE drop the "2.2 kids." It's really no longer cute, clever, or entertaining.

Sandy Pressman is a nice suburban wife whose boredom is getting the best of her. She could be making friends at the club, like her husband keeps encouraging her to do. Or working on her golf game. Or getting her hair done. But for some reason, these things don't interest her as much as the naked man on the motorcycle.

hated that Era of selfish stupid dominating men & women so overwhelmingly dominated, too stunted, too accepting of a status quo society imposed upon them. WHY did Wifey settle a second time? She did not know what she did not know. WORSE, she did not know THAT she did not know.

Historia
As a traditional psychotherapist, Dr. Brian Weiss was astonished and skeptical when one of his patients began recalling past-life traumas that seemed to hold the key to her recurring nightmares and anxiety attacks. His skepticism was eroded, however, when she began to channel messages from the “space between lives”, which contained remarkable revelations about Dr. Weiss’ family and his dead son. Using past-life therapy, he was able to cure the patient and embark on a new, more meaningful phase of his own career.

Welcome to Derry, Maine. It’s a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real. They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made 28 years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children.

One more Stephen King novel I hated to see end!
Revisado: 09-20-21
Enjoyed the many ways King wove skills about writing, and the genuine angst of two new, timid writers (Billy, then Alice), into the web of this story. I could smell the fears of his characters, and felt involved -- though safe and separate -- throughout the book.
