Historia
Over seven decades, from 1940 to 2010, the pieds-noirs Cassars live in an itinerant state—separated in the chaos of World War II, running from a complicated colonial homeland, and, after Algerian independence, without a homeland at all. This Strange Eventful History, told with historical sweep, is above all a family story: of patriarch Gaston and his wife Lucienne, whose myth of perfect love sustains them and stifles their children; of François and Denise, devoted siblings connected by their family's strangeness; of François's union with Barbara; of Chloe, the result of that union.

Naive and insipid narration
Revisado: 07-20-24
Breathy sophomoric reading
Probably best to read and not listen to this pitiable excuse for theater.

Most abrasive narration
Revisado: 06-29-24
Narrator has a particularly grating, strident voice: difficult to listen through book’s end.
Her portrayal of the middle-thirties woman was sophomoric at best.
Plot had twists and turns, but, as literature, it doesn’t register on any scale of decent writing in my opinion.

The Pale Cold Light is a standalone psychological thriller. WHAT READERS ARE SAYING: ★★★★★ “This book is beautifully written ...

Good enough story and writing. Dreadful narration. Really dreadful lack of finding the story and characters in the vocalizing.

Historia
Elisabeth Elliot was a young missionary in Ecuador when members of a violent Amazonian tribe savagely speared her husband, Jim, and his four colleagues. Incredibly, prayerfully, Elisabeth took her toddler daughter, snakebite kit, Bible, and journal...and lived in the jungle with the stone-age people who killed her husband. In this authorized biography, Ellen Vaughn uses Elisabeth’s private, unpublished journals, and candid interviews with her family and friends, to paint the adventures and misadventures God used to shape one of the most influential women in modern church history.

READ the book (don’t listen)
Revisado: 12-01-23
Fascinating glimpses into inner life and thoughts of a great woman.
The audible version, however, distracted often with mispronounced words and names. (Wide traces of upper midwest cadences and, dare I say, evangelical naïveté did not help in this instance.) The proverbial last straw for me was hearing the name of the classic and extremely well known French writer, Camus, loudly pronounced Cammuss.
Did no one listen to this recording before putting it on Audible???
Should readers not at the very least educate themselves about any word that is unfamiliar?

Excellent! Surprisingly so!
Carefully crafted. Seems in character with historical accounts of the time. Three more words required for a review: oh, well….
