I only put a review here because Amazon makes me do it. I used to stars for my own internal use.

I'm sorry. I use the stars to let me know if I want to keep on listening to a series. Now Audible seems to make me write something too. Good ole Audible.

I've pretty much stopped writing reviews. It seems if you participate in the social cloud you get eaten up by the sharks. But, I can't help it in this case. I love Jim Butcher's Dresden Files and James Marsters' reading. This has to be my favorite one so far. Plenty drama and (give me a synonym for heart wrenching, I'm too old and curmudgeonly to have a wrenched heart) moments throughout the main story and then, the cup of coffee. I was just floored.

Thank you Jim and James.

Maybe I need a change. It seems the last few books I've listed to are - poor. Few redeeming qualities. In the case of Trojan Colony, even the ending was agonizing.

I won't give a long, drawn out explanation of why this didn't work for me. The only thing I could think of throughout the whole book was that the max age of the most senior character (some General or another) is 17 years old and all other characters are younger. The LT and the Professor would be about 13 years old I'd guess.

My biggest complaint is that this character maturity shift seems to have become the norm. And that's probably an admission that I've become jaded.

I hate writing negative reviews. I have much respect for the authors and the narrators that put together all these hours of entertainment. But, when you read this book, did you find that the conversations, internal thinking, situations, or responses were that of adults or kids?

And it ends with the typical ignorant threat of extortion and new mission. Not a single meaningful conversation.

Let me take this opportunity to say I really enjoy SciFi. I also enjoy books and written and audible form. This was a fun book to listen to. What has me concerned is the preview at the end. A preview of another "drama". A play. A group of people talking to each other and no meat to the story. All dialog. No clue what someone's thinking, what the surroundings are like, what the real personalities are. It's a disturbing trend in my opinion. Writers, authors. Don't hand your creativity off to interpreters. Narrators do a wonderful job today because the are given insight by the book. Actors pretend, interpret and as often as not, miss. Some might say the times they are a changing. I say, it's good to be old. Kev

This wasn't a book. It was a play without the benefits and cues of seeing people, scenes. Because it is not written as a book you lose the benefit of the author's descriptions.

What you end up with is a confusing mass of dialog like listening to strangers in a phone conversation. Most unsatisfying.

To bad. I really enjoy the series.

How do you get through what appears to be a good story read poorly? I'm struggling here. I want to listen to the series but it isn't starting out well. People are getting blown up, giving their lives for their fellow marines, bargained away by corrupt leaders and all I could do was to keep slapping my cheeks to keep me awake. I know it's a good story because I'm mad as hell at the publisher for not casting it properly and ruining the experience.

Sorry. I know this is cold. It just seems the publisher/producer/editor didn't give a damn about their reputation or the author's. I hope Mr. Allan can take more control of the presentation of his works.

Who the heck edited this? The Narrator did an OK job. Maybe he was a little lackluster in expression. But the bad part was that retakes were not cut out. Liam would repeat a line or two a few times as obvious attempts to get it right and whomever edited the audio left these retakes in. Very distracting.

Then in a few cases, when announcing the next chapter's title it just sounds like the previous conversation continued. It's not until a few seconds later that I realize they moved on. Ugh. Terrible editing. OK narration. Good story.

More Exciting than Fiction

This is an exciting story that rings true in its interpretation of history. The outcome is known but the story is not melodramatic. The realities faced by Japan's and America's navies both operational and political are well presented.

I got a real feeling I could grasp and understand why things happened as they did, what must have gone through pilot's minds as the reached beyond their fuel limits then missed with all bombs or torpedoes.

While Washington seemed to second guess some of Nimitz's decisions they seemed to smartly remain largely hands off. Actually, that part doesn't ring true but maybe it was a different time, different respect for chain of command.

Seems Japan had it much worse with the army throwing the country into war and mostly leaving the navy to fight it themselves. I almost get the feeling that to Japan's army, the sea war in the Pacific was a distraction that kept Japan's navy out of their way.

Based on previous stories (including the movie) I had a little more respect for Yamamoto and some of his officers. This book took some of that away. In fact, I'd say this book made most of the key players leading to the battle of Midway a lot more human in my mind. Less the glorious hero and more the flawed, brave, arrogant, and patriotic real hero.

I really enjoyed this one.
