Forced myself to finish it
Revisado: 09-09-24
Honestly wanted to enjoy it. The premise was good and I can suspend my disbelief pretty far for good sapphic romance but this was too much even for me. The main character is very hard to root for and genuinely unlikable . The “plot twists”(playing very fast and loose with this term) were obvious HOURS before they happened. All of them. The last 3-4 hours of the book you’ll just be waiting for the story to catch up to all the things you already know. I also hate when authors steer hard into the “we fell in love so fast” and then explain it away with a lesbian u-haul joke. I have no issue after months or even weeks, but this entire book was roughly a 2-3 week period, and the protagonists fell in love in one night. Just makes a lot of the dialogue unbelievable. The best word i can use to describe the story is forced. They love each other because the book says so, the problems are problems because the book says so, and the “plot twists” are there because the book says so.
All that being said, the author has promise. The writing was good and the supporting cast was likable. If the main character had been tweaked and the plot didnt feel forced this could have been a good book.

Historia
Riley Beckett met Gianna Mäkinen-drop-dead gorgeous influencer, trilingual, daughter of world-famous models, yes, that Gianna Mäkinen-their first year at Boston University, and it changed everything for the both of them. After all, when you find the person who just gets you, nothing feels quite "the same" right?

Great story, excellent narrator
Revisado: 08-21-24
Not the first book I’ve enjoyed by Haley Cass, but this one felt special. I chose my daily activities for the last few days based around whether or not I could listen to this book while doing them. I was hooked very early on and the story delivered.
Also Lori Prince has become my favorite female narrator on Audible. Not only is her voice pleasant to listen to but she delivers with genuine emotion and genuinely made some of the emotional scenes in this book feel real.
Give it a try, it will hoom you like it hooked me.

Historia
After a disastrous blind date, Darcy Lowell is desperate to stop her well-meaning brother from playing matchmaker ever again. Love—and the inevitable heartbreak—is the last thing she wants. So she fibs and says her latest setup was a success. Darcy doesn't expect her lie to bite her in the ass. Elle Jones, one of the astrologers behind the popular Twitter account, Oh My Stars, dreams of finding her soul mate. But she knows it is most assuredly not Darcy... a no-nonsense stick-in-the-mud, who is way too analytical, punctual, and skeptical for someone as free-spirited as Elle.

Good book, abrupt ending
Revisado: 03-27-23
I really enjoyed this book until it ended. I felt robbed of a true ending, and it feels like it was an intentional decision to string along readers for the second and third books in the series. Which would be more forgiveable if the protagonists were the same as this book instead of secondary and teritary characters. Feels like a cash grab, wont be finishing the series. Which is unfortunate, because most of the story was really enjoyable.

Listened to it twice so far
Revisado: 08-15-22
I very much enjoyed this book, so much it inspired me to try another book by Lola Keeley and I loved it as well. The character decelopment is rich and interesting and the plot moves at a soeed that feels neither slow nor rushed. I’ve listened to this one twice so far and expect to listen to it again in the future. Both titles I’ve purchased by Keeley have left me wanting more story from the characters after the book is finished. If you’re on the fence then defeinutely spend the credit.

Lola Keeley is quickly becoming one of my favorites
Revisado: 08-09-22
I got this title after listening to “Her Royal Happiness” and thoroughly enjoying it. Slammed delivers in every way, and Lola Keeley is quickly becoming one of my favorite lgbt romance authors. Slammed has characters that have depth and actual motivations, well written dialouge, and a plot thats less cookie cutter than your average romance novel. Both titles I’ve listened to by Keeley have left me wanting more story about the characters because of how well they are developed. If you’re on the fence about this one just spend the credit, you won’t regret it.

Now he's been recruited into the top magical academy, beautiful women are breaking down his dorm-room door, and the headmaster has big, big plans for him. Just a fun story, don’t go in with high expectations
Revisado: 05-13-22
I picked this book up in a recent 2 for 1 sale and honestly I didn’t have high expectations going in. It’s a good thing I didn’t. This book isn’t bad, it’s a fun little listen about a summoner who everyone thinks is useless trying to prove them wrong. And that’s it. Theres very little subtext, and at no point does the listener really have to think. The main character is straight forward, and all of the conflict is handled with a basic “im better than they think I am, time to prove it.” There was no real growth in the main character in the first book, he basically goes through the whole story as an infallible bumpkin. All of this to say, this book isn’t very long or deep or thought provoking, but its fun story to zonk out to while doing some trivial tasks. Also the narrator needs to work on his inflection, some sentences were clearly misread and even repeated a couple of times, but his voices were good. Overall probably pick this one up on sale or maybe wait for a box set, I’m not sure how much the sequels are but I’d probably be willing to pick then up in a sale, but bot use a credit on them. Hope this review helps!

Listen actively
Revisado: 02-06-22
I want to start by addressing things I read from other reviews that almost stopped me from listening to this one. A few other reviews said the timing wasn’t clear in the book, this is just false. The book is split into parts and the beginning of each part tells you the exact time the following chapters cover, so as long as you actually pay attention its fairly clear. I also read from many reviews that this book is depressing, and I don’t think so. It is a lot more realistic than most lgbt romances. It’s not as simple as “the reluctant couple fell in love and overcame one big problem the end.” My only real complaint is the main character is from central Alabama, and I’m also from central Alabama, so I cringed pretty hard whenever the narrator would pronounce Calera as “kay leh ra.” Lived here my entire life and have never once heard it pronounced like that. Overall a great story and absolutely worth your time, especially while its included with audible plus

Revisado: 04-07-21
This is probably the best series i’ve picked up on audible, since it has new releases often and they’re all fantastic. Love the narration and the story, and the spongebob theme being chanted by a bunch of angry dwarves marching into battle. The bloopers at the end were a nice touch as well.

A spectacular sequel, and a promising prequel
Revisado: 01-21-19
Rowe is doing something that I feel many authors are incapable of. He’s being patient. He’s taking his time, developing his characters, and letting his plot evolve at a pace that makes the reader want so much more. This doesn’t mean the book lacks action, nor that it feels like a slow moving story. Many things are happening, and instead of rushing through the plot to get to the end, Rowe helps you enjoy the journey. Also, Podehl gives another phenomenal performance, further enhancing the the listening experience. Arcane Ascension has quickly become one of my all time favorites, and I eagerly await the next installment in the series.
