Excellent
Revisado: 01-27-25
I really enjoyed this audible. The story caught my attention with the restructuring of the business during a pandemic. I don’t think the author was in the US at that time. His description of other businesses and the attitude didn’t jibe with my reality of the time. But other than that I loved the story.

Much too long

I really disliked the computer narrative. Ai has no inflection and I can’t tell who is speaking at any given time. Also the story was too long. It could have been 2 books.

One warning, two cautions, and a note: WARNING: In deference to a truth universally acknowledged that men do not behave the same when no women are present as they do in mixed company, this vagary does have occasional uses of profanity. The men in my life would consider it amusing but naïve to afford the same semantics of conversation for wholly different circumstances such as these, or they would should one of them choose to read it. This vagary proposes an alternate telling of the original Pride and Prejudice and considers what may have happened should the characters have been afforded a ...

I absolutely dislike the virtual voice. It doesn’t have inflection and it’s hard to tell when it’s switching from one character to another. I wish you would go back to humans instead of computers.

Lady Myrtle McQuoid has always felt a little forgotten, and this season is no exception. When her boisterous family vacates their London townhouse for the country, Myrtle finds she’s been left behind. But she just needs to stay warm, keep her belly full, and distract herself until her relatives realize their mistake and turn back to collect her. Surely that won’t take long.

Vera Sorokina loves reading the penny dreadfuls and immersing herself in tales of adventure, mystery, and romance. Her own days are filled with the often mundane work of running the book and print shop she owns with her father. The shop offers her the freedom and income to employ and protect the poverty-stricken Londoners she’s come to care about, and it gives her father something to do other than long for their hometown of St. Petersburg. She is grateful for the stability in their lives, but she often feels lonely.

Well Done
Revisado: 09-01-21
I have to write a review because the story ended with me smiling. I expected a love story and I expected a mystery because of the Dread Penny Society, but add possible espionage and extortion, attempted murder and a little occult and this was a crime/mystery solvers dream. The three separate story lines in the Merchant and the Rogue (story and 2 books) kept me on my toes.
I like that Stone’s race is never made a big deal.
Justine Eyre was remarkable with all the voices she portrayed and she did an admirable job with the American southern accent. I found in listening to people I have known in my lifetime the southern accent was not very dissimilar from British accent but for a harsher sound and a little cockney thrown in. Because Stone has lived in London for 8 years and has observed the cultured accents of key members of the Society that would have become a part of his accent. Good job all around.

This Story Will Make You Smile
Revisado: 12-14-20
I was a little unsure of the direction the story was going after that spectacular dress George wore for her wedding with Everingham. There had to be a conflict so enter the ward, a look a like, a potential kidnapping, fear of a drowning in the lake...Now the real conflict when the duke plans to go back to London If only they would say how they feel.LOVE.

A Little Disappointing
Revisado: 06-15-19
The overall story is intriguing and the love interest developed slowly. There’s an interesting twist when we realized Elizabeth is pregnant by the father and the elaborate tale he created to keep the real birth date a secret. Don’t want to give too much away. My problem is the author doesn’t give you enough information about Elizabeth. You find out in the epilogue that she was left at boarding school, not knowing about her family thinking she is alone, then to find out her brother is a peer and currently prime minister. But wait, there’s more. Elizabeth is illegitimate and her mother is a washed up actress who is a drunk. Here’s another one, Elizabeth thinks she has murdered a man trying to assault her. Whew. Too many plots. You don’t introduce major characters without giving a logical way to exit. I understand there are a series of books and plots may be a next book but the ending of this book made me say “what?” Too many unanswered:(
