perseverance when natural forces were set againt these 'Okies'
Revisado: 04-01-25
This is a great slice of life, of those who survived what would become known as The Dustbowl. the focus family has always been poor. Their mother was gone, but they still had a dedicated father...and a step mother who blamed the younger child, Catherine, for every nastiness her years in Oklahoma mustered. It takes a special kind of person to hang on to hope when things really were hopeless. will Catherine, her sister Melissa, and their family find strength in each other, enough to stick it out?

Who says History cannot bond today's teens together?
Revisado: 03-08-25
As a historian, teacher and genealogist, I have a little envey about not just the compelling historical content, but also in the way it could speak to the often disinterested teens of today. Not every family history ends in "happily ever after", but each reveals a bit more of who the family was, and how it evolved until you...

Good book, just wish it weren't electronically read
Revisado: 02-13-25
Good mystery mixed with childhood trauma all adults have hanging around in the background. The only thing I didn't like about this book was the electronic reader. It never catches emotion, urgency, or 8ndividuality of the characters.

Hypnosis...fact or something that creates it's own 'life'?
Revisado: 01-21-25
The teen boy this story centers on has lost more than most. Once a child star, his loser mom had burned every penny he earned on drugs and parties, making terrible mistakes with friends and men in her life.
But not everyone in the world has forgotten about the cute kid actor who grew up to be a zero. But when a new friend tries to hypnotize him, what he says scares his friends. Trying a genuine hypnosis councilor seems to stir up more violence. His only escape is in solving a terrifying cold case that was hidden until the door to evil opens again...like it did 50 years ago...

Historia
Brilliantly executed and compulsively listenable, Unsheltered is the story of two families, in two centuries, who live at the corner of Sixth and Plum, as they navigate the challenges of surviving a world in the throes of major cultural shifts. In this mesmerizing story told in alternating chapters, Willa and Thatcher come to realize that though the future is uncertain, even unnerving, shelter can be found in the bonds of kindred - whether family or friends - and in the strength of the human spirit.

Life as a house...I think there was a Movie so named
Revisado: 01-10-25
I always have loved Kingsolver novels, and this one was written in a style I like, split time...past and present. the common link is a large house in a college town. The earlier split is from the time when Charles Darwin's works were demonized by many. the other time is modern day, with its aged home.
What i didn't care for: audio made it harder to keep people straight...were they 'now' or 'back then'
Maybe because I had read her other books, this one sink into heart as much

Revisado: 12-28-24
This is a tale about Oregon Trail immigrants. It is better than most in the genre because the characters range from stong a brave to violent alcoholics. Points along the trail are specific, and the writer paints those scenes in our minds

Appalachian life, amid disasters, tragedies, and unwavering will to persevere
Revisado: 11-28-24
This is a dual timeliness book, with timeliness that eventually merge.
Times were hard during the Great Depression, and Appalachian folks seemed to be hit harder than most.

Not only did she work alongside her sisters farming, she had a special calling for which she began training as a youngster. For people who could afford a doctor, she was a midwife. Alongside with hundreds of successful births, she helped the people with more than that. But her future is interrupted by a waif of a girl more dead than alive.
Timeliness 2; Famous country singers must have it all with devoted fans who loved them, and wealth to buy all the happiness money could buy. However, when a parents death reveals a deep secret, the music ends...at least until those secrets are tracker down. With a modern nurse midwife, the 2 search for answers in a rugged land that lacked roads, electricity, or phones. Will he be ready for answers to his burning questions?

The strength in persevering
Revisado: 11-28-24
There are so many books about the stereotypical 'poor little rich girl'. This one is head and shoulder above the rest.
Lilly was born just before the market crash of 1929. Hers was awealthy family at Blackwood Manor, and should have had whatever she wanted. Instead her mother, a pentecostal religious zealot, kept her locked away in a hidden room, never allowed to breath fresh air, or feel sunshine on her skin. Her father did not free her, but he did show he cared from time to time.
Proclaimed by her mother to be a profoundly ugly punishment from God, and if seen terrified people would kill the freak child.
Suddenly, while her dad is away, her mother unloked her prison and dug her away to face a life both more horrible and sweeter than anything she knew possible.
A second time line focuses on a more modern woman, Julia, who find herself smack in the middle of the dark mystery of Blackwood Manor.
